Chapter 1: The Little Girl on the Cold Floor

At 6:07 a.m., I found my five-year-old daughter sleeping on the kitchen floor while my husband enjoyed a warm bed upstairs with my younger sister.

I had spent twelve hours saving strangers' lives in an Atlanta emergency room.

I never imagined I'd come home to discover that my own family was falling apart.

"Mommy...""

Lily's tiny voice made me stop in the kitchen doorway.

She was curled beside the refrigerator, wearing pink unicorn pajamas. Her bare feet were tucked beneath her body, and her little arms were wrapped around a stuffed elephant.

The kitchen tiles were freezing.

"Lily?"" I dropped my hospital bag.

"Baby, what are you doing down here?""

She opened her eyes slowly.

"You're home.""

I rushed toward her and touched her cheek.

Cold.

Terrifyingly cold.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

I pulled off my jacket and wrapped it around her.

"Why didn't you sleep in your bed?""

Lily glanced toward the staircase.

"Daddy said I had to play Silent Soldier.""

My exhaustion disappeared.

"What's Silent Soldier?""

"I'm not allowed to make noise. And I'm not allowed upstairs.""

"Since when?""

"Yesterday.""

I stared at her.

"Baby, where is Daddy?""

She hugged her elephant tighter.

"With Aunt Vanessa.""

My sister.

Vanessa had been staying with us for three weeks after claiming her apartment had developed a serious plumbing problem.

I'd offered her our guest bedroom.

I'd bought her groceries.

I'd even given her money to help with her rent.

And now my five-year-old was sleeping on the kitchen floor while Vanessa occupied my upstairs bedroom.

I kissed Lily's forehead.

"Stay here, sweetheart. Mommy needs to check something.""

"Don't tell Daddy I talked.""

That sentence nearly broke me.

I climbed the stairs quietly.

The guest bedroom door was partly open.

A familiar laugh came from inside.

Vanessa's laugh.

Then Daniel's voice.

"Relax. Laura won't be home until seven.""

I stopped breathing.

I pushed the door open.

My husband was lying in bed beside my sister.

Vanessa's blonde hair covered his pillow. Her dress was hanging over the bedroom chair, and Daniel's wedding ring sat on the nightstand.

For several seconds, neither noticed me.

Then Vanessa opened her eyes.

Her smile vanished.

"Laura?""

Daniel sat upright.

"Jesus Christ! What are you doing home?""

I stared at him.

"I live here.""

He grabbed the bedsheet.

"Listen, this isn't what you think.""

Vanessa pulled the blanket to her chin.

"Laura, please. Let me explain.""

I looked at my sister.

"Did you at least let my daughter sleep in her own bed?""

Neither answered.

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Don't start making a scene.""

"A scene?""

I pointed toward the staircase.

"Your five-year-old daughter was sleeping on the kitchen floor.""

Daniel sighed.

"She was being difficult. We were playing a game.""

"She's five, Daniel.""

"She wanted attention.""

I felt something inside me turn cold.

Then I noticed the gray folder beside his pillow.

Its cover had a law firm's name printed across it.

I picked it up.

Daniel immediately reached for it.

"Don't touch that.""

I stepped away.

The first document concerned my family home.

The property my father had left me before he died.

Its estimated value was $680,000.

The second document was a transfer agreement.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature.

Except the signature wasn't mine.

"Daniel," I whispered.

"What is this?""

He swung his legs out of bed.

"Put it down.""

I turned another page.

It was a custody petition.

My three daughters were listed by name.

Lily, five.

Mia, eleven.

Chloe, thirteen.

The petition described me as an emotionally unstable mother who neglected her children because of my hospital schedule.

Daniel was requesting primary custody.

And beneath his name was the proposed secondary caregiver.

Vanessa Mitchell.

My sister.

I looked at her.

She didn't look surprised.

That was when I understood something.

This wasn't a spontaneous affair.

It was a plan.

"How long?"" I asked.

Daniel buttoned his shirt.

"You're misunderstanding the paperwork.""

"How long have you been planning to take my children?""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Laura, you need to calm down.""

I looked at her.

"Don't ever tell me to calm down again.""

I photographed every page.

Daniel's face changed when he saw my phone.

"Delete those pictures!""

"No.""

"Laura, I'm warning you.""

I picked up my jacket.

"Good. Because I'm warning you, too.""

Then I walked downstairs, lifted Lily into my arms, and woke her sisters.

Fifteen minutes later, all three girls were in my car.

As I pulled away, my phone began ringing.

Daniel.

I answered on speaker.

"WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?"" he shouted.

I glanced at Lily.

"Why was your daughter sleeping on the kitchen floor?""

"She was exaggerating!""

Lily suddenly leaned toward the phone.

"Daddy?""

Silence.

"Am I still getting my puppy?""

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

Then Lily whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"I stayed quiet all night. I didn't even cry.""

Daniel hung up.

And before I reached the highway, he called again.

This time, he wasn't shouting.

He was begging me to come home.

Because apparently, the folder contained something he hadn't wanted me to find.

May you like

Something involving my father's estate.

And a signature that wasn't mine.
