Chapter 14: The Baby Switch Nobody Was Supposed to Discover

For a moment, the school office was completely silent.

I held Lily tighter.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He shook his head furiously.

"Don't listen to her. She's upset.""

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

"Upset? I've spent thirteen years keeping your secrets!""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Vanessa, if you're making an allegation about a child's identity, you need to be precise. Which child are you talking about?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Mia.""

My eleven-year-old daughter.

I felt my knees weaken.

"No.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Mia wasn't born the night you think she was.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. I gave birth to Mia.""

"You gave birth to three babies.""

My mouth went dry.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at Thomas.

"Tell her.""

Thomas's expression was devastated.

"Laura, the original hospital records indicate that there were three infants involved in the delivery arrangements.""

I shook my head.

"Three?""

He nodded.

"Chloe, Sophie, and another baby.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Where is the third baby?""

Vanessa answered.

"She's Mia.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did you say she wasn't my child?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"Because I switched the identification records.""

The room seemed to tilt.

She continued.

"There was another mother in the hospital that night. Her baby was delivered shortly after yours. She died from complications. The hospital was overwhelmed, and your father was already arranging the transfer of Sophie.""

Evelyn interrupted.

"Are you saying two newborns were deliberately misidentified?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Was Mia mine?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

I almost collapsed with relief.

"Then why?""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"Because the other mother had no family. Her daughter would have entered foster care. I thought I could give her a better life.""

I stared at my sister.

"You changed my child's identity?""

"I was trying to protect her.""

"You had no right!""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

She turned toward him.

"No. You wanted the truth hidden. You can finally listen.""

She pointed at him.

"Daniel knew about the records. He helped change the paperwork because he wanted to make sure Lily was the only child whose biological parentage could be questioned.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why?""

He looked away.

Vanessa continued.

"Because he believed Lily would be entitled to a different inheritance arrangement. He thought the other girls could be used to pressure Laura into giving up the house and the trust.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"That assumption is legally unsupported. The trust must be interpreted according to its actual terms.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Nobody cared about the terms. Daniel just wanted control.""

Thomas stepped toward her.

"And what did you want?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I wanted a daughter.""

"You already had Sophie through an arrangement you agreed to.""

"An arrangement that was supposed to make me a mother!""

Thomas's voice hardened.

"You were supposed to be her temporary guardian.""

Vanessa began crying again.

"I loved her.""

I stepped forward.

"And you thought that gave you the right to steal her from me?""

She looked at me.

"You had everything, Laura.""

"No. I had a family. And you spent thirteen years dismantling it.""

Daniel suddenly grabbed Vanessa's folder.

He pulled out several documents and tried to tear them.

The school security officer moved immediately.

"Sir, put that down!""

Daniel threw the folder onto the floor.

Then he turned toward me.

"You have no idea what you've done.""

I looked at him.

"I found my daughter.""

He pointed at Lily.

"You think you can keep all of them? Wait until the judge sees what you've hidden.""

Evelyn held up her phone.

"The judge will see the original records, the forged signatures, the financial transfers, and the messages you've sent.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

"We've preserved your communications. Your own messages threatening Mrs. Mitchell are part of the evidence.""

He looked at Vanessa.

"You recorded me?""

She shook her head.

"Not me.""

Michael appeared in the doorway.

He was holding a small digital recorder.

"I did.""

Daniel's face went white.

Michael stepped inside.

"Laura, I'm sorry.""

I stared at him.

"What did you record?""

"Conversations between Daniel, Vanessa, and Patricia. I found the original audio files on Dad's backup drive.""

Evelyn took the recorder.

"These will need authentication.""

Michael nodded.

"There's also a message from Patricia. She admitted she helped prepare the forged guardianship documents.""

Daniel backed toward the door.

The security officer stopped him.

"Sir, you'll need to remain here while we clarify the situation.""

Daniel shouted.

"You can't arrest me!""

"I'm not arresting you. I'm asking you to cooperate.""

Vanessa sat motionless.

Then she looked at me.

"Laura, please. I know you hate me.""

I stared at her.

"I don't know what I feel anymore.""

"I really did love Sophie.""

"You could have loved her without lying to her.""

Vanessa lowered her head.

I turned toward Lily.

"Let's go home, sweetheart.""

But before we left, Evelyn received a call from the family court clerk.

She listened carefully.

Then she covered the phone.

"Laura, tomorrow's hearing has been moved forward. The judge wants everyone present at eight tomorrow morning.""

"Why?""

Evelyn looked at the documents in her hand.

"Because the court received a new emergency filing.""

"From Daniel?""

"No.""

She turned the phone toward me.

The filing had been submitted by Sophie herself, through an appointed legal representative.

I stared.

"Why would Sophie file anything?""

Evelyn read the statement.

"She is requesting that the court hear her wishes before any change to her guardianship.""

I felt tears fill my eyes.

My daughter was finally beginning to question the story she'd been told.

Then Evelyn read the final paragraph.

Sophie had written:

I want to know who my real mother is. But I also want to know why everyone lied to me.

I covered my mouth.

For thirteen years, adults had made decisions about her life without asking what she wanted.

Tomorrow, she would finally have a voice.

May you like

And I knew one thing.

Whatever happened in that courtroom, I would not let anyone silence her again.
