Chapter 1: The Homecoming That Broke My Heart

"Daddy's here, girls. You're finally going to meet him.""

I whispered those words to my three-month-old twin daughters as I adjusted the pink blankets covering their tiny bodies.

Piper was asleep against my chest. Poppy was wide awake, staring at the ceiling of the Miami cruise terminal with enormous blue eyes.

I'd imagined this moment a thousand times.

For five months, my husband, Tyler Mitchell, had been working aboard the luxurious Ocean Majesty, traveling between Caribbean islands as a senior entertainment manager.

When he left, I was seven months pregnant.

He'd kissed my forehead before boarding and promised he'd be home before our daughters turned three months old.

"Emily, I hate leaving you like this," he'd whispered.

"But this contract will change our future. When I come home, we'll finally have enough money for the house you've always wanted.""

I'd believed him.

I'd believed everything.

I gave birth to our daughters without him.

I remembered gripping the hospital bed while a nurse held my hand and another doctor counted down the seconds between contractions.

"Your husband isn't going to make it?"" the nurse asked gently.

I shook my head.

"He'll be here next time.""

But there wasn't going to be another time.

There were just two beautiful little girls, an empty chair beside my hospital bed, and a phone that barely rang.

Tyler had promised to video-call every night.

At first, he did.

Then the calls became shorter.

Sometimes he claimed the ship's internet wasn't working. Other times, he said he was exhausted.

Whenever I asked about his return date, he changed the subject.

Still, I defended him.

My mother told me I was making excuses.

"Emily, a good husband doesn't disappear when his wife is having babies.""

"He's working, Mom," I'd replied.

"He's doing this for us.""

Now, standing in the terminal with our daughters, I was finally going to surprise him.

I'd even bought a little white sign that read:

WELCOME HOME, DADDY!

Piper's tiny fingers curled around the edge of the blanket.

I smiled through my exhaustion.

"Let's make this special.""

Then the arrival doors opened.

Passengers began pouring into the terminal.

Families embraced. Children screamed with excitement. Suitcases rolled across the polished floor.

And then I saw him.

Tyler.

My husband.

He looked exactly as handsome as I remembered, wearing a white linen shirt, dark sunglasses, and the expensive watch I'd given him for our anniversary.

But there was something else.

He wasn't walking alone.

A tall blonde woman in a cream-colored dress had her arm wrapped around his waist.

She leaned toward him, laughing at something he whispered.

Then Tyler stopped beside a luggage cart, pulled her against him, and kissed her.

Not a friendly kiss.

Not an accidental moment.

A long, intimate kiss.

My fingers went numb.

The welcome-home sign slipped from my hand and landed on the floor.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Then Tyler lifted his head.

His eyes found mine.

The smile disappeared from his face.

"Emily?""

I took one step forward.

"Surprise.""

He looked at the babies.

Then at the blonde woman.

Then back at me.

"What the hell are you doing here?""

The question hit harder than the kiss.

I swallowed.

"I wanted you to meet your daughters.""

The blonde woman pulled away from him.

"Wait. What?""

She looked at the twins, then at my wedding ring.

"Tyler, who is this?""

I stared at her.

"I'm his wife.""

Her mouth opened.

Then she burst into a laugh that sounded almost nervous.

"You're joking.""

Tyler rubbed his forehead.

"Emily, this isn't the time.""

I tightened my hold on Piper.

"Then when is the time? When you've finished kissing her?""

The woman crossed her arms.

"Don't be dramatic, sweetheart. Men get lonely when they're away from home.""

I stared at her.

"What's your name?""

"Vanessa.""

"Vanessa what?""

She smiled.

"Just Vanessa.""

Tyler stepped between us.

"Emily, I told you to stay home.""

I felt something inside me crack.

"You told me to stay home? Tyler, I was seven months pregnant when you left. I delivered our daughters without you. I spent three months raising them alone.""

He glanced at the babies again.

"Look, I know this is awkward.""

"Awkward?""

My voice trembled.

"Is that what you call it?""

Vanessa checked her phone.

"Tyler, we're going to be late for dinner.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You're leaving with her?""

He shrugged.

"We've made plans.""

I looked down at Poppy, who had begun fussing.

Then I looked at the man I'd loved for four years.

"Are you at least going to hold your daughters?""

Tyler hesitated.

For one beautiful, foolish second, I thought he might reach for them.

Instead, he adjusted his watch.

"Not now, Emily.""

Not now.

As if meeting his own children could be postponed like a business appointment.

I nodded slowly.

"Okay.""

He looked relieved.

But I wasn't finished.

"Actually, Tyler, someone else came to welcome you home.""

I pointed toward the glass entrance.

A black SUV was parked outside.

A tall man in a navy suit stepped out.

Beside him was another woman carrying a thick leather folder.

The blonde woman turned.

Her face changed instantly.

The color drained from her cheeks.

"Michael?""

Tyler frowned.

"Who is Michael?""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Tyler, we need to leave.""

May you like

But the man in the navy suit was already walking toward us.

And he wasn't smiling.
