Chapter 14: The Original Document
Robert didn't react immediately.
He simply placed the partnership agreement inside a folder and looked at Catherine.
"Explain what you mean by the original ownership document.""
Catherine rubbed her forehead.
"Daniel told me Laura had another deed.""
I frowned.
"Another deed?""
"An older document. He said it was signed before the trust was created.""
Robert leaned forward.
"Did you ever see it?""
"No.""
"Did Daniel show you a copy?""
She shook her head.
"Only a photograph.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She seemed confused.
"Laura never mentioned another deed.""
Catherine continued.
"Daniel said the trust was built around an incorrect property transfer. He claimed Laura had changed the ownership arrangements without properly notifying the family.""
Robert shook his head.
"That's not something you can establish through an alleged photograph.""
Catherine looked frustrated.
"I know that now.""
"Why did you believe him?""
She looked at me.
"Because he said you were going to sell the property eventually.""
I stared at her.
"I never said that.""
"He told me you were struggling financially and planned to sell after Ethan moved out.""
I shook my head.
"Daniel invented an entire life for me.""
Catherine lowered her eyes.
"He said if I helped him, I could recover what our father had intended to leave us.""
I felt a strange sadness.
Our father had been gone for sixteen years.
Whatever inheritance he'd left had been settled long ago.
There was no hidden fortune waiting for Catherine.
Daniel had used her resentment to recruit her.
Just as he'd used Vanessa's financial desperation.
Just as he'd used Madison's dependence.
Just as he'd used my loyalty.
Robert asked another question.
"Where is the document now?""
Catherine shook her head.
"I don't know. Daniel said he kept it somewhere safe.""
"Where?""
"At the old Bennett storage property.""
I looked at her.
"Our father's storage unit?""
She nodded.
"It was never emptied.""
I hadn't thought about that place in years.
After our father died, Daniel handled most of the remaining storage arrangements. I'd assumed he'd sold or discarded everything.
"Why didn't you tell me about it?""
"Because Daniel told me not to.""
Robert stood.
"We are not going to search any property without proper authorization. But if you can identify the location and ownership, we can determine the lawful way to preserve any relevant records.""
Catherine nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"Can we talk privately?""
I shook my head.
"Not anymore.""
She looked hurt.
"Michael, I'm your sister.""
"And Ethan is my son.""
She glanced toward him.
"I know.""
"Then you should have thought about him before taking Daniel's money.""
Catherine began crying.
"I never wanted him to lose his home.""
"Then why did you help?""
She had no answer.
Before the meeting ended, Robert asked Catherine to provide all messages and documents related to Daniel's plan.
She agreed.
That afternoon, we arranged for the old storage property to be inspected with the appropriate authorization.
The unit was located outside town, behind a row of aging commercial buildings.
Its metal door was covered in rust.
Catherine stood beside me while Robert's assistant verified the access documents.
When the door finally rolled upward, dust filled the air.
Inside were old furniture, cardboard boxes, and several filing cabinets.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"Your father kept everything.""
We began with the filing cabinets.
Most contained ordinary paperwork.
Old insurance documents.
Tax records.
Business receipts.
Then Ethan noticed a small wooden box beneath a desk.
"Dad, what's this?""
I pulled it out.
It was locked.
Catherine looked at it.
"I've never seen that before.""
Robert examined the box.
There was a small brass lock.
Eleanor reached into her handbag and removed Laura's key.
It didn't fit.
I searched through the nearby drawers and found a small envelope with my father's handwriting.
Inside was another key.
The box opened.
There were three documents inside.
The first was an old property deed.
The second was a letter from our father.
The third was a signed agreement involving Daniel and Catherine.
I unfolded the letter.
To my children,
I know you have argued about the family property. I want you to understand that I never promised either of you ownership of Laura's home.
I looked up.
Catherine was staring at me.
I continued.
The house was purchased and maintained by Laura and Michael. My own estate has already been distributed. No child of mine should attempt to claim something that does not belong to them.
My hands trembled.
The old deed confirmed that the property had been transferred to Laura years before our father died.
It had then passed into the trust according to her estate plan.
There was no hidden ownership claim.
No secret inheritance.
Nothing that supported Daniel's story.
But the third document was even more disturbing.
It was a signed agreement between Daniel and Catherine.
The date was twelve years earlier.
The agreement described a plan to obtain access to family property records and use them to secure financing for a business venture.
Catherine had signed it.
Daniel had signed it.
And at the bottom was a handwritten note.
If Michael refuses to cooperate, use his emotional attachment to Laura and Ethan to pressure him.
I looked at my sister.
She began crying.
"I was young. Daniel told me it was just a business plan.""
"You were old enough to know what you signed.""
"I know.""
Eleanor picked up the document.
"Laura must have discovered this.""
Robert nodded.
"This appears to explain why she established additional protections.""
Then Ethan found another envelope.
It was addressed to me.
My name was written in Laura's handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was a short note.
Michael, if you ever find this, please remember that the people who love you will never ask you to sacrifice your child to prove your loyalty.
I closed my eyes.
Then I noticed something else.
A photograph was tucked behind the letter.
It showed Daniel, Catherine, and Richard standing together outside a building.
On the back was a date.
The date was three days after my wedding to Vanessa.
Beneath it, Laura had written:
They have started again.
I stared at the photograph.
"She knew," I whispered.
Eleanor nodded.
"She knew they might try again.""
Robert placed the photograph inside an evidence sleeve.
"We have enough here to establish a serious pattern of suspicious conduct. I'll coordinate with the appropriate authorities and preserve these records.""
Catherine sat on an old chair, crying.
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you call me?""
She wiped her face.
"Because Daniel told me you'd never believe me.""
I stared at her.
"And you believed him.""
She nodded.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Robert answered his own phone.
He listened for several seconds before looking at me.
"The lender has completed its preliminary fraud review.""
I stood.
"What did they find?""
"The loan application was submitted using your identity, but they have identified additional supporting documents that appear suspicious.""
"Can they stop it?""
"They have suspended the transaction pending further investigation.""
I exhaled.
Then Robert continued.
"There's one more development. The lender has identified a second property application connected to Daniel's company.""
I frowned.
"Whose property?""
Robert looked at the screen.
"Richard Coleman's.""
I stared at him.
Daniel hadn't just been planning to use my home.
He had apparently been using Richard's property as part of the same financial arrangement.
And Richard had finally discovered that his own assets might be involved.

For the first time, I began to suspect that Daniel's partners were turning against one another.
I just didn't realize how quickly things were about to unravel.
