Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the sound of my daughters breathing.

The terminal seemed to disappear around me.

I stared at the authorization form.

Piper Mitchell.

Poppy Mitchell.

Two names I'd chosen while lying in a hospital bed, exhausted and terrified, wondering whether I could raise two babies without their father.

Someone had already been making plans for them.

Without me.

"Who submitted this?"" I asked.

Rachel adjusted her glasses.

"The application was filed through a private travel-document service. The contact information belongs to Margaret Mitchell.""

I looked at Tyler.

"Your mother?""

He rubbed his face.

"Emily, my mother would never hurt the girls.""

"Then why is she trying to get travel documents for them without telling me?""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"Maybe Margaret was just trying to help.""

I turned toward her.

"Nobody asked you.""

She rolled her eyes.

"You're acting like someone is kidnapping your children.""

Michael's voice cut through the conversation.

"Vanessa, perhaps you should be careful about discussing kidnapping.""

Her expression changed.

Rachel opened the folder again.

"There's something else. The travel application lists an emergency contact in the Bahamas.""

"Who?"" I asked.

She looked down.

"Vanessa Bennett.""

I felt my grip tighten around Poppy.

Tyler stared at his girlfriend.

"Why would your name be on my daughters' travel application?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Ask your mother.""

"Why would my mother contact you?""

She shrugged.

"Maybe because she knows I'm more responsible than you.""

Tyler stepped toward her.

"Stop playing games.""

Michael moved between them.

"Enough. We're not doing this in the middle of a public terminal.""

He turned to Rachel.

"Let's show them the payment records.""

Rachel placed a second folder on the table.

Inside were printed bank transfers, email confirmations, and copies of identification documents.

"Mr. Mitchell," she said, "we discovered that several passengers received refund confirmations for canceled excursions, but the refunds were never deposited into their original payment methods.""

Tyler shook his head.

"I worked in entertainment. I had nothing to do with passenger refunds.""

Rachel nodded.

"That was our initial assumption.""

She showed him a transaction record.

"However, someone used your employee credentials to approve internal transfers.""

Michael pointed to the account number.

"Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.""

Tyler looked genuinely terrified.

"I didn't do that.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Of course you didn't. You're always the victim.""

He spun toward her.

"You said everything was handled!""

The silence that followed was deafening.

Michael slowly lowered his eyes to Tyler.

"What exactly did you just say?""

Tyler's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"Nothing. He didn't mean anything.""

But Michael had heard enough.

Rachel wrote something on her notepad.

"Mr. Mitchell, I strongly advise you not to discuss this investigation with anyone until we've completed our review.""

Tyler looked at me.

"Emily, you have to believe me.""

I stared at him.

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

His expression softened.

"Baby, please. We can talk about this at home.""

I almost laughed.

Home?

The place where I'd spent months changing diapers, heating bottles, and sleeping with my phone beside my pillow?

The place where he'd promised to return?

"Do you even remember when Piper was born?"" I asked.

Tyler blinked.

"What?""

"What date?""

He hesitated.

"Of course I do.""

"Then tell me.""

His eyes moved toward the floor.

I waited.

He couldn't answer.

Poppy began crying.

I rocked her gently.

"She was born on August 3rd," I whispered.

"Her sister arrived eleven minutes later. You were supposed to be on a video call, but you never answered.""

Tyler looked ashamed.

"Emily, I was busy.""

"Busy doing what?""

He didn't respond.

Vanessa checked her phone again.

Then I noticed something.

She was wearing a delicate gold bracelet with a tiny engraved heart.

It looked familiar.

I'd seen it before.

In a photograph Tyler had sent me from the ship.

He'd claimed it was a promotional gift from the cruise company.

But the bracelet had something engraved on the inside.

A date.

August 3rd.

My daughters' birthday.

I looked at Vanessa's wrist.

"Where did you get that bracelet?""

She covered it with her hand.

"What?""

"The bracelet. Where did it come from?""

She smiled.

"Tyler gave it to me.""

I looked at my husband.

He said nothing.

"When?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"On August 3rd.""

The world tilted.

"That was the day I gave birth.""

She shrugged.

"Well, he wasn't here, was he?""

Tyler whispered, "Vanessa, stop.""

But she wasn't finished.

"He told me you were already separated. He said the marriage was basically over.""

I stared at Tyler.

"You told her we were separated?""

He reached for my arm.

"Emily, listen—"

I stepped away.

"Don't touch me.""

Michael closed the folder.

"There's one more thing we haven't discussed.""

Vanessa's expression became guarded.

"Michael, please.""

He ignored her.

"Emily, do you remember receiving a package from your mother-in-law about two months ago?""

I frowned.

"Yes. It was a birthday gift for the babies.""

"Did you open it?""

"Of course.""

"What was inside?""

"A silver picture frame. Two little blankets. And some paperwork about a family trust.""

Rachel looked up sharply.

"Family trust?""

I nodded.

"Margaret said she wanted to make sure the girls were financially protected.""

Michael exchanged a look with Rachel.

"What paperwork did you sign?""

My stomach tightened.

"Nothing. I didn't understand the legal language, so I put it away.""

"Where is it now?""

"At home.""

Michael turned to Rachel.

"That's what I was afraid of.""

Tyler looked confused.

"What's going on?""

Michael opened the folder to a final section.

"This investigation began with missing passenger funds. But when we examined the accounts connected to those transactions, we found something much more disturbing.""

He placed a document in front of me.

It was a trust agreement.

My name appeared near the bottom.

So did Tyler's.

And Margaret's.

But the final page contained a clause I had never seen.

I read it twice.

Then my hands began shaking.

The agreement named Margaret Mitchell as the temporary guardian of Piper and Poppy under certain financial circumstances.

I looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Rachel spoke slowly.

"It means someone may have been preparing to claim legal control over your daughters if your husband became unavailable.""

Tyler stared at his mother-in-law's signature.

"That's insane. My mother wouldn't do that.""

Michael pointed to another line.

"Your mother's name isn't the only one here.""

I leaned closer.

There was a second signature.

Vanessa Bennett.

And beneath it, a date.

Six months before Vanessa supposedly met Tyler aboard the Ocean Majesty.

My throat went dry.

I looked at Vanessa.

"How could you have signed a document involving my daughters before you even knew my husband?""

For the first time since I'd arrived, Vanessa had absolutely nothing to say.

Then Michael removed his phone and placed it on the table.

"I think it's time we called Margaret.""

Tyler shook his head.

"Don't.""

Michael pressed the call button.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

"Hello, Michael.""

Michael put the call on speaker.

"Margaret, we're at the Miami terminal with your son, Emily, and Vanessa.""

There was a long silence.

Then Margaret spoke.

"Is Emily there?""

I leaned toward the phone.

"Yes, Margaret. I'm here.""

Her voice suddenly became cold.

"Then listen carefully, Emily. You need to take those babies and go home.""

I looked at the unsigned travel application.

"Why? What are you planning to do with my daughters?""

Margaret sighed.

"Because you don't understand what you've signed.""

My blood turned cold.

"I haven't signed anything.""

Another silence.

Then she whispered five words.

"Tyler wasn't supposed to survive.""

May you like

The call disconnected.

And my husband collapsed into the nearest chair.
