Chapter 2: The Man Who Knew Her Secret

The tall man stopped a few feet from Vanessa.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he looked at her wedding ring.

"Interesting," he said quietly.

"You still wear it.""

Vanessa pulled her hand behind her back.

"Michael, this isn't what you think.""

He gave a short, humorless laugh.

"That's exactly what you said when I found your hotel receipts.""

Tyler looked between them.

"Wait. You're married?""

Vanessa snapped her head toward him.

"Don't start.""

Michael extended his hand toward Tyler.

"Michael Bennett. I'm Vanessa's husband.""

Tyler stared at the offered hand without taking it.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"You told me you were divorced.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"Tyler, shut up.""

Michael lowered his hand.

"Apparently, she also told you that she was traveling as a private guest aboard the Ocean Majesty.""

Tyler's jaw tightened.

"She was.""

"No," Michael replied.

"She wasn't.""

The second woman stepped forward and opened the leather folder.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a serious expression.

"Mr. Mitchell, my name is Rachel Collins. I'm the company's compliance attorney.""

Tyler immediately straightened.

"Is there a problem?""

Rachel glanced at Michael.

"Several.""

Vanessa grabbed Tyler's wrist.

"We should go. Right now.""

Michael didn't move.

"You're welcome to leave, Vanessa. But Tyler needs to hear why I've been waiting for this ship to dock.""

He opened the folder.

The first document was a passenger manifest.

The second was a crew-access authorization.

The third was a financial report.

Rachel placed them on a nearby table.

"Mr. Mitchell, can you explain why Vanessa Bennett's security credentials were issued under your employee authorization?""

Tyler blinked.

"That's impossible.""

Rachel pointed to a signature.

"Your employee identification number is here.""

"I didn't issue anything.""

Michael folded his arms.

"Then why does the system show your credentials approving her access?""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Michael, you promised this wouldn't become public.""

"I promised nothing of the sort.""

Tyler turned toward her.

"What access?""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"Tyler, don't say another word.""

Rachel opened another page.

"According to our records, Ms. Bennett had access to restricted financial offices on three separate occasions.""

Tyler shook his head.

"She told me she was helping with guest relations.""

Michael's expression darkened.

"She's never worked for the cruise company.""

I felt Piper shift against my chest.

I looked at the documents.

"What exactly are you saying happened?""

Michael turned toward me.

"Mrs. Mitchell, I apologize. I didn't intend to involve you in this at the terminal.""

He paused.

"But your husband is part of an investigation involving approximately $240,000 in redirected passenger refunds.""

My stomach dropped.

Tyler stepped backward.

"That's ridiculous. I didn't steal anything!""

Rachel removed a bank statement.

"Several transactions were routed through an account connected to a company registered under your name.""

Tyler shook his head violently.

"I don't own a company.""

Michael placed another document beside it.

"Mitchell Maritime Consulting LLC. Registered four months ago.""

I stared at my husband.

"Tyler, what is that?""

He looked at me.

"Emily, I swear, I don't know.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"He's lying.""

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked directly at Tyler.

"You knew exactly what you were doing.""

Tyler's face turned red.

"Don't you dare put this on me!""

Michael raised one hand.

"Enough.""

He removed a photograph from the folder.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

I recognized the hospital.

It was in Fort Lauderdale.

Rachel placed a birth certificate beside the photograph.

"There's another matter.""

Tyler stared at the document.

His lips parted.

"What is that?""

Rachel spoke carefully.

"A birth certificate filed six months ago.""

Michael looked at Vanessa.

"Would you like to explain it, or should I?""

Vanessa lunged for the document.

Michael moved it out of reach.

"Don't.""

Tyler leaned forward.

Then I watched the blood drain from his face.

The father's name was printed clearly.

Tyler Mitchell.

I felt my knees weaken.

"No.""

Tyler shook his head.

"That's not mine.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but they weren't tears of shame.

They were tears of anger.

"Michael, you had no right to bring that here!""

I looked at her.

"Is that your baby?""

She didn't answer.

Tyler turned toward her.

"Vanessa, tell me what's going on.""

She wiped her cheek.

"It's complicated.""

"Complicated?""

His voice cracked.

"You told me you couldn't have children!""

Vanessa looked away.

Michael closed his eyes briefly.

Then he spoke.

"That's not even the worst part.""

Rachel pulled out another document.

It was a life insurance application.

I noticed the amount first.

Three million dollars.

Then I saw the insured person's name.

Tyler Mitchell.

The beneficiary was Vanessa Bennett.

I looked at my husband.

"Tyler, when did you sign this?""

He stared at the page.

"I never did.""

Michael pointed to the signature.

"Then somebody forged it.""

Vanessa's phone began ringing.

She glanced at the screen and immediately rejected the call.

But not before I saw the name.

Margaret Mitchell.

Tyler's mother.

My mother-in-law.

The woman who had called me two days earlier and insisted I shouldn't visit the terminal.

The woman who had told me Tyler needed rest after five months at sea.

I slowly turned toward my husband.

"Why is your mother calling Vanessa?""

Tyler looked confused.

"I don't know.""

Michael gave a cold smile.

"I think we're about to find out.""

Then he turned to Rachel.

"Show her the final document.""

Rachel hesitated.

"Are you sure?""

Michael nodded.

She opened the folder and removed a signed authorization form.

At the top were two names.

Piper Mitchell.

Poppy Mitchell.

My daughters.

Below their names was a request for international travel documents.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

The form included permission for the twins to travel outside the United States without their mother.

And the signature authorizing it belonged to Margaret Mitchell.

My mother-in-law.

I stared at the page.

"Why would she need permission to take my babies anywhere?""

Rachel looked directly at me.

"Because someone submitted an application to obtain travel documents for both children.""

I shook my head.

"I never signed this.""

"I know," Rachel replied.

"That's why we're concerned.""

Then Michael said something that made my blood run cold.

"Emily, the application wasn't submitted yesterday.""

May you like

He turned the page.

"It was submitted before your daughters were even born.""
