Chapter 7: The Evidence She Tried to Erase

For three seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The message on Vanessa’s phone disappeared almost instantly, but I had already seen enough.

*She knows. Get rid of the evidence before he finds everything.*

Those words stayed in my head.

Not because they were surprising.

Because they confirmed my worst fear.

This wasn’t an accident.

This wasn’t bad parenting.

This was planned.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

Vanessa grabbed her phone.

“Nobody.””

I watched her delete the message.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she had done it before.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Why did you delete it?””

“Because you’re invading my privacy.””

I almost laughed.

“My daughter’s private pain was hidden in a locked closet, and you’re worried about privacy?””

Her face hardened.

“You’ve already decided I’m guilty.””

“No.””

I looked toward the stairs where Lily was sitting quietly.

“I decided I’m going to protect my child.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked at me like she was seeing a different person.

Maybe because she was.

The husband who trusted her was gone.

The father who ignored small signs was gone.

All that was left was a man trying to understand how his daughter had been suffering under his own roof.

I grabbed my keys.

“I’m taking Lily and Tyler somewhere safe.””

Vanessa stepped in front of the door.

“You’re not taking my son.””

Tyler immediately moved away from her.

That tiny movement said everything.

Even Vanessa noticed.

Her expression changed.

“Tyler?””

He looked at the floor.

“I want to go with Dad.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because a mother should never hear her child say those words.

But a child should never feel like he has nowhere else to go.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Fine.””

Her voice became cold.

“Go.””

Tyler looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

That was when I realized something.

Vanessa wasn’t just hurting Lily.

She was destroying every relationship around her.

I took the kids to my brother’s house across town.

The entire drive, Lily sat in the back seat holding her stuffed rabbit.

She barely spoke.

Finally, halfway there, she whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you mad at me?””

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“No.””

“But Mommy said…”

She stopped.

I pulled over.

I turned around.

“What did Mommy say?””

Lily looked embarrassed.

“She said if I made you upset, you might not want me anymore.””

My heart broke.

I climbed into the back seat and hugged her.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“There is nothing you can do that would make me stop loving you.””

“Even if I break things?””

“Even then.””

“Even if I cry?””

“Especially then.””

Her lips trembled.

And for the first time in days, she cried without apologizing.

When we arrived at my brother’s house, Tyler stayed behind with me.

He stood in the driveway, looking nervous.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you going to hate Mom?””

The question surprised me.

I looked at him.

“No.””

He frowned.

“But she did bad things.””

“Yes.””

“Then why not hate her?””

I thought about that.

Because Tyler was still a child.

He needed honesty, not more anger.

“Because hate doesn’t fix anything.””

He nodded slowly.

“But she needs to stop.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

That night, I called Megan again.

She answered immediately.

“I was worried you wouldn’t call.””

“Tell me where the evidence is.””

A long pause.

“I need you to understand something first.””

“What?””

“Vanessa is very good at appearing like the victim.””

I looked at Lily sleeping on the couch.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Megan’s voice lowered.

“She already prepared a story about you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What story?””

“She’s telling people you’re unstable. That you’re exhausted from work. That you’re overreacting.””

I stared into the darkness.

“She’s building a case.””

“Yes.””

“For custody?””

“Yes.””

The word hit hard.

“She was planning this before I found the box.””

Megan was silent.

Then she said:

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“She didn’t just collect pictures of Lily.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

“She recorded conversations.””

“Between who?””

“Between you and Lily.””

I felt a chill.

“Why?””

Megan answered quietly:

“Because she wanted to prove you were emotionally dependent on your daughter.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She wanted to make loving my child look like a weakness?””

“Yes.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A text message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

*You took my children from me. You’re going to regret this.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*You have no idea who you’re fighting.*

I looked at those words.

And I knew Megan was right.

I wasn’t just uncovering what Vanessa had done.

I was discovering how far she was willing to go.
