Chapter 9: The Video That Exposed Her
The drive was small.
Almost impossible to believe something so tiny could hold the truth.
Rachel handed it to me the next morning.
“Don’t watch these alone.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because whatever is on here changes everything.””
I took it anyway.
Some things you need to see yourself.
That evening, after Lily fell asleep, Tyler sat beside me.
“You found them?””
I nodded.
He looked nervous.
“Are they bad?””
I looked at him.
“Tyler, did you know about the videos?””
He swallowed.
“Some of them.””
My heart tightened.
“What do you mean?””
He looked down.
“Mom made me record things.””
I froze.
“She made you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He wiped his eyes.
“She said if I helped her, we could finally be a real family.””
I felt anger rise.
But I forced myself to stay calm.
“What did she ask you to record?””
“Lily.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“She wanted proof that Lily was bad.””
I inserted the drive into my laptop.
There were dozens of files.
Dates.
Times.
Descriptions.
The first video opened.
It showed our living room.
Lily was sitting on the floor with her toys.
She looked scared.
Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Tell me what you did.””
Lily looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
“Try again.””
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
Silence.
Then Lily whispered:
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa sighed.
“You always do this.””
I stopped the video.
My hands were shaking.
Tyler covered his face.
“She made her say sorry over and over.””
I opened another file.
This one showed the kitchen.
The broken glass.
The moment Vanessa claimed was Lily’s fault.
But the video showed something completely different.
Vanessa was standing near the counter.
Lily was walking past.
Vanessa reached over.
She knocked the glass down.
It shattered.
Then she looked at Lily.
“Clean it.””
I stopped breathing.
The next file showed the dishes.
The night I came home.
The night I thought was the beginning.
But it wasn’t.
It was the middle.
Vanessa had recorded Lily washing dishes while she and Tyler ate.
Then Vanessa looked at the camera.
And smiled.
Not a mother’s smile.
Not a tired parent’s smile.
A proud smile.
“She’s learning.””
I closed the laptop.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
Tyler started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I turned toward him.
“For what?””
“I should have told you.””
I shook my head.
“You were scared.””
“But Lily needed me.””
I placed my hand on his shoulder.
“You’re a kid too.””
The next morning, we took the evidence to Rachel.
She watched everything.
Then she looked at me.
“This changes the situation completely.””
“What happens now?””
She closed the laptop.
“Now Vanessa can’t control the story anymore.””
For the first time in days, I felt a small piece of hope.
Then my phone rang.
It was Megan.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice was shaking.
“She knows you have the videos.””
I looked at Rachel.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“Where are you?””
No answer.
“Megan?””
A whisper.
Then:
“She found me.””
The call went silent.
And seconds later, a message appeared on my phone.
A photo.
Megan standing outside her apartment.
May you like
And behind her…
Vanessa.
