Chapter 5: The Woman Who Tried to Warn Me

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not even for a minute.

I sat beside Lily’s bed until sunrise, watching my daughter breathe.

Every few minutes, she would move slightly and whisper in her sleep.

Sometimes my name.

Sometimes “sorry.””

That was the part that destroyed me.

A child should dream about cartoons.

Friends.

Birthday parties.

Not whether she had disappointed her father.

At 6:30 in the morning, I walked downstairs.

Vanessa was already in the kitchen.

She looked exhausted.

Good.

Because my daughter had been exhausted too.

“You talked to Megan,” she said.

It wasn’t a question.

I stopped.

“How do you know her?””

Vanessa poured coffee into a mug.

“She was obsessed with causing problems.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“She worked with me.””

“And she knows about Lily.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She’s lying.””

“Then explain everything.””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“Explain the journal.””

No answer.

“The bruise.””

Nothing.

“The locked closet.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You went through my things.””

“You hid my daughter’s pain behind a locked door.””

She slammed the mug onto the counter.

“I was trying to help her.””

I stared at her.

“By starving her?””

“She needed structure!””

“She needed love.””

The words hit her.

For a second, I thought she might finally break.

Instead, she became cold.

“You always thought being a father meant saying yes to everything she wanted.””

I shook my head.

“No. Being a father means making sure my child feels safe.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea what it’s like raising her.””

That sentence bothered me.

Not because it was true.

Because of the way she said it.

Like Lily was a burden.

Like she wasn’t a little girl.

“She’s not difficult,” I said.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You don’t know that.””

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

And that scared me more.

Before I could ask again, Lily walked into the kitchen.

Her hair was messy.

She was holding her favorite stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

I immediately softened.

“Good morning, sweetheart.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Are you leaving?””

The question caught me off guard.

“Why would I leave?””

She hugged the rabbit tighter.

“Because Mommy said people leave when kids become too much.””

I felt my heart crack.

I knelt down.

“Lily, look at me.””

She looked into my eyes.

“I will never leave you.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

She nodded slowly.

Then whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“There’s something else in Mommy’s closet.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked scared.

“The red box.””

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Lily.””

My daughter jumped.

I turned toward my wife.

“Don’t.””

The single word stopped her.

Lily continued.

“Mommy said nobody can see it.””

“What’s inside?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked down.

“But she took pictures of me.””

My blood ran cold.

“What kind of pictures?””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“The ones where I was crying.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

But her voice wasn’t confident anymore.

I walked upstairs.

Straight to the closet.

The red box was hidden behind winter clothes.

Exactly where Lily said it was.

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Pictures of Lily crying.

Pictures of Lily standing in the corner.

Pictures of Lily holding signs.

My hands shook as I picked one up.

The sign in the picture said:

*I DID SOMETHING WRONG.*

I looked at the date.

It was from three months ago.

Three months.

Then I found a folder underneath.

A printed document.

A heading at the top made my entire body go numb.

*Child Behavior Assessment Request.*

I read the first sentence.

And I realized Vanessa had been preparing something behind my back.

Something much bigger than punishment.

Something legal.

Then my phone buzzed.

It was Megan again.

One message.

*You found the box, didn’t you?*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*There’s something else you need to know about Vanessa’s son.*
