Chapter 2: The Truth Nobody Expected
The backyard went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence where everyone suddenly realizes something terrible has happened.
Lily was shaking in my arms, her small body wrapped in a blue towel.
I looked at her.
“Recorded?””
She nodded slowly.
“I used your old phone.””
My heart raced.
“What phone?””
“The one you gave me to play games with when we went to Grandma’s last month.””
I remembered.
My old phone had a cracked corner and no service anymore. Lily used it to take pictures of her toys and record silly songs.
I had never thought anything of it.
But now my daughter was telling me it had captured something.
Daniel stood frozen near the patio door.
His face was pale.
“Lily,” he said softly, “what did you record?””
She looked at him, then at Margaret.
“Grandma was saying mean things before Mommy came outside.””
Margaret immediately stepped forward.
“That is ridiculous.””
Her voice was sharp.
“She’s a child. She doesn’t understand what happened.””
I turned toward her.
“Don’t talk about my daughter like she’s lying.””
Margaret pointed at Lily.
“She has always been dramatic.””
That sentence made Daniel finally react.
“Mom.””
Everyone looked at him.
Margaret’s expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Did you pull her hair?””
For the first time, Margaret hesitated.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
She recovered quickly.
“She was disrespecting me.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Margaret looked offended.
“I was disciplining her.””
I stepped between them.
“You pushed a six-year-old into a swimming pool.””
Margaret raised her chin.
“She slipped.””
“No,” I said.
“She didn’t.””
My voice shook.
“I watched you.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then he looked at his mother.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Doubt.
For years, Daniel had defended Margaret.
Every argument.
Every uncomfortable family dinner.
Every time she made a cruel comment.
But now he had seen something he couldn’t explain away.
Rachel walked closer.
“Maybe we should listen to the recording.””
Margaret immediately snapped.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Her reaction was too fast.
Too desperate.
Rachel frowned.
“Why not?””
“Because this is absurd.””
But Lily tightened her grip around me.
“She said I was a mistake.””
The words came out quietly.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What did you say to her?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I never said that.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“You said Mommy trapped Daddy by having me.””
I felt like someone had punched me.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Mom?””
Margaret looked away.
“It was a private conversation.””
“With my daughter?””
She didn’t answer.
I felt anger rising through every part of me.
All those years.
All those moments when Margaret smiled at Lily while secretly making her feel unwanted.
I had missed it.
Or maybe I just refused to see it.
Daniel crouched down in front of Lily.
“Sweetheart, where is the phone?””
Lily pointed toward the garden chair near the pool.
“I dropped it when Grandma grabbed me.””
Rachel quickly found it.
The screen was cracked.
My stomach dropped.
Margaret saw the phone and laughed.
“You think that proves anything?””
Daniel picked it up.
“It might.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Daniel, don’t embarrass me in front of everyone.””
He looked at her.
“I’m trying to find out what happened to my daughter.””
That sentence changed everything.
Because Margaret realized something.
For the first time, Daniel wasn’t automatically on her side.
He pressed the power button.
The phone turned on.
Everyone gathered around.
My hands were trembling.
The last video file showed a timestamp from only minutes earlier.
Daniel pressed play.
At first, there was only wind.
Then Margaret’s voice.
Cold.
Clear.
“You need to stop acting like your mother is in charge.””
Lily’s small voice answered.
“I was just telling Grandma I wanted Mommy.””
Margaret replied,
“Your mother has spoiled you. She lets you think you can say anything.””
Then came a sound.
A child crying.
My breath caught.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
May you like
But the worst part was still coming.
Because the next thing we heard was Margaret saying something that made Daniel’s face completely change.
