Chapter 4: The Message That Changed Everything

I stared at Vanessa’s phone screen.

Six words.

That was all.

But they felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.

*I know what you did to Lily.*

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

Not even Tyler.

The only sound in the room was the rain tapping against the bedroom window.

“Who sent that?”” I asked.

Vanessa grabbed her phone and locked the screen.

“Nobody.””

I looked at her.

“Your phone literally says someone knows what you did to our daughter.””

“You’re twisting things.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I’m asking a question.””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re acting like I’m some kind of monster.””

I looked around the room.

The hidden journal.

The locked closet.

The bruise on Lily’s arm.

The fear in my daughter’s eyes.

“I don’t know what you are anymore.””

Her face changed.

For the first time since I walked through that door, she looked scared.

Not angry.

Scared.

“Dad?””

Tyler’s voice came from behind me.

I turned.

He was standing in the doorway, holding something in his hand.

A small piece of paper.

“What is that?”” I asked.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“I found it last week.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Tyler, give me that.””

He moved back.

“No.””

That one word shocked me.

Because Tyler was usually quiet.

He was the kind of kid who apologized when someone bumped into him.

But now he was standing between his mother and a piece of paper.

“Tyler,” Vanessa said sharply.

He flinched.

And then he handed it to me.

I unfolded it.

It was a handwritten note.

The writing was messy.

A child’s handwriting.

But it wasn’t Lily’s.

It said:

*I saw what happened. I should have stopped it sooner.*

My eyes moved lower.

There was a name.

*Megan.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is Megan?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“She’s nobody.””

Tyler shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward him.

“Tyler, what do you know?””

He looked down at the floor.

“Mom told me never to talk about it.””

“Talk about what?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“The day Lily broke the glass.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Tyler, don’t.””

But he continued.

“Lily didn’t break it.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Tyler wiped his face.

“She dropped the plate because Mom scared her.””

Vanessa immediately snapped.

“That is enough.””

“No!”” Tyler shouted.

The sound surprised everyone.

Even him.

He took a shaky breath.

“I heard you yelling at her.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

Tyler shook his head.

“I heard you tell Lily that if she told Dad, nobody would believe her.””

I felt something inside me break.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than any confession.

My hands trembled.

I had spent years trusting this woman.

I had introduced her to my daughter.

I had believed I was building a family.

But while I was saving strangers at the hospital, my own child was begging for help inside my home.

My phone suddenly rang.

The number was unknown.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice whispered:

“Are you Lily’s father?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Megan. I worked with Vanessa last year.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

“Where did you get my number?””

“That doesn’t matter right now.””

Her voice shook.

“What matters is that you need to listen carefully.””

I stepped away from everyone.

“What happened?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“I tried to report what Vanessa was doing.””

My chest tightened.

“Report what?””

Another pause.

“She wasn’t just making Lily do chores.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.””

Megan’s voice became quieter.

“She was keeping records.””

“What kind of records?””

“She was documenting every mistake Lily made.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted proof that Lily was a problem child.””

I felt sick.

“Why would she want that?””

Megan took a breath.

Then she said the words I would never forget.

“Because Vanessa was planning to convince you to send Lily away.””

I looked through the doorway.

Vanessa was watching me.

And for the first time, I saw the truth.

She wasn’t afraid of losing an argument.

She was afraid of losing control.

“Send her away where?”” I asked.

Megan hesitated.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Somewhere you would never be able to bring her back from.””
