Chapter 9: The Signature That Changed Everything
I read Daniel's signature three times.
Thirteen years earlier, when Chloe and Sophie were born, Daniel had signed the document authorizing Sophie's transfer.
But Daniel wasn't listed as the biological father.
He wasn't listed as a legal guardian.
He hadn't even been married to me yet.
"How could he sign this?"" I asked.
Michael enlarged the document.
"That's what we need to investigate.""
Evelyn studied the page.
"Was Daniel present during the delivery?""
I shook my head.
"No. He was supposed to be out of town. My father told me Daniel had an emergency business trip.""
Michael looked at me.
"Laura, I think Dad lied about that.""
I turned toward him.
"What?""
"He was there.""
My mouth went dry.
"How do you know?""
Michael opened another file.
It contained an old hospital visitor log.
Daniel's name appeared at 11:18 p.m.
The same night I delivered the twins.
I sat down.
"Why would he be there?""
Michael hesitated.
"Because he was already involved with Vanessa.""
The room went silent.
I looked at the date.
Thirteen years.
The betrayal hadn't started last night.
It had started before I even became a mother.
"Did my father know?""
Michael nodded.
"He discovered the relationship shortly after the birth.""
I covered my face.
My father had watched me recover from childbirth.
He'd brought me flowers.
He'd held Chloe while I slept.
And all that time, he'd known Daniel and Vanessa had been lying to me.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
Michael's voice broke.
"Because Vanessa threatened to expose the family scandal and take Sophie away. Dad believed keeping the arrangement quiet would protect both babies.""
I looked up.
"Protect them from what?""
Michael opened another document.
It was a legal memorandum prepared by my father's attorney.
The document described an incident that occurred the night the twins were born.
According to the report, Daniel had attempted to have Sophie's birth registration changed.
The original hospital record identified both babies as Laura Mitchell's daughters.
A later amendment listed Sophie as the child of Vanessa Mitchell.
But the amendment had never been legally completed.
Someone had submitted it anyway.
Evelyn leaned closer.
"This is important. A hospital record and a legal parentage determination are not the same thing. We need certified copies and the underlying authorization.""
I nodded.
"Can we stop the transfer tomorrow?""
"We can seek emergency court intervention if the evidence supports it.""
She began making calls.
While she spoke with the attorney handling the estate, I studied the documents.
There was one detail I couldn't ignore.
The signature on the newborn transfer authorization looked different from Daniel's signature on the custody petition.
I pointed it out.
"Look at this.""
Michael leaned forward.
"What?""
"The handwriting. The signature on the transfer form is much cleaner.""
Evelyn returned to the table.
She compared both documents.
"You're right. This needs forensic examination.""
I looked at the witness section.
The name was written in capital letters.
*R. MITCHELL.*
My father's name.
I stared.
"Was Dad actually there?""
Michael nodded.
"He signed as the family representative.""
"Then why did Daniel sign too?""
Michael opened another attachment.
It was a letter from my father to his attorney.
Daniel insists the second child must remain outside the household. Vanessa claims she will provide a better life. I do not trust either of them, but I cannot expose the children to another conflict while Laura is recovering.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
My father hadn't simply made a decision.
He'd made a decision for me.
And he'd allowed me to live thirteen years without knowing my own daughter.
I turned to Michael.
"Did Dad ever regret it?""
Michael nodded.
"Every day.""
"Then why didn't he reverse it?""
"Because Vanessa kept threatening to disappear with Sophie.""
I looked at the photograph of the little girl again.
She was no longer a baby.
She was thirteen.
She had friends, schoolwork, favorite songs, and memories of a woman she believed was her mother.
I couldn't simply walk into her life and demand she call me Mom.
But I wasn't going to let anyone send her away to hide the truth.
Evelyn ended her call.
"There's good news and bad news.""
I looked at her.
"The good news is that the school has agreed to pause Sophie's enrollment until guardianship is verified.""
"And the bad news?""
"Daniel has filed an additional emergency motion. He's asking the court to appoint a temporary guardian for all four girls.""
I stared.
"All four?""
"Yes. He's claiming the girls need protection from a family conflict involving disputed parentage and financial allegations.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"He created the conflict!""
Evelyn nodded.
"We'll present the evidence.""
Then she handed me another document.
It was a proposed settlement agreement.
Daniel was offering to withdraw the custody petition if I agreed to transfer the house and release my claims against the trust.
I looked at the amount.
He wanted me to sign away $680,000 in property and abandon any investigation into the missing $420,000.
In exchange, he would leave the girls with me.
I pushed the document away.
"Absolutely not.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Good. Don't sign anything.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*I can make this easy, Laura. Sign the agreement and Sophie stays safe. Refuse, and you'll lose all four girls.*
I showed Evelyn.
She photographed the message for the case file.
Then another message appeared.
This one came from Chloe.
*Mom, Dad just called me. He said I need to choose who I want to live with.*
I immediately called her.
She answered in tears.
"Mom?""
"Sweetheart, where are you?""
"Uncle Michael's.""
"You're safe. Tell me what happened.""
Chloe sniffed.
"Dad said you were keeping secrets about my birth. He said Aunt Vanessa is the only person who knows the truth.""
I closed my eyes.
"Chloe, your father doesn't get to make you choose between people you love.""
"But Mom...""
"Yes?""
She lowered her voice.
"Dad told me something else.""
"What?""
"He said Sophie isn't the only secret.""
I stopped breathing.
"What do you mean?""
Chloe hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Mom, Dad said there's another DNA test. One that proves he isn't the father of Mia either.""
I looked toward Michael.
His expression changed instantly.
"That's impossible," he whispered.
But Chloe wasn't finished.
"He said if I tell you, he'll make sure you never see Mia again.""
I gripped the phone.
"Chloe, listen carefully. You're not responsible for protecting adults' secrets.""
Then she said the words that changed everything.
"Mom, I think Aunt Vanessa knows who Mia's real father is.""
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Four daughters.
Two disputed biological relationships.
One forged custody petition.
And a husband who seemed determined to turn my children's identities into weapons.
Evelyn slowly closed the folder.
"Laura, tomorrow's hearing just became much more complicated.""
Michael looked at the family photographs on the table.
Then he whispered:
"There's one person who can explain all of this.""
"Who?""
He looked at me.
"Vanessa's mother.""
I frowned.
"Our mother is dead.""
Michael shook his head.
"Not the person who raised us.""
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed a woman standing beside Vanessa outside a private clinic.
The woman was older, with silver hair and familiar eyes.
I recognized her immediately.
It was our biological mother.
The woman we'd been told died when I was seventeen.
But the photograph had been taken three weeks ago.
May you like
And on the back, in my father's handwriting, were six words:
*She knows who fathered all four girls.*
