Chapter 4: The Video They Thought Would Destroy Me
The courtroom felt colder than the courthouse steps.
Maybe because I knew exactly what was waiting for me inside.
A judge.
A custody battle.
And a video designed to make me look like the monster.
The irony almost made me laugh.
For twelve years, I had been the one making breakfast before sunrise.
The one staying home when Lily was sick.
The one memorizing every little thing about my daughter.
Her favorite cereal.
Her fears.
Her dreams.
And now, in a matter of minutes, I was going to be reduced to one moment.
One slap.
One mistake.
One second captured by a camera.
Mr. Hayes sat beside me as we waited for the emergency hearing to begin.
“Are you okay?”” he asked.
I stared at the courtroom doors.
“No.””
He nodded.
“That’s an honest answer.””
I looked at him.
“I’m scared.””
“You should be,” he said calmly.
“Fear means you understand what’s at stake.””
The doors opened.
“Everyone rise.””
Judge Eleanor Watkins entered the room.
Everyone stood.
Brandon sat across from me with his attorney.
Patricia was behind him.
She looked completely different from the woman on the courthouse steps.
No tears.
No screaming.
Just confidence.
She thought she had won.
The judge reviewed the documents in front of her.
“Mr. Mitchell has filed for emergency custody based on evidence of alleged violence by Mrs. Mitchell.””
My chest tightened.
The attorney representing Brandon stood.
“Your Honor, we are not here to punish a woman for one mistake. We are here because a child’s safety must come first.””
I almost laughed.
A child’s safety.
The phrase sounded noble coming from someone who had never met my daughter.
“Play the video,” the attorney said.
The screen turned on.
And there I was.
Standing outside the courthouse.
My hand moving.
Patricia’s face turning.
The sound echoed through the courtroom.
The attorney paused the video.
“Your Honor, this is not an accident. This is an act of uncontrolled aggression.””
I looked at Patricia.
She watched me with satisfaction.
The attorney continued.
“Mr. Mitchell believes this behavior demonstrates emotional instability and potential danger to their daughter.””
Brandon sat quietly.
That hurt more than anything.
He knew the truth.
He knew why it happened.
But he still allowed them to use it against me.
The judge looked at me.
“Mrs. Mitchell, do you deny striking Mrs. Mitchell?””
I stood.
“No, Your Honor.””
The room became silent.
I continued.
“I did it.””
Brandon’s attorney smiled slightly.
But I wasn’t finished.
“I also regret doing it.””
The smile disappeared.
“However, I ask this court to consider everything that happened before that moment.””
The judge looked at Mr. Hayes.
He stood.
“Your Honor, we are not denying the action. We are challenging the story being presented around it.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“The video begins after an important conversation.””
Brandon’s attorney shook his head.
“Speculation.””
“No,” Mr. Hayes replied.
“Evidence.””
He handed copies to the judge.
“Witness statements from people present at the courthouse.””
The judge looked through the papers.
“Several witnesses claim Mrs. Patricia Mitchell made statements regarding the child.””
Brandon’s expression changed.
Patricia shifted in her seat.
The judge looked up.
“What statements?””
Mr. Hayes opened another file.
“She told Mrs. Mitchell that she would never see her daughter again.””
Patricia immediately spoke.
“That’s ridiculous.””
The judge looked at her.
“Mrs. Mitchell, you will speak when asked.””
Patricia closed her mouth.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
Mr. Hayes continued.
“We also have evidence that Mrs. Patricia Mitchell has been attempting to influence custody proceedings before divorce was finalized.””
Brandon’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, this is a distraction.””
“Is it?”” the judge asked.
The attorney sat down.
Mr. Hayes placed a final document before the judge.
“This is a financial record showing payments made to a private investigator hired by Patricia Mitchell.””
The judge studied the paper.
“And what was the purpose?””
“To gather material against my client.””
Brandon looked at his mother.
“You hired someone to spy on her?””
Patricia didn’t answer.
The judge looked between them.
“This hearing is becoming more complicated than an emergency custody request based on a single incident.””
I felt a small amount of relief.
Then Brandon’s attorney stood again.
“Your Honor, regardless of the background, the video remains undeniable.””
He pointed toward the screen.
“Mrs. Mitchell struck another person.””
The judge nodded.
“That is true.””
My hope faded.
“However,” the judge continued, “the court must determine whether this incident reflects a pattern or an isolated event.””
Then she looked at me.
“Mrs. Mitchell, do you have any history of violence?””
“No.””
“Any police reports?””
“No.””
“Any concerns from teachers, doctors, or counselors?””
I hesitated.
The counselor.
The therapist.
The person who had betrayed me.
Mr. Hayes noticed my hesitation.
Before I could answer, the courtroom doors opened.
A woman stood there.
Everyone turned.
I recognized her immediately.
Lily’s school counselor.
She looked nervous.
The judge frowned.
“Who are you?””
The woman stepped forward.
“My name is Rachel Evans.””
She held a folder.
“I have information regarding Lily Mitchell’s welfare.””
Brandon stood.
“What kind of information?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
Then at the judge.
“The kind that proves the child has been manipulated.””
Patricia’s face went white.
Because she knew.
Rachel opened the folder.
“And I believe the court needs to see what Lily wrote yesterday.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she write?”” I whispered.
Rachel looked at the judge.
“She wrote that she was afraid her grandmother would find out she told the truth.””
The courtroom went silent.
Then Rachel said the words that changed everything.
“She also wrote that her father already knew.””
I turned toward Brandon.
He looked away.
And in that moment, I realized.
He wasn’t just protecting his mother.
May you like
He had known something.
And he had hidden it from me.
