Chapter 10: The Man Who Knew Before Me
I stared at Daniel across the coffee shop table.
Tyler’s father.
The man I had only met a handful of times.
The man who had always been polite but distant.
Now he was sitting across from me, telling me my wife wasn’t who I thought she was.
I didn’t know whether to trust him.
After all, he was Melissa’s ex-husband.
He had his own history with her.
His own reasons.
“Why are you telling me this?”” I asked.
Daniel looked down at his coffee.
“Because I should have told you sooner.””
That answer surprised me.
“About what?””
He took a slow breath.
“About how Melissa treats people when she wants something.””
I stayed silent.
Daniel looked out the window.
“When we were married, I thought I was the problem.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“She always had a way of making me question myself.””
He looked back at me.
“She would make something happen, then convince me I caused it.””
I thought about the notebook.
The list.
The way Melissa turned every situation into Ava’s fault.
Daniel continued.
“When Tyler was little, she started keeping notes.””
“Notes?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Like the notebook?””
He nodded.
“She wrote down every mistake Tyler made.””
I felt sick.
“She did this before?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because she said she needed proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That he was difficult.””
The same words.
The same pattern.
My hands tightened around my cup.
“So this isn’t new.””
“No.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“It’s a cycle.””
I looked down.
For months, I had thought this was about Ava.
A stepmother struggling with a child.
A difficult adjustment.
But maybe it was something else.
Maybe Ava was just the newest person being targeted.
“What happened between you two?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I left because of Tyler.””
I looked up.
“You left?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His face changed.
Regret.
“I waited too long.””
The words stayed between us.
“What did you see?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I saw my son becoming afraid to make mistakes.””
My chest tightened.
“Like Ava.””
He nodded.
“Exactly like Ava.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel reached into his bag.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I wasn’t sure if I would ever need it.””
“What is it?””
“Records.””
I looked at him.
“Of what?””
“Things Melissa said during our divorce.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why give it to me?””
“Because she’s doing the same thing again.””
The coffee shop suddenly felt too quiet.
“What is she planning?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“She wants control.””
“Control of what?””
“Everything.””
He paused.
“The house. The money. The story.””
I frowned.
“The story?””
Daniel nodded.
“Melissa is very good at making herself look like the victim.””
I thought about her words.
You’re destroying our family.
You’re choosing her.
“You think she’s trying to make me look like the problem?””
“I know she is.””
“How?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because she did it to me.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was my lawyer.
I answered.
“Hello?””
The voice on the other end was serious.
“Mr. Carter, I reviewed the documents you sent.””
“And?””
“There’s something you need to know.””
I stood up.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your wife has been making inquiries about changing custody arrangements.””
My heart stopped.
“Custody?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
He already knew.
“She’s trying to remove Ava from your home.””
I gripped the table.
“How long?””
The lawyer’s voice became quieter.
“According to the records, she started planning this months ago.””
I ended the call.
For months.
While I was working.
While I was trusting her.
While my daughter was quietly begging for help.
Melissa had been preparing to take Ava away from me.
Daniel stood.
“You need to act carefully.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because once Melissa realizes she’s losing control, she won’t admit defeat.””
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a message from Melissa.
Three words.
“We need to talk.””
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
“I know you met Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
May you like
She knew.
And somehow, she knew everything.
