Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried
The courthouse steps became completely silent.
Even the people who had been recording stopped talking.
Brandon stared at the signature like the paper itself had betrayed him.
“Lily’s therapist?”” he repeated.
His voice sounded different.
Smaller.
“What does she have to do with this?””
I looked down at the documents again.
For months, I had felt like something was wrong.
Lily had started coming home quiet.
She stopped asking me about weekend plans.
She stopped drawing pictures of our family.
And every time I asked what happened, she would look toward the hallway before answering.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
I thought it was the divorce.
I thought she was scared.
I never imagined someone was putting those fears inside her.
Patricia crossed her arms.
“This proves nothing.””
Mr. Hayes looked at her.
“Actually, it proves quite a lot.””
He pulled out another document.
“The therapist provided confidential notes that were later altered and used in a custody petition.””
Brandon looked at his mother.
“You knew about this?””
Patricia avoided his eyes.
“Your son needed help.””
“No,” Brandon said.
“You wanted custody.””
The accusation shocked even him.
Because for the first time, he was admitting the truth out loud.
Patricia’s expression hardened.
“You’re being emotional.””
“Emotional?”” Brandon snapped.
“You used my daughter.””
The irony almost made me smile.
The man who had threatened to take Lily away from me was finally realizing someone had manipulated him too.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive him.
Not even close.
Mr. Hayes handed me another folder.
“There’s more.””
I opened it.
Inside were emails.
Messages.
Financial records.
Patricia had been paying a private investigator to collect information about me.
Pictures of me leaving work.
Pictures of me meeting friends.
Even pictures of me sitting alone at a coffee shop.
My stomach turned.
“She was spying on me.””
Brandon looked uncomfortable.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at him.
“You never knew anything, Brandon.””
He flinched.
Because it was true.
He never knew how many nights I cried quietly in the bathroom.
He never knew how many times I defended him to people who warned me.
He never knew how lonely I felt sitting across from him at dinner while he stared at his phone.
But he knew enough to hurt me.
“Mom,” Brandon said slowly, “tell me you didn’t do this.””
Patricia stayed silent.
That silence destroyed whatever excuse remained.
Brandon took a step back.
“You did.””
She lifted her chin.
“I did what I had to do.””
“For what?””
“For your family.””
I laughed softly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“This was never about family.””
Patricia stared.
“It was about control.””
Her face tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“I spent twelve years watching you control every person around you.””
I stepped closer.
“You controlled Brandon.””
She looked away.
“You controlled my marriage.””
I held up the documents.
“And you tried to control my daughter.””
For once, Patricia had nothing to say.
Then my phone rang.
The sound cut through the tension.
I looked at the screen.
It was Lily’s school.
My heart dropped.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Mrs. Mitchell, this is the school counselor. I’m sorry to call you like this, but there’s been an incident.””
My body went cold.
“What happened?””
There was a pause.
Then:
“Lily asked to speak with you privately.””
I looked at Brandon.
He was watching me carefully.
“What did she say?””
The counselor hesitated.
“She said she needs to tell you the truth before someone stops her.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What truth?””
Another pause.
Then the counselor lowered her voice.
“Mrs. Mitchell… Lily said her grandmother told her that if she ever chose you, she would lose her father forever.””
The world seemed to stop.
Brandon heard enough.
His face changed.
“Mom?””
Patricia looked away.
“No.””
It was the first time she sounded afraid.
Brandon stepped toward her.
“What did you tell my daughter?””
“I was protecting her.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were using her.””
Patricia’s eyes moved toward me.
And in that moment, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not because of the divorce.
Not because of the company.
Because she knew her secret was finally coming out.
Mr. Hayes closed his briefcase.
“Mrs. Mitchell, we should leave immediately.””
I nodded.
But before I walked away, Brandon spoke.
“Wait.””
I stopped.
He looked broken.
Not innocent.
Not forgiven.
Just broken.
“Are you really taking everything from me?””
I turned around.
“No, Brandon.””
I looked at the courthouse behind him.
“The law is.””
Then I walked toward the waiting car.
But as I opened the door, Mr. Hayes received a phone call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
“Mrs. Mitchell.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at the phone.
“The judge just received a new emergency filing.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
Mr. Hayes hesitated.
Then answered:
“Your husband.””
I stared at him.
“But the divorce was finalized.””
He looked at the courthouse doors.
“That’s not the filing.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Then what is it?””
Mr. Hayes lowered his voice.
“Your ex-husband is requesting immediate emergency custody.””

And attached to the request was one piece of evidence.
A video of me slapping Patricia.
