Chapter 11: The Mistake I Couldn’t Take Back

I had spent days thinking about protecting Lily.

But suddenly, I remembered something else.

Something I wished I could erase.

The night I came home.

The night I found my daughter crying.

The night Vanessa pushed every button inside me.

I remembered the anger.

The shouting.

The moment I stepped forward.

The moment I slapped her.

My stomach twisted.

Because no matter what Vanessa had done…

That moment was mine.

And she knew it.

“She has the video,” I whispered.

Rachel looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“She’s been recording everything.””

Megan closed her eyes.

“That’s why she wasn’t afraid.””

“What?””

“She knew you would react.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Vanessa had pushed.

She had provoked.

But I still chose my action.

And now she had a weapon.

“I need to tell the truth,” I said.

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“I hit her.””

The room went quiet.

Megan looked at me.

“You need to understand what this means.””

“I do.””

“Then don’t hide it.””

I nodded.

Because hiding the truth was exactly what Vanessa had done.

And I wasn’t going to become like her.

That evening, I sat with Lily.

She was drawing at the table.

A picture of our family.

I looked at it.

There were three people.

Me.

Her.

Tyler.

No Vanessa.

She noticed me looking.

“I didn’t know if I should put Mommy.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

She shrugged.

“Because she doesn’t look happy in pictures.””

I looked down.

“Lily.””

She stopped coloring.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“Sometimes adults make mistakes.””

She nodded.

“Like Mommy?””

I took a breath.

“Yes.””

“Are you mad at her?””

I thought about it.

“I’m hurt.””

She looked at me.

“Because of me?””

“No.””

I touched her hand.

“Never because of you.””

She smiled slightly.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Can Tyler stay with us?””

My heart tightened.

I looked across the room.

Tyler was sitting quietly.

Listening.

I nodded.

“If he wants to.””

Tyler looked up.

“Really?””

“Really.””

His eyes filled with tears.

That was when I realized something.

Lily wasn’t the only child who needed someone to choose them.

The next morning, Rachel called.

“We have a problem.””

I sat up.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa filed for emergency custody.””

My heart dropped.

“Already?””

“Yes.””

“What did she claim?””

Rachel was silent for a moment.

Then:

“She says you are dangerous.””

I closed my eyes.

The exact plan.

“She used the video.””

“Yes.””

“What happens now?””

“There will be a hearing.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

Tomorrow.

One day.

I had one day to prove the truth.

Then Rachel added:

“There’s another issue.””

“What?””

“She submitted evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Medical records.””

I frowned.

“What medical records?””

“Lily’s.””

My blood went cold.

“Why does Vanessa have my daughter’s medical records?””

Rachel paused.

“Because she accessed them.””

I stood.

“She wasn’t supposed to.””

“No.””

“Then how?””

Another silence.

Then Rachel said:

“Because someone inside the hospital helped her.””

My chest tightened.

My workplace.

My hospital.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had access.

And then I remembered something.

A name.

A person who always asked about my family.

A person who knew my schedule.

A person who had recently asked strange questions about Lily.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

*You should have listened when Vanessa warned you.*

I stared at it.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*Your own coworkers know the truth about you.*
