Chapter 12: The Confession That Destroyed Daniel's Plan
Thomas Bennett was sitting in an interview room when we arrived.
He stood as soon as he saw me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
He looked at Chloe's photograph, which I was holding.
Then he looked at my face.
"Laura?""
I nodded.
"My name is Thomas.""
"I know.""
His eyes filled.
"I've wanted to meet you for years.""
I didn't move.
"You knew about my daughters.""
"Yes.""
"You knew I was raising them without knowing you existed.""
He lowered his head.
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you come?""
He looked devastated.
"Because Vanessa told me you didn't want me near them. She said you had threatened to have me arrested if I contacted your family.""
I stared at him.
"And you believed her?""
"I believed the documents she showed me. I was wrong.""
Evelyn pulled out a chair.
"Mr. Bennett, we need to discuss the house transfer and the financial transactions.""
Thomas nodded.
"I expected that.""
He removed a folder from his briefcase.
"The company that purchased Laura's property is mine, but I never authorized the purchase.""
I looked at him.
"Who did?""
"Daniel.""
Thomas opened the folder.
"Daniel used a business power of attorney I signed six months ago. He told me he needed it to manage an investment portfolio.""
Evelyn examined the document.
"Was the power of attorney limited?""
"Yes. It only covered specific financial transactions.""
She studied the authorization.
"Then this property purchase may have exceeded its scope.""
Thomas nodded.
"I discovered it yesterday.""
I sat down.
"Why would Daniel use your company?""
"Because he wanted the house transferred into an entity connected to the trust. He believed that would make it easier to challenge your ownership.""
"Did Vanessa know?""
Thomas looked at me.
"She arranged the entire transaction.""
He opened another document.
It was an email from Vanessa.
Daniel will handle the legal transfer. You only need to remain available as the buyer. Once the custody order is granted, everything will be clean.
I felt sick.
Thomas continued.
"She also told me that Sophie would eventually inherit the property.""
I looked up.
"She told you Sophie was your daughter?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know about Chloe and Mia?""
He nodded.
"I found out three months ago.""
"Did you know Lily was Daniel's?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Yes.""
I frowned.
"Then why did you help Vanessa?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Because she threatened me.""
"With what?""
"She had obtained medical records and DNA information. She said she'd expose the circumstances surrounding the children's births and make sure I lost any chance of meeting them.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't explain the money.""
Thomas looked down.
"I received payments from Vanessa. I believed they were compensation for helping recover my inheritance rights. I now understand that some of that money came from the girls' accounts.""
Evelyn wrote something down.
"Are you willing to provide the complete records?""
"Yes.""
"Even if they implicate you?""
Thomas nodded.
"Especially then.""
I studied him.
I didn't know whether I could trust him.
He was a stranger who shared the biological connection to three of my daughters.
He had been absent for thirteen years.
And his company had become part of a scheme involving my home.
But at least he was finally telling the truth.
Thomas reached into his briefcase and removed a small envelope.
"Your father gave me this.""
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My father's.
"Why do you have that?""
"He asked me to deliver it if I ever found you.""
I opened it.
Laura,
I made mistakes. Some of them were unforgivable. I believed I could protect everyone by keeping the truth hidden. Instead, I gave other people the opportunity to control your life.
I swallowed.
There are four girls who need their mother. Whatever happens to the money, the property, or the family name, do not allow anyone to turn those children against one another.
The letter ended with a sentence.
The truth about Sophie is not the final secret. The final secret concerns the person who has been helping Vanessa from the beginning.
I looked at Thomas.
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he placed another document on the table.
It was a payment authorization from the Mitchell family trust.
The date was three months earlier.
The amount was $90,000.
The recipient was a law firm representing Daniel.
But the authorization had been approved by someone else.
Someone with access to the estate records.
I recognized the name.
Patricia Grant.
My father's estate attorney.
The same woman who had called me about the forged incapacity document.
I looked at Evelyn.
"Could she have been involved?""
Evelyn examined the signature.
"We cannot assume that. The authorization needs independent verification.""
Thomas leaned forward.
"There's a recording.""
He handed her a flash drive.
"Vanessa made the recording during a meeting. She believed it would protect her if anyone tried to betray her.""
Evelyn arranged for the recording to be copied and preserved.
Then she played it.
Vanessa's voice came through first.
"Patricia, everything is ready. The custody hearing is tomorrow.""
A second voice responded.
"Daniel needs to be careful. If the forged medical certification is exposed, the entire petition could collapse.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Then make sure Laura never gets the original records.""
The second woman sighed.
"And what happens to Sophie?""
"She goes with me.""
"Your agreement with Robert was temporary.""
"Robert is dead.""
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood turn cold.
"Besides, Patricia, you helped arrange the original transfer. You know what happens if those records become public.""
The recording ended.
I looked at Evelyn.
"Patricia helped Vanessa?""
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"It appears that way, but the recording needs authentication.""
Thomas opened another file.
It contained the original guardianship agreement.
The final page had a handwritten amendment.
I recognized my father's signature.
But the amendment was dated after his supposed death.
My eyes widened.
"How is that possible?""
Thomas leaned forward.
"Because your father wasn't dead when that amendment was signed.""
I stared at him.
"What are you saying?""
He took a breath.
"Your father survived the first medical emergency. He was conscious for several hours. During that time, he contacted me.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"But the hospital told us he died that night.""
Thomas shook his head.
"Someone changed the timeline.""
I looked at Michael.
He was staring at the floor.
"Michael?""
He didn't answer.
Thomas continued.
"Your father told me Vanessa had arranged for him to be transferred to another facility. He believed someone was trying to obtain his signature on documents.""
"Did he recover?""
Thomas's face crumpled.
"No.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then what happened?""
"He died two days later.""
The room fell silent.
Evelyn picked up the amendment.
"This document could change everything. We need to verify the date, the witnesses, and the medical records.""
I looked at Michael.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He finally raised his eyes.
"Because I was there.""
My heart stopped.
"You were there when Dad died?""
He nodded.
"And you let me believe he died the first night?""
Michael began crying.
"Laura, I thought I was protecting you.""
I stood.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
He reached toward me.
I stepped away.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a message from Vanessa.
*You have ten minutes to withdraw your statement. Otherwise, Chloe will learn what happened the night she was born.*
A second message appeared.
It contained a photograph of Chloe leaving school.
And beneath it were six words.
*I know where your daughter is.*
I immediately called Chloe.
No answer.
I called Mia.
No answer.
Then Lily's school number appeared on my screen.
I answered.
"Mrs. Mitchell?"" the secretary said, sounding frightened.
"There's a woman here asking to collect Lily.""
"Who?""
"She says she's her aunt Vanessa.""
I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.
"DO NOT RELEASE MY CHILD!""
The secretary lowered her voice.
"Mrs. Mitchell, she has a document with your signature.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She was already reaching for her phone.
Then the secretary whispered:
"There's something else. Vanessa isn't alone.""
I held my breath.
"Who is with her?""
The secretary answered.
"Your husband.""
May you like
And as I ran toward the door, my phone received one final message from Daniel.
*The hearing is tomorrow, Laura. But tonight, you're going to lose everything.*
