Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Her Anger

The name “Daniel” stayed between us like a crack spreading through glass.

Clara didn’t move.

She didn’t deny it.

She didn’t explain.

She simply stared at me.

And somehow, that silence hurt more than any confession could have.

“Who is Daniel?”” I asked again.

My voice was calm, but inside, everything was shaking.

Clara reached for her phone.

“It’s not what you think.””

I let out a quiet breath.

“That’s what people say when it’s exactly what someone thinks.””

She looked frustrated.

“You’re twisting this.””

“I’m asking a simple question.””

“He’s someone from work.””

“Then why did you hide the message?””

She had no answer.

I sat down because my legs suddenly felt heavier.

For twelve years, I had believed I knew my wife.

I knew how she laughed when she was truly happy.

I knew how she became quiet when something bothered her.

I knew how she squeezed my hand whenever she felt nervous.

But that morning, across from me, she felt like a stranger.

“Are you having an affair?”” I asked.

Her eyes filled with anger.

“How could you ask me that?””

“Because you won’t answer.””

She stood up.

“After everything we’ve built, you think I would do something like that?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

That sentence seemed to hurt her.

But then she said something that surprised me.

“You’re the one who changed.””

I stared at her.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

She walked around the kitchen, speaking faster.

“You used to focus on us. You used to make me feel like I was the center of your world.””

“I still do.””

“No, you don’t.””

“Because I bought my parents a car?””

“Because you keep giving pieces of yourself away.””

I shook my head.

“Helping my parents isn’t losing a piece of myself.””

She looked at me with tears forming in her eyes.

“You don’t understand what it feels like.””

“What?””

“To wonder if your husband’s loyalty belongs somewhere else.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“My loyalty?””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“My parents gave me life. You became my wife. Those are two completely different kinds of love.””

She looked away.

“Maybe.””

“No, Clara. Not maybe.””

My voice became firmer.

“You don’t have to love my parents the way I do. But you should respect why they matter to me.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I’m tired of being expected to accept everything.””

“What everything?””

“The money you send them. The time you spend with them. The decisions you make.””

I froze.

Because suddenly I understood.

This was not about one car.

This was about every moment she had watched me care for the people who raised me.

And instead of seeing gratitude, she saw competition.

That evening, I went to my parents’ house.

My mother opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.

“You look tired,” she said.

I smiled weakly.

“I’m okay.””

She touched my arm.

“Don’t lie to your mother.””

I sat at their kitchen table, the same table where I had done homework as a child.

My father came in carrying a cup of tea.

“What happened?””

I looked at the two people who had spent their lives protecting me.

“I bought you the car.””

My mother smiled.

“And we love it.””

I looked down.

“Clara doesn’t.””

Their expressions changed.

My father sighed.

“Son, don’t let us become a reason for problems in your marriage.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t do anything wrong.””

My mother reached across the table.

“Sometimes people aren’t angry about the thing in front of them. Sometimes they are angry about something deeper.””

Her words followed me home.

Because she was right.

When I returned, Clara was waiting in the living room.

The lights were off except for a small lamp beside her.

She looked exhausted.

“I need to tell you something,” she said.

I stood still.

“What?””

She took a deep breath.

“The truth about Daniel.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who is he?””

She looked down at her hands.

“Daniel is…”

Before she finished, my phone rang.

It was my lawyer.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

His voice was serious.

“Are you with Clara right now?””

“Yes. Why?””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“I think you need to look at the documents she signed this morning.””

I turned toward Clara.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“What documents?”” I asked.

May you like

My lawyer lowered his voice.

“The ones transferring control of the plantation.””
