Chapter 11: The Final Conversation

When I arrived home, Melissa was sitting in the living room.

The lights were off.

Only the television illuminated the room.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

Ava was upstairs.

Tyler was gone.

It was just us.

“You met Daniel,” she said.

Not a question.

I placed my keys on the table.

“Yes.””

Her expression didn’t change.

“And?””

“And he told me the truth.””

Melissa laughed softly.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

She stood.

“You really believe him?””

I looked at her.

“I believe patterns.””

That made her pause.

“What does that mean?””

“It means this isn’t the first time.””

Her face became colder.

“Daniel poisoned you against me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You did that yourself.””

For the first time, her confidence slipped.

I continued.

“I found the notebook.””

Silence.

“I found the messages.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“What messages?””

I watched her reaction.

She knew exactly what I meant.

“I know about Daniel.””

Melissa looked away.

Then she smiled.

A small, tired smile.

“You went through everything.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I finally looked.””

She sat back down.

“You don’t understand what it’s like.””

“Then explain.””

She stared at the floor.

“I had a life before you.””

“Yes.””

“And then I married you.””

I waited.

“And everything became about Ava.””

There it was.

The truth she had been hiding.

Not anger.

Not discipline.

Resentment.

“You resented my daughter.””

Melissa looked at me.

“She changed everything.””

“She was a child.””

“She was always there.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“She was your stepdaughter.””

“No.””

Melissa shook her head.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“I never felt like she was mine.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you pretend?””

Her face changed.

Because she didn’t have an answer.

“You should have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“Little things.””

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“You didn’t talk about your feelings. You punished a child.””

Melissa stood quickly.

“I was overwhelmed!””

“And Ava paid the price.””

“She was difficult!””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She needed love.””

The room went silent.

Then Melissa said something I never expected.

“I wanted you to choose.””

I frowned.

“Choose what?””

“Me.””

I stared at her.

“You wanted me to choose between my wife and my daughter?””

She didn’t answer.

Because that was exactly what she wanted.

I felt something inside me break.

Not love.

Trust.

“You should have asked me for help.””

“I did.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You asked me to abandon my daughter.””

Melissa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re making me the villain.””

I looked at her.

“I’m talking about your actions.””

She wiped her face.

“You think you’re protecting Ava.””

“I am.””

“You don’t know everything.””

I paused.

“What does that mean?””

Melissa looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“There’s a reason Ava was acting differently.””

My stomach tightened.

“What reason?””

She reached for her phone.

“I have something you need to see.””

I didn’t move.

“No more secrets.””

She smiled sadly.

“You’ll understand.””

She unlocked her phone.

Then stopped.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

“What?””

She looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“Someone deleted it.””

“What?””

“The message.””

“What message?””

Melissa’s hands started shaking.

And for the first time, I realized something.

May you like

She wasn’t the only person hiding things.

Someone else was involved.
