Chapter 9: The Family Member Who Betrayed Us
I stared at the invoice until the words blurred.
The name at the top of the page felt impossible.
My brother.
Nathan.
For several minutes, I couldn’t move.
Nathan and I had built everything together.
When our father became sick years ago, Nathan was the one who helped me manage the plantation.
When I needed advice, he was the first person I called.
He wasn’t just my brother.
He was my closest friend.
I immediately called him.
He answered after two rings.
“Hey, brother.””
His voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
“Nathan, we need to talk.””
A pause.
“Is everything okay?””
“No.””
The silence on the other end told me he already knew.
“Where are you?””
“Home.””
“I’ll come over.””
“No.””
The word came out quickly.
Too quickly.
“Why not?””
“Because I want to ask you something first.””
Another pause.
“What?””
“Do you know Daniel Brooks?””
The silence was longer this time.
“I’ve heard the name.””
“Have you worked with him?””
“No.””
I looked at the invoice.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
The answer came too fast.
I closed my eyes.
“Nathan.””
“What?””
“I found a payment.””
Silence.
“A payment connected to Daniel.””
His breathing changed.
“Listen to me—”
“Why was he paid?””
“Where did you get that?””
“That’s not the question.””
He didn’t answer.
I felt something break inside me.
“Was it you?””
“Nobody wanted this to happen.””
That was not a denial.
“Nathan.””
“I was trying to protect what Dad built.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No. Explain.””
He sighed.
“You changed after you became successful.””
The words shocked me.
“Excuse me?””
“You started making decisions alone. The plantation. The investments. Everything.””
“I included you.””
“You included me when you needed help.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
I stood in my living room, holding the phone tightly.
My own brother was saying the same thing Clara had said.
That I had forgotten them.
That I had abandoned them.
Except I knew that wasn’t true.
Because I had spent years trying to give everyone a better life.
“Nathan, did you help Daniel get close to Clara?””
Silence.
That silence was enough.
“You did.””
“I didn’t know what he was going to do.””
“But you introduced them.””
“I thought he could help.””
“Help with what?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“With getting control back.””
I felt numb.
“Control back from who?””
“From you.””
I sat down.
My brother.
The person I trusted most.
Had been working against me.
“Why?””
His voice became emotional.
“Because I was tired of watching you give everything away.””
I looked toward the window.
The Toyota Yaris was parked outside.
The car that started this.
The car that revealed everything.
“Nathan, I bought a car for our parents.””
“I know.””
“And that bothered you?””
“No.””
“Then what did?””
He didn’t answer.
Finally, he whispered:
“The inheritance.””
My heart stopped.
“What inheritance?””
A long silence followed.
Then Nathan said:
“The one Dad left you.””
I frowned.
“Dad didn’t leave me anything.””
Nathan’s voice dropped.
“That’s what you believe.””
I stood up.
“What are you talking about?””
Before he could answer, someone knocked on my front door.
I looked toward it.
“Nathan, stay on the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because someone is here.””
I walked toward the door.
When I opened it, I froze.
Standing outside was my mother.
She looked nervous.
In her hand was an old envelope.
“Mom?””
She looked past me into the house.
Then she whispered:
“It’s time you knew why your father left everything to you.””
I stared at the envelope.
May you like
Because suddenly, the biggest secret in my family had nothing to do with money.
It was about a promise my father made before he died.
