Chapter 11: The Dead Man's Signature

Robert spent most of the morning verifying the document attributed to Thomas Reed.

By lunchtime, he had an answer.

"There's no legitimate authorization here," he said.

He placed the document beside the original trust agreement.

"The electronic certificate is inconsistent with the records we have. The signature may have been copied from an older filing.""

I stared at the page.

"Can someone actually use a dead man's identity like this?""

"Someone can attempt it. Whether it succeeds is another matter.""

Eleanor looked furious.

"Laura trusted Thomas completely.""

"Then we need to find out who submitted this.""

Robert turned to his computer.

He searched the document reference number and found the submission history.

The request had come through a private administrative service.

The contact email belonged to Coleman Financial Ventures.

I leaned back.

"Richard.""

"Possibly," Robert replied.

"But we shouldn't assume he personally submitted it.""

He made another call.

This time, he spoke to the trust's current record custodian.

After several minutes, he ended the call.

"They've agreed to preserve the submission records and flag the attempted amendment for review.""

"Can Daniel still challenge the trust?"" I asked.

"Anyone can raise a legal challenge. But that doesn't mean they'll succeed. The original signed documents are much stronger evidence than an unexplained electronic submission.""

Eleanor opened her handbag.

"There is something else I should give you.""

She removed a small brass key.

"Laura gave me this before she died.""

"What does it open?""

"A safe-deposit box.""

Robert looked up.

"Where?""

"At First National Bank. Laura told me the box contained the final copies of her estate instructions.""

I frowned.

"Why didn't you mention this yesterday?""

"Because I wanted to make sure we had the right documents first. I didn't want Daniel learning about it.""

Robert stood.

"Then we should arrange access as soon as possible.""

We went to the bank that afternoon.

After verifying Eleanor's identity and the necessary authorization, an employee escorted us to a private room.

The box was smaller than I expected.

Inside were several sealed envelopes, a USB drive, and a thick packet tied with a blue ribbon.

Eleanor touched the packet.

"Laura wrote this herself.""

I opened the first envelope.

It contained a letter addressed to me.

Michael, if you're reading this, something has happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.

I stopped.

My hands were shaking.

I continued.

I know you love Daniel. I know you believe that no matter what happens, family deserves another chance. I admire that about you.

But please understand something. Forgiveness does not mean giving someone permission to hurt our son.

I swallowed.

Ethan was sitting beside me.

He reached over and held my hand.

The next paragraph explained that Laura had discovered Daniel was using business opportunities to obtain personal loans.

She had found evidence that he intended to use the house as collateral.

She had refused.

But she hadn't trusted him to stop.

So she created the trust and arranged for Eleanor to hold the original beneficiary instructions.

Then I reached a sentence that made me stop breathing.

If Daniel ever tries to obtain this house again, do not assume he is acting alone.

I looked at Eleanor.

She nodded.

Laura explained that a second person had helped Daniel gather the original property records.

She hadn't identified that person in the main letter.

Instead, she had placed the name inside a sealed envelope.

I opened it.

One name was written in Laura's handwriting.

*Patricia Moore.*

I stared at it.

Patricia.

Vanessa's best friend.

The woman who had witnessed the false deed transfer.

The woman who had received money from Daniel.

Laura had suspected her years earlier.

Eleanor spoke softly.

"Laura discovered that Patricia had copied documents from her home office. She confronted her, but Patricia denied everything.""

I felt sick.

"So Patricia has been helping Daniel for years?""

"Possibly. Laura never got enough evidence to prove the full extent of her involvement.""

Robert examined the USB drive.

"Do you know what's on this?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Laura told me it contained copies of correspondence and financial records.""

Robert arranged for the contents to be reviewed safely.

While he worked, Ethan opened another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Laura standing with a younger woman.

He looked confused.

"Who is this?""

Eleanor took the picture.

Her expression changed.

"That's Rebecca.""

"Who?""

"Laura's former assistant.""

I looked at the back.

A date had been written there, along with a note:

Rebecca knows where the original account records are.

Robert looked up.

"Does anyone know how to contact her?""

Eleanor nodded.

"She moved away after Laura died. I haven't spoken to her in years.""

I examined the photograph.

The woman looked to be in her thirties.

"Why would she have the account records?""

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said, "Because Laura asked her to investigate Daniel's financial transactions before she died.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

Mr. Bennett, my name is Rebecca Collins. I worked for your first wife. I heard what happened to Ethan.

A second message followed.

I have the original records showing where Daniel sent the money.

I immediately replied.

Can we meet?

Her response came seconds later.

Yes. But not at your house. Patricia knows I'm back in town.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

And Michael, there's something in those records you need to see before you trust anyone in your family again.
