Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

The room went silent after my lawyer’s words.

“The ones transferring control of the plantation.””

I looked at Clara.

For the first time since our argument began, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“Clara,” I said slowly, “what is he talking about?””

She didn’t answer.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the couch.

“Tell me,” I repeated.

She stood up.

“I can explain.””

I almost laughed because that sentence had become the beginning of every painful conversation.

“I hope you can.””

She walked toward the window, turning her back to me.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“Protect yourself from what?””

“From a future where I have nothing.””

I stared at her.

“Nothing?””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“Clara, you have a house. You have a Mercedes. You have land. You have money.””

She turned around.

“That’s not the same.””

“What do you mean?””

“I mean everything is in your name.””

I looked at her in disbelief.

“Because I built it.””

“And because you could take it away.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“Have I ever threatened to do that?””

She looked down.

“No.””

“Have I ever controlled your spending?””

“No.””

“Have I ever told you that anything I gave you wasn’t yours?””

She stayed silent.

That silence was an answer.

I grabbed my phone and called my lawyer back.

“Can you explain what documents you’re referring to?””

My lawyer hesitated.

“I received copies from the land office. They show an attempt to transfer management rights of the plantation.””

“An attempt?””

“Yes. The transfer wasn’t completed.””

I looked at Clara.

“Who helped you do this?””

She closed her eyes.

“I can’t believe this is happening.””

“No,” I said.

“I can’t believe this is happening.””

My lawyer continued.

“The documents were prepared by someone named Daniel Brooks.””

The name.

Again.

Daniel.

I ended the call.

“Your coworker?””

Clara didn’t respond.

“Or is he something else?””

She sat down slowly.

“He’s a financial advisor.””

“A financial advisor who prepares documents behind my back?””

“He was helping me understand my rights.””

“Your rights?””

My frustration finally broke through.

“Clara, you are my wife. If you wanted security, you could have talked to me.””

“You would have said no.””

I froze.

“Why do you think that?””

“Because you always choose everyone else first.””

I shook my head.

“No. Because I would have asked why.””

She looked away.

I walked closer.

“Do you know what hurts the most?””

She looked at me.

“It’s not the documents.””

Her expression changed.

“It’s that you believed I was the kind of man who would leave you with nothing.””

For a moment, her eyes softened.

But then she whispered:

“People change.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes. They do.””

That night, I slept in the guest room.

Not because I wanted to punish her.

Because I didn’t know how to lie beside someone who had been secretly preparing for a war against me.

The next morning, I went to check on my parents’ new car.

My father was outside cleaning the windshield.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Your mother says this car feels like a luxury vehicle.””

I forced a smile.

“I’m glad.””

He noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

I looked at the small Toyota Yaris.

A simple gift.

A symbol of gratitude.

And somehow, the thing that revealed the truth about my marriage.

“Dad,” I said, “did I make a mistake?””

He put down the cloth in his hand.

“What kind of mistake?””

“Taking care of you.””

His face changed.

He walked closer.

“Never say that.””

“But my marriage is falling apart because of it.””

My father shook his head.

“Son, a person who truly loves you won’t ask you to erase the people who loved you before they arrived.””

I looked away.

Those words stayed with me.

But when I returned home that afternoon, I found Clara standing in the driveway.

She was holding a letter.

And the look on her face told me something had happened.

“What is that?”” I asked.

She swallowed.

“It’s from Daniel.””

My chest tightened.

“What does he want?””

She looked at the letter.

May you like

Then at me.

“He says he can prove you’ve been hiding money from me for years.””
