Chapter 4: Tyler’s Secret

Tyler stood in the middle of the living room, frozen.

For the first time since I had known him, he didn’t look like Melissa’s confident son.

He looked like a kid who had been carrying something heavy for too long.

“Tyler,” Melissa said sharply.

He flinched.

That reaction told me more than words ever could.

I stepped between them.

“Tyler, you can talk to me.””

Melissa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous. He’s tired. He doesn’t know what he’s saying.””

But Tyler didn’t move.

He looked at me.

Then at Ava.

Then back at me.

“Can we go somewhere else?””

My wife immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

Her expression tightened.

“Because this is my family too.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes. It is.””

Then I looked at Tyler.

“Kitchen?””

He followed me.

Ava stayed on the couch, holding her stuffed rabbit.

I could see her watching everything.

I wanted to tell her everything would be okay.

But I knew better than to make promises before I understood the truth.

In the kitchen, Tyler sat down.

He kept rubbing his hands together.

“Tyler, whatever you say, I need you to know something.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“You’re not in trouble.””

His eyes became red.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn’t always like this.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

“My mom.””

I leaned against the counter.

“What do you mean?””

Tyler looked toward the living room.

“After you married her, she changed.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Changed how?””

He swallowed.

“At first, she loved Ava.””

That surprised me.

“She did?””

He nodded.

“She used to play with her. She used to read her stories.””

I remembered those early years.

Melissa laughing with Ava.

Taking pictures.

Calling her “my little girl.””

I had wondered when things changed.

Tyler continued.

“Then after a while, she started saying things.””

“What things?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“She said Ava was getting too much attention.””

The room felt colder.

“She said you only cared about Ava.””

I stared at him.

“Did she say that to you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Sometimes after you worked late.””

I closed my eyes.

All those nights I thought I was building a better future.

All those nights Melissa had been filling the silence with something else.

“What happened yesterday?””

Tyler looked down.

“I told her not to do it.””

My head lifted.

“Not to do what?””

“Put Ava outside.””

The words landed like a punch.

“You knew?””

Tyler nodded.

“I saw her.””

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

His face changed.

Guilt.

“I tried.””

I waited.

He continued quietly.

“She told me to go upstairs.””

“Tyler.””

“She said Ava needed discipline.””

I looked toward the living room.

My daughter.

My wife.

My stepson.

Three people living under the same roof.

And somehow, I had been the last person to know what was happening.

“Why tell me now?””

Tyler’s voice cracked.

“Because when Ava ran to you yesterday, I saw her face.””

He wiped his eyes quickly.

“She looked at you like you were the only safe person in the world.””

I didn’t say anything.

Because he was right.

“And I realized,” Tyler continued, “that I was becoming someone I didn’t want to be.””

I sat down across from him.

“Tyler, why didn’t you tell me before?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because she’s my mom.””

That answer was the most honest thing he could have given.

Family was complicated.

Even when someone was doing something wrong, love didn’t disappear instantly.

People got trapped between loyalty and truth.

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Thank you for telling me.””

He nodded.

Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What more?””

Tyler looked toward the living room.

“She has been planning something.””

My stomach tightened.

“Planning what?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“She thinks if Ava wasn’t here, you would finally focus on her and me.””

Before I could respond, we heard something crash.

We both turned.

Melissa was standing in the kitchen doorway.

Her face was pale.

She had heard everything.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Melissa slowly said:

“Tyler.””

Her voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

And Tyler immediately looked afraid.

That was when I realized something.

Whatever Melissa had been hiding from me…

Tyler had only told me the beginning.
