Chapter 5: The Lie Margaret Built

I stared at the screenshot until my eyes burned.

It was a message from my sister Rachel.

Not Daniel’s sister.

My sister.

The person who had known me my entire life.

The message was from eight months earlier.

“Emma, I still can’t believe you haven’t told Daniel what his mother did.””

My fingers went cold.

I looked at the time.

2:14 a.m.

Daniel was downstairs.

Waiting.

I walked slowly out of the bedroom.

Every step felt heavier.

When I reached the living room, Daniel was sitting on the couch with the old backup files open on his laptop.

He looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Just broken.

“Tell me,” he said.

I sat across from him.

“Your mother threatened me.””

His face changed.

“When?””

“Last year.””

“About what?””

I took a breath.

“The custody argument.””

Daniel stared.

“What custody argument?””

I swallowed.

“The one Margaret started.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“She never told me there was a custody argument.””

“Exactly.””

The room felt smaller.

I remembered that day clearly.

Lily had been sick.

I was exhausted.

Daniel was traveling for work.

Margaret came over to “help.””

But help wasn’t what she offered.

She criticized everything.

The food I made.

The way I dressed Lily.

The way I handled bedtime.

Then she said something I never forgot.

“You’re lucky Daniel still chooses you.””

I had laughed because I thought she was joking.

She wasn’t.

“She told me Daniel deserved a better wife,” I whispered.

Daniel looked away.

“Emma…”

“She said if I ever left with Lily, she would make sure everyone believed I was unstable.””

His face changed.

“That’s insane.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Because I was afraid he wouldn’t believe me.

But I didn’t say that.

Instead, I said,

“Because she was your mother.””

Daniel looked down.

And that answer hurt him.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

For years, Margaret had been protected by his loyalty.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Rachel.

Daniel saw the name.

“Your sister.””

I nodded.

I opened it.

Rachel had sent another screenshot.

This one was from Margaret.

To Rachel.

The message said:

“Emma needs to learn her place. If she keeps turning Daniel against me, I’ll make sure she loses everything.””

Daniel read it.

His expression changed completely.

“She sent this to your sister?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Why didn’t Rachel tell me?””

I looked at him.

“Because she thought you wouldn’t believe her.””

That sentence hit harder than anything.

Daniel stood up.

“My whole family knew?””

“No.””

“Who knew?””

I hesitated.

“Your father.””

Daniel froze.

“My dad?””

I nodded.

“He knew Margaret was angry. He told me to ignore her.””

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“My entire family knew she was like this?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was worse.

They knew pieces.

But nobody wanted to confront her.

Nobody wanted to become her enemy.

And now Lily had paid the price.

The next morning, Daniel went back to his parents’ house.

I wanted to stop him.

But I didn’t.

Because some conversations needed to happen without me standing between them.

When he arrived, Margaret was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee like nothing had happened.

She looked up.

“You came alone.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why did you threaten my wife?””

Margaret didn’t even blink.

“I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From her.””

Daniel laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“My wife?””

“She changed you.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You hurt my daughter.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“I disciplined her.””

“You dragged her by her hair.””

“She disrespected me.””

Daniel looked at the woman who raised him.

And for the first time, he saw her clearly.

Not as his mother.

But as someone who had chosen cruelty.

“Mom,” he whispered.

“What?””

“Did you push Lily?””

Margaret looked away.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

And before he left, she said something that stopped him at the door.

“If you turn against me, Daniel, you’ll lose more than you think.””

He turned around.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret smiled.

“Ask your wife why she really married you.””

Daniel stood frozen.

Because suddenly, Margaret wasn’t defending herself anymore.

May you like

She was attacking the one thing she knew could destroy us.

Our marriage.
