Chapter 12: The Person Behind The Silence
The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.
I barely slept.
Too many questions.
Too many pieces that didn’t fit.
Someone had deleted Melissa’s message.
Someone who had access.
Someone who knew what was happening.
I walked downstairs quietly.
Ava was already awake.
She was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.
When she saw me, she smiled.
A real smile.
Small.
But real.
“Good morning, Daddy.””
“Good morning, sweetheart.””
I made breakfast.
Pancakes.
The kind with too much syrup because Ava always said pancakes tasted better when they were messy.
While she ate, she looked at me.
“Is Mommy leaving?””
The question caught me off guard.
“Why do you ask?””
She shrugged.
“Because she packed a bag.””
I froze.
“When?””
“Last night.””
My heart tightened.
“Did she say anything?””
Ava shook her head.
“She just looked angry.””
I went upstairs.
Melissa’s closet was open.
Several things were missing.
She was preparing.
But for what?
I found Tyler in the driveway later that morning.
He was loading his backpack into his car.
“Tyler.””
He turned.
“Dad.””
“We need to talk.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
I studied his face.
“Did you delete something from Mom’s phone?””
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“Tyler.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because I thought I was protecting Ava.””
I stayed quiet.
“What did you delete?””
He swallowed.
“A message from Mom to someone.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Her sister.””
I frowned.
“Your aunt?””
He nodded.
“What did the message say?””
Tyler looked ashamed.
“She said Ava needed to disappear before things got worse.””
The world seemed to stop.
“Disappear?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
My voice was low.
“I need to know exactly.””
Tyler looked at me.
“She said she was going to send Ava away.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
I looked at him.
“You’re not protecting her anymore.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
That afternoon, I met with my lawyer again.
I brought everything.
The notebook.
The messages.
Daniel’s information.
Tyler’s statement.
The lawyer listened carefully.
Then she looked at me.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“This is no longer just a family disagreement.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“If someone is actively trying to remove a child from a safe parent without proper reason, that changes the situation.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I’m Melissa’s sister.””
I froze.
“Why are you calling me?””
A long pause.
Then she said:
“Because I need to apologize.””
I stood up.
“For what?””
Her voice trembled.
“For helping Melissa.””
My heart started racing.
“What did you help her do?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“I helped her create the story she was going to tell everyone.””
I felt cold.
“What story?””
May you like
She whispered:
“The story where you were the reason Ava couldn’t stay.””
