Chapter 11: The Betrayal Nobody Expected

I didn’t show the photo immediately.

I needed to think.

For weeks, every answer had created another question.

Every truth had revealed another secret.

And now I was exhausted from chasing people who kept hiding behind explanations.

“Nathan,” I said.

“Yes?””

“Are you still working with Daniel?””

The silence returned.

A painful, familiar silence.

“Nathan.””

“I can explain.””

My jaw tightened.

“Everyone always says that after they’ve been caught.””

“It’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He didn’t answer.

My mother looked at me.

Her expression was filled with disappointment.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

That was worse.

Finally, Nathan spoke.

“I met Daniel yesterday.””

“Why?””

“He contacted me.””

“For what?””

“He said he had information.””

“About what?””

Nathan hesitated.

“About Clara.””

I looked at my wife.

She looked just as confused.

“What information?””

Nathan sighed.

“He said Clara wasn’t only worried about your finances.””

The room became silent.

Clara’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

“Tell me,” I said.

“He said she had another reason for wanting control of the plantation.””

Clara stood up.

“That’s not true.””

“Nathan,” I said, “what did he tell you?””

“He said she was planning to leave.””

Clara froze.

“What?””

Nathan continued.

“He said she wanted financial security before she walked away.””

I looked at my wife.

Her eyes filled with shock.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?”” I asked quietly.

She looked hurt.

“Yes.””

But something about her reaction made me hesitate.

Not because I thought she was guilty.

Because I realized there was still something I didn’t know.

“Clara,” I said, “did you ever consider leaving?””

She looked at me.

Then away.

That small movement was enough.

My heart sank.

“You did.””

She immediately shook her head.

“Not like that.””

“Then explain.””

She sat down.

“I thought about it.””

Nobody spoke.

“When?””

“Before the car.””

I closed my eyes.

The answer hurt.

“How long?””

“A few weeks.””

“Why?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because I felt like I didn’t matter.””

I looked at her.

“You had everything.””

“That’s not what I mean.””

“Then what?””

She wiped her eyes.

“I had things. But I didn’t feel like I had you.””

The words surprised me.

Not because they excused what she did.

They didn’t.

But because they revealed something I had ignored.

I had been providing.

But maybe I had stopped listening.

“I should have told you,” she said.

“Yes.””

“I should never have gone to Daniel.””

“No.””

“I should have trusted you.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Nathan interrupted.

“Daniel knew.””

We both looked at him.

“What?””

“He knew she was thinking about leaving.””

“How?””

“He told me.””

“Why would he know?””

Nathan went quiet.

Then he said:

“Because he was the one she talked to first.””

Clara looked horrified.

“No.””

Nathan continued.

“He said he helped her decide what to do.””

I looked at Clara.

“Is that true?””

She shook her head.

“I talked to him once.””

“About leaving?””

“Yes.””

The truth landed heavily.

“But I never planned to betray you.””

I looked away.

Because my heart was fighting with my mind.

I loved her.

But love did not erase betrayal.

Then my lawyer called.

I answered.

“Yes?””

His voice was urgent.

“I found the original source of the fake power of attorney.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“The document was created using information from someone inside your household.””

I looked around.

My house.

My family.

My life.

“Who?””

My lawyer lowered his voice.

“The information came from Clara’s personal computer.””

I looked at my wife.

She went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

“Someone accessed your files,” my lawyer said.

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then he answered.

“We traced the login.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Whose account was used?””

The answer came.

May you like

And nobody in the room was prepared for it.

“Yours.””
