Chapter 13: The Midnight Warehouse

"Nobody is taking my children.""

I said it quietly, but everyone in the room heard me.

Michael took the photograph from my hands and passed it to the police commander.

"We have a potential hostage situation and an explosive threat. I want the bomb squad notified immediately.""

The commander nodded.

"Units are already moving toward the waterfront.""

Lauren was shaking so badly that Rachel had to help her sit down.

"That's my little girl," she whispered.

"She's only four. She doesn't understand any of this.""

Tyler stood beside her.

"We're going to bring Sophie home.""

Lauren looked up at him.

"You promise?""

Tyler swallowed.

"I promise.""

I watched him for a moment.

This was the first time I'd seen him act like a father without someone reminding him what that meant.

But I couldn't forget Piper and Poppy.

Margaret had specifically demanded that I bring the twins.

"Michael," I said, "why does she want my daughters at the warehouse?""

He studied the photograph.

"She probably believes the children are her leverage. She wants the trust documents, and she wants everyone afraid enough to cooperate.""

Rachel shook her head.

"There's another possibility.""

She opened her laptop and pulled up the original trust agreement.

"The midnight deadline isn't just about Tyler's birthday. The amendment becomes effective when the beneficiary reaches thirty-five. Margaret loses her discretionary authority.""

Tyler frowned.

"Meaning?""

"Meaning that if the original amendment is valid, the trust transfers to an independent administrator tomorrow. Margaret loses access to the accounts she's been controlling.""

Michael looked at the clock.

"She has less than two hours.""

Rachel nodded.

"Which explains the urgency.""

Tyler paced across the room.

"Then let's get the documents and end this.""

Michael stopped him.

"We don't negotiate with someone threatening children without law enforcement controlling the operation.""

I looked at Lauren.

"Do you have another copy of the recording?""

She nodded.

"On my phone and in my email.""

Rachel immediately secured both copies.

Then she turned toward Michael.

"We should make sure the investigators have the complete financial trail. If Margaret believes the original trust amendment is the only evidence against her, she's mistaken.""

I looked at my daughters.

Poppy was asleep.

Piper was watching me.

I touched her cheek.

"You're going to be okay, sweetheart.""

Then the police commander approached.

"Mrs. Mitchell, we've established contact with someone inside the warehouse.""

My heart stopped.

"Margaret?""

"No. A security contractor.""

"Daniel?""

He nodded.

"He's demanding that you personally deliver the documents.""

Michael shook his head.

"That's not happening.""

The commander continued.

"He also says the children are safe, but he won't allow anyone inside until Margaret gives permission.""

Lauren jumped up.

"Please. Just get Sophie out!""

The commander raised his hand.

"We're working on that.""

Then a message arrived on my phone.

A video.

I pressed play.

Margaret appeared in a dimly lit room, wearing the pearl necklace she'd received from my father-in-law on their twenty-fifth anniversary.

She looked perfectly composed.

"Emily, I hope you've made a sensible decision.""

She turned the camera.

Sophie sat on a chair beside a wooden table.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

Then Margaret spoke again.

"Bring the twins. Bring the trust papers. And remember, Tyler has until midnight to become the man his father intended him to be.""

The video ended.

Tyler looked furious.

"She's threatening my daughters!""

Michael took my phone.

"She's trying to provoke us.""

The commander stepped closer.

"We have a plan. We'll use the time she's given us to establish a safe approach and get the children out.""

Rachel opened her briefcase.

"There's something else. The envelope recovered from Emily's nursery was finally examined.""

She removed a sealed evidence sleeve.

Inside was a small memory card.

"Investigators have recovered the files. One appears to be a scanned copy of the original trust amendment.""

Tyler leaned forward.

"What's on it?""

Rachel opened a document.

Then she smiled faintly.

"Your father amended the trust three weeks before he died.""

She turned the laptop around.

The document stated that the eighteen-million-dollar estate would be divided equally among Tyler's legally recognized biological children.

But there was another provision.

If Tyler's death resulted from intentional criminal conduct by a trustee or anyone acting on that trustee's instructions, that individual would immediately lose all authority over the estate.

Michael read the paragraph twice.

"Your father anticipated this possibility.""

Tyler looked stunned.

"He knew Mom might try something?""

Rachel nodded.

"He apparently had serious concerns about financial irregularities.""

Then she pointed to the final signature.

It belonged to an independent attorney.

A woman named Eleanor Price.

Rachel looked at Michael.

"She's still alive. And she's listed as the witness to the amendment.""

The commander received another radio message.

He listened carefully.

Then looked toward us.

"We've located the warehouse's second entrance.""

Michael stood.

"Good.""

But before anyone could move, my phone rang.

Margaret.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Emily, are you coming?""

"I'm bringing the documents.""

"Good girl.""

I swallowed my anger.

"Why are you doing this?""

Margaret sighed.

"Because you never understood what this family required of you.""

I looked at Tyler.

"Your son almost died.""

"Tyler is weak. He always has been.""

"He has children.""

"And I intend to protect them.""

I closed my eyes.

"By threatening them?""

Margaret's voice turned icy.

"At midnight, everything changes. You have thirty minutes to make the right choice.""

Then she hung up.

The commander checked his watch.

"We're moving.""

Michael turned toward me.

"Stay with Rachel and the babies.""

I nodded.

But as the officers prepared to leave, Tyler approached me.

"Emily, I know I don't deserve anything from you.""

I looked at him.

"Then don't ask.""

He nodded.

"I'm going to bring Sophie home.""

I wanted to tell him to be careful.

Instead, I said, "Bring her home because she's your daughter. Not because you think it will make me forgive you.""

He lowered his eyes.

Then he followed Michael toward the exit.

I watched the door close.

And for the first time that night, I allowed myself to cry.

May you like

Because somewhere in that warehouse, three children were caught in a war they hadn't chosen.

And the woman responsible was the grandmother who had once kissed my pregnant belly and promised to love my babies forever.
