Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Everything
Eleanor answered on the second ring.
"Hello?""
"Mrs. Bennett, it's Michael.""
There was a long pause.
Then her voice softened.
"Michael. It's been a long time.""
"I know. I'm sorry.""
"Is Ethan all right?""
I looked at Robert.
Then I said, "That's why I'm calling.""
Her tone changed immediately.
"What happened to my grandson?""
I explained everything.
The rent payments.
The money allegedly collected for the mortgage.
The forged loan application.
The attempted deed transfer.
And Daniel's involvement.
Eleanor didn't interrupt once.
When I finished, she remained silent for several seconds.
Then she asked a question that made my stomach turn.
"Did Daniel tell Vanessa that Laura's trust had been revoked?""
"Yes.""
Eleanor exhaled.
"Then he's lying.""
Robert leaned closer to the phone.
"Mrs. Bennett, this is Robert Hayes. I'm reviewing the documents. Do you have the original trust agreement?""
"I do.""
"Can you bring it to my office?""
"I'll be there in two hours.""
Before ending the call, Eleanor said something else.
"Michael, there's something you need to understand. Laura didn't create that trust because she expected you to fail Ethan.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then why?""
"Because she knew how much you loved your brother. She was afraid you would trust Daniel with everything.""
I looked at Robert.
Eleanor continued.
"Daniel had been borrowing money from Laura long before she died. He always had another business idea, another investment, another reason he needed help.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She tried. But you were always defending him.""
That was true.
Daniel had been my little brother since childhood. Our father died when Daniel was sixteen, and I'd spent years trying to make sure he never felt alone.
Laura had once told me that Daniel was becoming irresponsible.
I'd dismissed it.
I had called it jealousy.
Now I was paying for that mistake.
Two hours later, Eleanor arrived carrying a brown leather document case.
She was seventy-two, with silver hair and a straight-backed posture that made her seem taller than she was.
When she saw Ethan sitting beside me, she walked directly toward him.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Ethan stood.
"Grandma.""
She hugged him tightly.
Then she looked at the suitcase beside his chair.
"Are you moving?""
Ethan glanced at me.
"Not anymore.""
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
"Good. Your mother would have hated that.""
She sat down and opened the leather case.
Inside were original trust documents, property records, and several letters.
Robert examined the paperwork.
"This is exactly what we needed.""
Eleanor handed him a sealed envelope.
"Laura gave me this shortly before she died. She told me not to open it unless someone tried to take Ethan's home away.""
I stared at the envelope.
"What does it say?""
Eleanor looked at Ethan.
"Your mother wanted you to have it.""
Ethan carefully opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line was addressed to him.
My darling Ethan, if you're reading this, I hope you've grown into a kind young man who knows he deserves to be treated with love.
Ethan's eyes filled.
He continued reading silently.
Then he handed it to me.
I read the next paragraph.
I have made arrangements to protect your future and your right to a home. Never let anyone convince you that you must pay for the love or security your family should give you.
I couldn't continue.
Eleanor gently touched my arm.
"Keep reading, Michael.""
The next section explained that Laura had created the trust after discovering Daniel had attempted to persuade her to use the house as collateral for one of his business ventures.
She had refused.
Instead, she had appointed Eleanor as successor trustee and required independent oversight of any future changes.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
There is one more thing I want you to know. If anyone tries to transfer this property without the proper authorization, ask Eleanor to show you the blue folder. It contains the evidence I kept after Daniel's first attempt.
I looked up.
"The blue folder?""
Eleanor nodded.
She reached into the leather case and removed a thin blue folder.
"I hoped I'd never have to show you this.""
Robert opened it.
The first document was an old bank statement.
The second was a letter from Daniel.
The third was a photocopy of a check.
I recognized the handwriting on the letter.
It was Daniel's.
He had written to Laura three months before her death, asking her to sign a document that would allow him to manage the property on her behalf.
Laura's handwritten response was attached.
I will never sign away Ethan's future to finance your debts.
Robert studied the papers.
"This could be significant. We need to preserve these originals.""
Eleanor nodded.
"There is more.""
She pulled out another sheet.
It was a printed email from Daniel.
The date was four months after Laura's death.
I read it once.
Then again.
Daniel had written to someone named Vanessa.
The message contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.
Once Michael remarries, we can make the house arrangement look like a normal family decision. Ethan will eventually leave if he believes nobody wants him there.
I looked at my wife.
Vanessa had gone completely pale.
"You knew?"" I whispered.
She shook her head.
"Michael, I swear...""
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
She placed another document on the table.
It was a list of payments Daniel had received over several years.
Some came from Laura.
Others came from Vanessa.
And the most recent entry was dated just three days earlier.
The recipient was Daniel's private business account.
The amount was $25,000.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Where did that money come from?""
She began trembling.
"I didn't have twenty-five thousand dollars.""
Eleanor turned another page.
"Then perhaps you should explain why Daniel's payment record says it came from a loan secured against your husband's property.""
Robert immediately picked up his phone.
"Michael, I need you to listen carefully. We may be dealing with more than one attempted transaction.""
Then Eleanor reached into the folder one last time.
She removed a photograph.
It showed Daniel standing outside a bank with Vanessa.
Between them was a man holding a briefcase.
On the back, Laura had written a date and a name.
Robert read it aloud.
"Richard Coleman.""
He looked at me.
"Michael, do you know who this is?""
I shook my head.
Eleanor's voice dropped.
"He was the man Daniel introduced to Laura when he first tried to take the house.""
Then she pointed to the photograph.
"He's also the man who helped Daniel arrange the paperwork that was supposed to put Ethan out of his own home.""
I stared at the picture.
Because suddenly, the question wasn't just why my wife and brother wanted my house.
It was how many people had been waiting for the chance to take it.
And Eleanor had one final warning.
"Michael, before you confront Daniel, you need to know something about that $180,000 loan.""
She leaned closer.
"Your brother didn't intend to use the money to help Madison.""
May you like
She pointed to the last line of Laura's notes.
"He intended to disappear with it.""
