Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Plan

The word echoed in my head.

“Yours.””

My lawyer’s voice continued through the phone.

“The access was made using your account credentials.””

I looked at Clara.

She looked terrified.

“I didn’t do that.””

“I believe you,” I said.

But the question remained.

If Clara didn’t access the files…

Who did?

My lawyer continued.

“We need to check every device connected to your accounts.””

“Do it.””

After the call ended, nobody spoke.

The room felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was waiting for someone to be accused.

But I didn’t want another accusation.

I wanted the truth.

I looked at Clara.

“Who has access to your computer?””

She thought.

“Nobody.””

“Think carefully.””

She closed her eyes.

“Sometimes Michael used it.””

My stomach tightened.

“Michael?””

“Yes. When he helped me organize documents.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

I looked at Nathan.

He looked shocked.

“Michael?””

My brother repeated the name.

“You never told me he was involved.””

“I didn’t know he was involved.””

The pieces started moving.

Michael.

Daniel.

Nathan.

Clara.

Everyone connected.

But the question was why.

That afternoon, we met with my lawyer again.

He had recovered more information.

“The login happened from a different location.””

“Where?””

He turned his laptop around.

A map appeared.

A small office building.

I recognized it immediately.

“MB Consulting.””

My lawyer nodded.

“Michael’s company.””

Clara covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You trusted him too?””

She looked devastated.

“He was my cousin.””

“Exactly.””

Family was supposed to be the safest place.

But somehow, it had become where the danger came from.

We drove to Michael’s office.

This time, we weren’t asking.

We were confronting.

The receptionist recognized Clara.

“He’s expecting you.””

I stopped.

“Expecting?””

She looked nervous.

“He said you would come eventually.””

Of course.

Everyone knew more than us.

Michael opened the door.

He looked at the three of us.

Me.

Clara.

Nathan.

And he smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A defeated one.

“I suppose it’s over.””

Clara stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Michael sighed.

“I tried to fix things.””

“Fix what?””

He looked at me.

“The imbalance.””

I stared at him.

“You helped destroy my marriage because you thought my life was unfair?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

He looked at Nathan.

Then Clara.

“Because you both were unhappy.””

I laughed.

“You created a disaster because you decided you knew what was best for everyone?””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He sat down.

“Everyone sees you as the person who has everything.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

He pointed at me.

“You have the land. The money. The respect.””

Then he looked at Clara.

“She felt invisible.””

Then Nathan.

“He felt forgotten.””

I stared at him.

“So you manipulated them.””

“I gave them options.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You gave them reasons to distrust me.””

Michael didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

We all knew.

Then Clara noticed something on his desk.

A folder.

She walked closer.

“What is that?””

Michael reached for it.

Too late.

She opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Messages.

Plans.

And a list of names.

At the top was one sentence.

“Final transfer strategy.””

Clara turned the page.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What did you find?””

She looked at me.

Her voice barely came out.

“It wasn’t just about the plantation.””

I took the papers.

The final page contained one name.

The person who approved the entire plan.

The person who had been funding Daniel and Michael.

The person who had been moving everything from behind the scenes.

I read the name.

And my blood went cold.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted more than anyone.

May you like

Someone who had been standing beside me the entire time.

My mother.
