Chapter 8: The Person Pulling the Strings
The next morning, Clara and I sat in my lawyer’s office.
Together.
For the first time in days, we were on the same side of the table.
Not husband and wife.
Not yet.
Just two people trying to understand how everything had gone wrong.
My lawyer placed the documents in front of us.
“This power of attorney was submitted as part of an information request,” he explained.
Clara looked confused.
“I didn’t submit this.””
“I believe you.””
She looked surprised.
“You believe me?””
He nodded.
“Yes. The signature appears to be copied.””
I looked at the document.
“So someone created this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My lawyer leaned back.
“To gain access to confidential business information.””
The room became quiet.
Clara whispered:
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“You think he did this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That sentence said everything.
The confidence she once had in him was gone.
My lawyer continued.
“Who introduced you to Daniel?””
Clara looked down.
“My cousin Michael.””
I immediately felt something was wrong.
“Your cousin introduced you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“About six months ago.””
“Right before the problems started.””
She nodded.
My lawyer exchanged a look with me.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Your cousin’s name appears in another document.””
“What document?””
He slid a paper across the table.
A company registration.
I read the name.
“MB Consulting.””
I looked at Clara.
“Michael’s company?””
She nodded slowly.
“He never told me.””
My lawyer pointed to the document.
“Daniel Brooks is listed as a consultant.””
The pieces started connecting.
Michael introduced Clara to Daniel.
Daniel convinced Clara she needed protection.
Someone created fake documents.
Someone tried to access my business records.
And somehow, my own marriage had become the perfect doorway.
On the drive home, Clara didn’t say a word.
Neither did I.
The silence between us was painful.
But different.
Before, it was full of anger.
Now, it was full of truth.
When we arrived home, Clara stopped me before I entered.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
She looked nothing like the woman who had stood in the driveway shouting about the Toyota Yaris.
“I should have trusted you.””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.
“I need time.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
That night, I received another message.
Unknown number.
One photo.
It showed Michael leaving Daniel’s office.
The date was yesterday.
The caption below said:
“Your wife was never the target.””
My heart started racing.
I immediately called the number.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
“You’re looking in the wrong direction.””
I stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
“The person who started this is someone you would never suspect.””
I looked around the house.
At the walls.
The pictures.
The memories.
Everything we had built.
Someone close to us had been planning this.
But who?
The next morning, I went through old records.
Emails.
Business files.
Messages.
Anything that could explain what was happening.
And then I found something.
A payment.
A transfer from six months earlier.
The receiver’s name was hidden under a company account.
But the description was clear.
“Consulting fee.””
I opened the attached invoice.
My hands went cold.
Because the invoice wasn’t addressed to Michael.
It wasn’t addressed to Daniel.
May you like
It was addressed to someone else.
Someone inside my own family.
