Chapter 12: The Last Person I Trusted
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t ask questions.
I just moved.
Because the picture showed my daughter.
And every second mattered.
“Emma, wait!””
Mr. Hayes followed.
Brandon was behind us.
I didn’t care who came.
I didn’t care who I trusted.
I only cared about Lily.
The drive felt endless.
Every red light felt like an enemy.
Every second on the clock felt like a threat.
When we reached the house, the front door was open.
My stomach dropped.
“Lily!””
I ran inside.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
The same house where I had packed my belongings after deciding I couldn’t stay anymore.
The same rooms where I once believed my family was safe.
“Lily!””
Then I heard something.
A voice.
“Mom?””
I turned.
She was standing at the top of the stairs.
Alive.
Safe.
I almost collapsed.
I ran to her.
She wrapped her arms around me.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I held her tighter.
“Never apologize for needing me.””
Behind me, Brandon entered.
His face changed when he saw her.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
Not with fear.
With sadness.
That hurt him more.
“I’m sorry too, Dad.””
Brandon stopped.
“For what?””
“For believing Grandma.””
He closed his eyes.
Then he knelt.
“I’m the one who should be sorry.””
For a moment, it was quiet.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
“Beautiful.””
Everyone turned.
Rachel stood there.
Calm.
Smiling.
Like she had walked into a normal family gathering.
My blood turned cold.
“How did you get in?””
She looked around.
“I used to counsel your daughter.””
“You manipulated her.””
Rachel tilted her head.
“I helped her understand reality.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“You taught her to fear me.””
Rachel smiled.
“Fear is useful.””
Brandon stared at her.
“You were working with my mother.””
Rachel laughed softly.
“Your mother was just a tool.””
The room went silent.
Patricia.
A tool.
That was when I understood.
Patricia had never been the mastermind.
She was only the loudest person in the room.
“Who are you working for?”” Mr. Hayes asked.
Rachel looked at him.
“You already know.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she smiled.
“Ethan.””
Brandon’s face hardened.
“Why?””
Rachel walked slowly into the room.
“Because your company was never supposed to belong to you.””
My hands tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“Your father built Mitchell Innovations.””
I froze.
“My father?””
Brandon looked confused.
Rachel continued.
“Before he died, he created a trust.””
Mr. Hayes’ expression changed.
“A hidden trust?””
Rachel nodded.
“And Emma was the beneficiary.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“What?””
Rachel smiled.
“Your father knew Brandon was not capable of protecting what he built.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“My father never told me.””
“Because he was waiting for the right time.””
Brandon looked furious.
“And Ethan?””
Rachel’s smile faded.
“Ethan found the trust.””
Mr. Hayes looked at the documents again.
“That’s why he wanted control.””
Rachel nodded.
“He believed if Emma disappeared from the company, the trust would become accessible.””
I looked at Lily.
Then back at Rachel.
“You used my daughter to get to me.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty shocked me.
She didn’t even pretend anymore.
“You knew exactly what would hurt me.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“And it worked.””
I felt anger replace fear.
“You’re wrong.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“Am I?””
I looked at Lily.
Then at Brandon.
Then at Mr. Hayes.
For years, people had decided my story.
They told me who I was.
Weak.
Emotional.
Unstable.
But they were wrong.
Because every time they tried to break me…
I learned.
I adapted.
I survived.
I pulled out my phone.
Rachel frowned.
“What are you doing?””
I smiled.
“Making sure you say everything again.””
Her face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
Because she finally noticed.
The recording icon.
Was already running.
Mr. Hayes stepped forward.
“You just admitted to manipulating a child and interfering with custody proceedings.””
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“You think this ends here?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“It ends when everyone who thought they could control me learns one thing.””
She stared.
“What?””
I looked at Lily.
Then back at her.
“You should have never underestimated the woman you were trying to destroy.””
Rachel’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked down.
The name on the screen appeared.
Ethan Caldwell.
She answered.
But before she could speak, a voice came through the speaker.
A voice we all heard.
“Rachel?””
Her face went pale.
Because Ethan didn’t sound like a partner.
He sounded afraid.
“Where are you?””
Rachel whispered:
“At Emma’s house.””
A pause.
Then Ethan said:
“Leave immediately.””
Everyone froze.
Rachel frowned.
“Why?””
The answer came softly.
“Because the police are already on their way.””
Rachel looked toward the window.
Sirens echoed in the distance.
May you like
Then Ethan said the words that changed everything.
“Rachel… they found the body.””
