Chapter 11: The Man Behind the Four Million Dollars

I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

Thomas Bennett.

The biological father of three of my daughters.

A man I'd never met.

A man everyone had claimed was dead.

A man who had apparently been meeting my sister while she plotted to take my children.

"Where is he?"" I asked.

Margaret folded her hands.

"I don't know his current address.""

"How can you know he's alive but not where he lives?""

"Because Vanessa arranged the meetings.""

Evelyn interrupted.

"Did Thomas know he had three daughters?""

Margaret nodded.

"He knew about Chloe. He discovered the truth about the twins later.""

"Then why didn't he contact Laura?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Because Vanessa told him you had abandoned them.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"She told him I abandoned my own children?""

"She showed him documents claiming you had voluntarily given Sophie away and had no interest in raising the others.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Those documents are forged.""

"Possibly," she replied.

"But we need the originals.""

Margaret removed a small USB drive from her handbag.

"Your father gave me this before he disappeared.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What's on it?""

"Recordings. Financial documents. And a video from Thomas.""

Evelyn immediately asked to preserve it as evidence.

We arranged for a forensic copy before opening anything.

The first folder contained bank statements.

The second contained correspondence between Vanessa and Daniel.

The third contained a video file.

I pressed play.

A man appeared on the screen.

He looked older than the photograph, with gray hair and deep lines around his eyes.

"My name is Thomas Bennett," he began.

"I am recording this because I believe someone is using my daughters to obtain control of the Mitchell family trust.""

I stopped breathing.

He continued.

"Vanessa contacted me two years ago. She told me that Laura had abandoned the children and that she was raising them alone.""

The video showed Thomas holding several documents.

"She claimed that if I helped her financially, she would arrange for me to meet the girls.""

My hands trembled.

"I didn't know the truth until recently. I have never abandoned my daughters. I was told they didn't want to know me.""

He paused.

"Then I received a photograph of Chloe.""

He looked directly into the camera.

"She has my eyes.""

Tears filled my vision.

The video continued.

"Vanessa demanded $250,000 to arrange a private guardianship agreement. She said Daniel had already prepared the necessary paperwork.""

I looked at Michael.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand?""

He nodded.

The next document showed payments from Thomas to Vanessa.

Four transfers.

The total was $250,000.

But there was another account.

A company called Bennett Family Holdings.

It had received money from Daniel, Vanessa, and the trust administration account.

Evelyn examined the statements.

"This isn't simply a custody dispute. There may be financial fraud, forged documents, and misappropriation of trust assets. We need to preserve everything and have the appropriate authorities investigate.""

Michael opened another file.

It contained a recording of a phone conversation.

Vanessa's voice was unmistakable.

"Once the girls are under my guardianship, Thomas can finally claim his inheritance through them.""

A man's voice responded.

"And Laura?""

Vanessa laughed.

"Laura will be too busy defending herself to notice anything.""

The man asked, "What about the house?""

"Daniel gets the house. I get Sophie. Thomas gets access to the trust. Everyone gets what they want.""

I closed the laptop.

My sister had divided my family like property.

Evelyn looked at the bank records.

"There's something missing.""

"What?""

"The $420,000 from the girls' accounts. We can trace the receiving company, but we need to know who ultimately controlled the money.""

Michael opened the final spreadsheet.

The money had been transferred through three companies.

The final account belonged to Bennett Family Holdings.

I looked at Margaret.

"Thomas received the money?""

She nodded.

"But I don't believe he knew where it came from.""

"Why would Vanessa send him stolen money?""

"Because she wanted him to believe it was his rightful share of the estate.""

I shook my head.

"None of this makes sense.""

Margaret reached across the table.

"Your father created a separate inheritance arrangement for his grandchildren. Vanessa discovered it. She realized that if she controlled Sophie, she could interfere with the trust.""

Evelyn corrected her gently.

"Guardianship doesn't automatically confer ownership or authority over a child's inheritance. But someone could attempt to manipulate the arrangement.""

I looked at the four DNA reports.

"Why Lily?""

Margaret studied the final report.

"Because Lily is the only one who is Daniel's biological child.""

"Does that matter?""

"It matters to Daniel.""

I frowned.

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Daniel believed your father would leave Lily a larger share because she was his only biological grandchild through you.""

I stared.

"But Dad loved all my daughters equally.""

"I know. That's why he changed the trust.""

Michael opened another document.

The amendment had been signed two weeks before my father died.

It divided the inheritance equally among all four girls.

But there was a condition.

Each child had to be legally identified before reaching adulthood.

Vanessa had discovered the clause and believed she could use the disputed parentage records to delay the distribution.

"That's why she hid Sophie," I whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

"And why she wants to control the custody proceedings.""

Then Michael's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"Where?""

He listened for several seconds.

Then he slowly lowered the phone.

"Thomas is at the police station.""

I stood.

"Why?""

"He turned himself in.""

Evelyn immediately gathered the documents.

"Did he explain why?""

Michael shook his head.

"He says he has evidence that could clear Laura of every allegation.""

I felt a flicker of hope.

"Then let's go.""

But Michael wasn't finished.

"He also claims Daniel has been planning something much bigger than the custody hearing.""

"What?""

Michael looked directly at me.

"Daniel has already sold the family house.""

My blood ran cold.

"That's impossible. He doesn't own it.""

"Apparently, someone recorded the forged transfer agreement before the sale.""

I grabbed my bag.

"Who bought it?""

Michael showed me the buyer's name.

Bennett Family Holdings.

Thomas's company.

The same company that had received the stolen trust money.

I stared at the screen.

Thomas had bought my father's house.

Or someone had used his company to do it.

And suddenly, I understood why he had surrendered himself.

May you like

He wasn't simply coming forward to meet his daughters.

He was trying to stop someone from taking everything.
