Chapter 14: The Woman Behind the Inheritance
At 11:38 p.m., the first explosion shook the waterfront.
Rachel pulled me away from the window.
"Get down!""
I covered Piper and Poppy with my body as the security office trembled.
An officer rushed inside.
"Everyone stay back!""
My heart hammered.
"Was that the warehouse?""
He nodded.
"An explosive device detonated outside the building. The bomb squad is checking for additional devices.""
I grabbed my phone.
"Michael!""
No answer.
I tried Tyler.
Nothing.
Lauren began pacing.
"Please, God. Please don't let anything happen to Sophie.""
I held Piper tighter.
The baby started crying.
"Shh, sweetheart. Mommy's here.""
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Michael.
We're inside. Sophie is safe. Margaret is still refusing to surrender.
I nearly collapsed with relief.
"She's safe," I whispered.
Lauren covered her mouth.
"Thank you.""
But the message continued.
Daniel has been detained. Margaret is in the main office with Tyler.
I looked at Rachel.
"Why is Tyler with her?""
Rachel frowned.
"He may be trying to get her to surrender.""
Another message arrived.
Margaret wants to speak to Emily.
I shook my head.
"Absolutely not.""
Rachel took my phone.
"Don't respond. The officers are handling this.""
But then a call came through.
Michael.
I answered.
"Michael?""
His voice was strained.
"Emily, listen carefully. Margaret has something you need to know.""
"What?""
"Your father-in-law didn't die of natural causes.""
I stopped breathing.
"What are you saying?""
Michael continued.
"Tyler's father had been investigating missing money from the trust. He discovered that Margaret had been transferring funds into private accounts.""
I looked at Rachel.
She had gone completely still.
"Did she kill him?""
"We don't know. But she was present during his final hours, and the medical records were altered.""
My knees weakened.
"Michael, what happened to Tyler's father?""
"Margaret says he changed the trust because he was mentally unstable. But Eleanor Price has just arrived.""
"The attorney?""
"Yes. She has the original medical correspondence and the signed amendment.""
Rachel immediately stood.
"Put him on speaker.""
I did.
Michael continued.
"Eleanor has confirmed that Tyler's father contacted her two days before his death. He told her he was afraid someone was trying to poison him.""
Lauren began crying again.
Then I heard another voice in the background.
Margaret.
"That is enough, Michael!""
Michael lowered his voice.
"Emily, she's listening.""
I heard Tyler speak.
"Mom, did you hurt Dad?""
A long silence followed.
Then Margaret answered.
"Your father destroyed this family.""
Tyler's voice cracked.
"He was my father.""
"He was a fool. He gave everything away to a woman who didn't deserve it.""
I heard a chair scrape.
Then Margaret continued.
"I sacrificed everything for this family. I raised you alone while your father spent his life treating me like a servant.""
Tyler answered quietly.
"You could have told me.""
"And what would you have done? Chosen Emily? Chosen those babies?""
"Yes.""
Margaret laughed.
"Then you would have lost everything.""
I heard Tyler take a breath.
"I would rather have my family than eighteen million dollars.""
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Margaret said something that made my blood run cold.
"That's exactly why your father changed the trust. He knew you were becoming just like him.""
I heard Michael interrupt.
"Margaret, step away from the desk.""
She ignored him.
"You want the truth, Tyler? Your father didn't die because of his heart condition.""
Tyler's voice became barely audible.
"What?""
"He discovered the withdrawals. He threatened to send me to prison. I couldn't let him destroy everything.""
A terrible silence followed.
Then Tyler asked:
"What did you do?""
Margaret began crying.
"I gave him something to help him sleep.""
Michael immediately spoke.
"Margaret, don't say another word.""
But she continued.
"One tablet. That's all. He was already sick. I never thought...""
Her voice broke.
I felt sick.
Rachel covered her mouth.
The police had recorded the entire conversation.
Then Margaret screamed.
"You think you're better than me? All of you? Emily, you took my son away.
You gave him children who would inherit everything. You ruined my life!""
I heard a loud crash.
Michael shouted.
"Hands where I can see them!""
Then the call disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
"Michael?""
Nothing.
"Tyler?""
Still nothing.
Lauren was crying openly now.
Then the office door opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
"Mrs. Mitchell?""
I stood.
"Yes?""
"Your husband is safe. Margaret Mitchell has been taken into custody.""
I covered my mouth.
"And Sophie?""
The officer smiled faintly.
"She's with her father.""
Lauren began sobbing with relief.
I looked down at my daughters.
They were finally safe.
But I wasn't finished.
"Can I speak to Tyler?""
The officer nodded.
A few minutes later, my husband appeared in the doorway.
His shirt was torn.
There was a small cut above his eyebrow.
But he was alive.
Behind him stood Lauren, holding Sophie.
The little girl looked at Tyler.
Then she whispered:
"Daddy?""
Tyler dropped to his knees.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
She took a hesitant step forward.
"Are you really my daddy?""
He began crying.
"Yes. And I'm so sorry I wasn't there.""
Sophie studied his face.
Then she wrapped her tiny arms around his neck.
I turned away, giving them a moment.
Michael approached me.
"Emily, there's one final matter.""
I looked at him.
"What now?""
He held out a document.
"Eleanor Price reviewed the trust amendment. Your father-in-law left a separate provision for you.""
I frowned.
"For me?""
Michael nodded.
"Not for Tyler. Not for Margaret. For you.""
I took the document.
My name was printed across the top.
Emily Mitchell.
Underneath was a sentence that made my hands tremble.
In recognition of the protection and stability Emily Mitchell will provide to my grandchildren, she is appointed independent guardian of their inherited interests, subject to court confirmation.
I looked at Michael.
"Why would he do that?""
He smiled sadly.
"Because he knew you were the one person in this family who would put the children before the money.""
For the first time that night, I felt something other than fear.
I felt hope.
Then Rachel approached with her laptop.
"Eleanor found another document in the original trust file.""
"What is it?""
She turned the screen toward me.
It was a handwritten letter from my father-in-law.
May you like
And the first sentence read:
Emily, if you're reading this, then Margaret has finally shown you who she really is.
