Chapter 13: The Story She Wanted Everyone To Believe

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Melissa’s sister was still on the phone.

Waiting.

I could hear her breathing.

“Mr. Carter?””

I forced myself to answer.

“I’m here.””

“I know this is a lot.””

I looked out the window of my office.

The city moved like nothing had changed.

Cars.

People.

Normal life.

But mine had completely fallen apart.

“What story did she create?”” I asked.

The woman sighed.

“She wanted people to believe you were neglecting Ava.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“She said you worked too much. That Ava was struggling. That you weren’t emotionally available.””

I closed my eyes.

The irony was almost impossible to handle.

I had worked so hard because I wanted to provide for my daughter.

And Melissa had turned that into evidence against me.

“She said she was worried about Ava.””

“Was she?””

The woman went quiet.

“No.””

That one word mattered.

“Why are you telling me now?””

“Because I saw what happened.””

“What happened?””

Her voice became softer.

“The night of the balcony incident.””

I froze.

“You were there?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

“Melissa called me afterward.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She wasn’t crying because Ava was outside.””

I waited.

“She was crying because you found out.””

The words hit hard.

I sat down.

“She was afraid of losing control.””

The woman continued.

“She told me you would always choose Ava if you knew everything.””

I looked at the floor.

That was the part Melissa never understood.

I wasn’t choosing Ava instead of her.

I was choosing to be a father.

“Do you have proof?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What kind?””

“Messages.””

“From Melissa?””

“Yes.””

“Can you send them to me?””

“I will.””

A few minutes later, my phone buzzed.

Screenshots.

Not from a stranger.

From family.

I read every message carefully.

Melissa talking about “building a case.””

Melissa talking about “making him understand.””

Melissa talking about how people would believe her because she was the mother.

My hands shook.

Then I saw one sentence.

“I just need Ava gone long enough for him to realize he can’t do this without me.””

I stared at the screen.

Gone.

Not safe.

Not cared for.

Gone.

That was when I knew.

This wasn’t about a misunderstanding.

It wasn’t about parenting styles.

It was about control.

When I arrived home, Melissa was packing.

A suitcase sat near the door.

She looked at me.

“You talked to my sister.””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You had no right.””

I looked at her.

“You lost the right to hide things when you started planning my daughter’s life without me.””

She became defensive.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“No?””

I held up my phone.

“Then explain this.””

Her face went pale.

For the first time, she had no prepared response.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Ava appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I immediately turned.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.””

Melissa looked up at her.

And something about that moment broke my heart.

Because Ava stepped backward.

Away from her.

A child should never move away from someone because they expect pain.

Melissa saw it too.

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Something else.

Regret.

But it came too late.

“I never wanted this,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“But you created it.””

She sat down.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“You can’t fix hurting a child by pretending it didn’t happen.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Are you leaving me?””

I looked toward Ava.

Then back at Melissa.

“I don’t know what happens to us.””

A tear fell down her face.

“But I know what happens next.””

I walked upstairs.

I took Ava’s hand.

And for the first time in months, she didn’t look afraid.

But the next morning, my lawyer called.

And what she told me changed everything.

Because Melissa had already filed paperwork.

And the hearing was scheduled for one week later.
