Chapter 13: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

My brother.

Daniel.

The man who opened his home to me.

The man who held Lily when she cried.

The man who told me I needed to protect my children.

My brother had accessed Lily’s medical records?

“No,” I whispered.

Rachel looked at me carefully.

“I know this is difficult.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“There has to be another explanation.””

Megan lowered her eyes.

“I wanted there to be.””

The judge looked through the documents.

“Mr. Daniel’s involvement needs clarification.””

My stomach twisted.

Daniel wasn’t in the courtroom.

He had left earlier to take care of some things.

I pulled out my phone.

My hand felt numb as I called him.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

He answered.

“Hey.””

His voice sounded normal.

Almost painfully normal.

“Daniel.””

“Yeah?””

“Did you access Lily’s medical records?””

Silence.

Only two seconds.

But enough.

Enough for me to know.

“Daniel?””

He exhaled.

“I can explain.””

My eyes closed.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“Explain what?””

“Not over the phone.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Explain now.””

Another silence.

Then he said:

“I was trying to help.””

I laughed quietly.

“Help who?””

“You.””

“How?””

“By understanding what Vanessa was building.””

My jaw tightened.

“You helped her.””

“No.””

“Then why did your name appear on the request?””

“I needed access.””

“Why?””

His voice became softer.

“Because I knew something was wrong before you did.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I saw things.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What things?””

“Lily hiding food.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“Months ago.””

The words hit me.

Daniel continued.

“She would come to my house and ask if she could take leftovers home.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa convinced me you knew.””

I stared at the floor.

“She said you were aware?””

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“She told me you agreed with the discipline.””

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

“I know that now.””

I looked toward Rachel.

Then back at the phone.

“Daniel, you signed for access to my daughter’s records.””

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa told me she was preparing to prove you were unstable.””

The room went silent.

“She said you were dangerous.””

My heart sank.

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to find proof she was lying.””

I didn’t know what to feel.

Anger.

Relief.

Betrayal.

All mixed together.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

I looked at Lily sitting across the room.

She was coloring quietly.

Still innocent.

Still unaware of how many adults had failed her.

The judge called for a recess.

Rachel approached me.

“You need to decide whether Daniel’s explanation changes anything.””

I looked at her.

“He hid the truth.””

“Yes.””

“But he was trying to expose her.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“This whole thing is unbelievable.””

Rachel placed a hand on the folder.

“There is something else.””

“What?””

She opened another document.

“Daniel wasn’t the only person Vanessa contacted.””

I looked at her.

“Who else?””

Rachel pointed to the page.

A name.

A familiar name.

Someone from my hospital.

The person who had been sending Vanessa information.

The person who had helped access records.

My coworker.

The person who always asked:

“How’s your little girl doing?””

My stomach dropped.

Because suddenly I understood.

Vanessa hadn’t built this alone.

She had been collecting pieces.

From everyone.

The hearing continued.

And then Vanessa’s attorney made one final request.

“Your Honor, my client would like to present new evidence.””

Rachel looked confused.

“What evidence?””

The attorney smiled.

A small, confident smile.

“The father’s history.””

My chest tightened.

“What history?””

The attorney looked directly at me.

Then said:

“Evidence showing he has a pattern of aggression.””

The screen behind them turned on.

And I saw myself.

Not from the night I confronted Vanessa.

From another time.

Another place.

May you like

A moment I had forgotten.

And Vanessa had saved.
