Chapter 7: The Man Behind the $180,000 Loan
Robert closed the office door and placed Laura's photograph beside the loan application.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me since Eleanor arrived.
"How do we know Daniel intended to disappear with the money?""
Eleanor opened the blue folder again.
"Because Laura found evidence of his previous schemes.""
She removed three printed bank statements and placed them in front of Robert.
"Daniel borrowed money from several people over the years. He promised investments, business partnerships, and guaranteed returns. When those arrangements collapsed, he moved the money between accounts.""
Robert studied the statements.
"These are substantial transactions.""
"Some of them came from Laura," Eleanor replied.
"She helped him twice. The third time, she refused.""
I looked at the photograph.
"And Richard Coleman?""
"He's the man who arranged Daniel's earlier financing," Eleanor explained.
"Laura suspected they were working together to obtain property documents.""
Robert picked up the loan application.
"Then we need to establish whether this application has actually been submitted and whether any lender has approved it.""
He made another call.
Meanwhile, Ethan sat beside me, staring at his mother's letter.
"Grandma," he said quietly, "did Mom know Uncle Daniel was trying to take the house?""
Eleanor reached across the table.
"She suspected it. That's why she made sure you would be protected.""
"Why didn't Dad know?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Because your mother wanted to spare him another family conflict. She believed Daniel might eventually change.""
I lowered my head.
Laura had protected me even after she was gone.
And I'd spent years defending the very person she had feared.
Robert returned from the hallway.
"I've spoken with the lender's fraud department. The application was received, but the loan hasn't been funded.""
I exhaled.
"Can they stop it?""
"They've placed a temporary hold pending identity verification. We'll provide the evidence of suspected forgery and request that no further action be taken.""
"Good.""
"But there's something else.""
Robert turned his laptop toward us.
"Richard Coleman is listed as the loan broker.""
I looked at the photograph.
The same man.
Robert continued.
"I've also found a company associated with the application. It's registered to Madison.""
Eleanor frowned.
"What's the company called?""
"Bright Future Property Solutions LLC.""
I almost laughed.
"Madison has never owned a business.""
Robert clicked another page.
"According to these records, the company was established six months ago.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"That's when she stopped going to college.""
"Exactly," I said.
Robert opened the company's public filing.
There were three listed officers.
Madison.
Richard Coleman.
And Daniel.
Vanessa had been staring at the screen.
Finally, she spoke.
"Daniel told me the company was just a way to organize Madison's finances.""
I turned toward her.
"You believed that?""
"He said it would help her become independent.""
"By putting my house under her company?""
Vanessa started crying.
"I didn't understand the paperwork.""
Robert looked up.
"Mrs. Michael, did you sign anything related to this company?""
She nodded reluctantly.
"Some documents.""
"What documents?""
"I don't remember.""
"Did you receive money?""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, "Ten thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"You received ten thousand dollars?""
"Daniel said it was repayment for the money I'd spent helping Madison.""
"Helping her with what? My son's rent?""
She covered her face.
"I made a terrible mistake.""
I stood up.
"How many times did you lie to me?""
She couldn't answer.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared.
Brother, we need to talk. Vanessa tells me you've involved a lawyer. Don't make a family problem into a public disaster.
I showed Robert.
He read it and shook his head.
"Don't respond.""
Another message arrived.
You don't understand what you've done. There are people waiting for that money.
Then a third.
If the deal collapses, everyone loses.
I stared at those words.
Everyone loses.
That was what Daniel believed.
He thought he could threaten me with consequences and make me retreat.
But he had forgotten one thing.
I wasn't protecting a business deal.
I was protecting my son.
I typed a single response.
The deal is over. Do not contact Ethan again.
Daniel immediately called.
I declined.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, it was an unfamiliar number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke calmly.
"Mr. Bennett? This is Richard Coleman.""
Robert immediately gestured for me to put the call on speaker.
"How did you get my number?"" I asked.
"Your brother provided it. I understand there has been some confusion about the property transaction.""
"There's no confusion. I never authorized it.""
Richard chuckled softly.
"These things can be resolved privately.""
"Then explain why my signature is on a document I never signed.""
A pause.
"Mr. Bennett, you should be careful about making accusations.""
Robert leaned toward the phone.
"This is attorney Robert Hayes. All further communication should be directed through my office.""
Richard's tone changed.
"Of course. But perhaps you should speak to your brother before taking any drastic action.""
The call ended.
Robert immediately saved the number.
Then Eleanor noticed something on the laptop.
"Wait.""
She pointed to the company records.
"Scroll down.""
Robert did.
A registered business address appeared beneath Richard's name.
It was a commercial building in a neighboring county.
Eleanor leaned closer.
"I recognize that address.""
"From where?"" I asked.
"Daniel's previous business.""
She turned toward me.
"Michael, he didn't start this company six months ago. He restarted something Laura helped shut down.""
Robert looked at the screen.
And then he found the name of the original company.
*Coleman Financial Ventures.*
The same company that had been connected to Laura's old property dispute.
But the real shock came when Robert opened its archived records.
May you like
The company's former director wasn't Daniel.
It was Vanessa.
