Chapter 14: The Truth My Father Left Behind

The envelope arrived the next morning.

Not by mail.

Not by courier.

It was delivered to the police station by someone who refused to give their name.

Inside was a single flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

*Emma, if you are watching this, everything has already happened. I’m sorry.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

I didn’t know why.

Maybe because I hated that even after everything, Ethan still had a way of making me curious.

Mr. Hayes connected the flash drive to his computer.

Brandon stood behind us.

Lily was at school.

Safe.

That was the only reason I could focus.

The video began.

Ethan appeared on the screen.

He looked different.

Not like the confident businessman who had called me.

Not like the man who believed he controlled everything.

He looked tired.

“I know you hate me.””

His eyes looked directly into the camera.

“You should.””

I almost stopped watching.

But Mr. Hayes continued.

Ethan took a breath.

“I didn’t start this because I wanted your company.””

Brandon laughed bitterly.

“Then what did you want?””

The video continued.

“I wanted revenge.””

The room became silent.

Ethan looked away.

“Twenty years ago, my father worked for your grandfather.””

Brandon frowned.

“What?””

“He was blamed for financial crimes he didn’t commit.””

Mr. Hayes looked shocked.

“My father investigated that.””

Ethan nodded on the screen.

“Your family destroyed his reputation.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t anyone know this?””

Because that was the pattern.

Secrets.

Hidden decisions.

People hurting others without ever explaining why.

Ethan continued.

“I spent my entire life believing the Mitchell family took everything from us.””

He looked down.

“Then I found the truth.””

The video changed.

Documents appeared.

Old company records.

Emails.

Financial statements.

My eyes widened.

“My father?””

Ethan’s voice continued.

“Your father discovered the fraud.””

Brandon stepped closer.

“What?””

“He knew my father was innocent.””

The room went still.

“He was trying to expose the real criminals.””

Mr. Hayes whispered:

“Victor.””

Ethan nodded.

“Victor Lane.””

The name felt heavier now.

“He was the one who stole the money.””

I covered my mouth.

“The man who protected the trust…”

“Was the same man who created the problem.””

The video continued.

“Your father found out. He planned to remove Victor and expose him.””

Brandon stared.

“But he died before he could.””

Ethan nodded.

“That’s when Victor hid the evidence.””

I looked at the screen.

“So why hurt me?””

Ethan answered as if he heard me.

“Because I blamed the wrong people.””

The honesty made it worse.

“I saw Emma as the daughter of the man who ruined my family.””

He looked down.

“But then I investigated her.””

The video showed photos.

Me.

Working.

Taking care of Lily.

Helping employees.

Standing alone after my divorce.

And I realized something.

Ethan had been watching me for months.

“I saw the truth.””

His voice softened.

“Emma wasn’t the enemy.””

Nobody spoke.

“Patricia and Brandon were easier targets because they were already destroying themselves.””

Brandon looked away.

“And you?””

Ethan sighed.

“I got too close to revenge.””

The video ended with one final message.

“I found Victor’s evidence. I found proof of the original fraud. But Victor discovered I had it.””

A pause.

Then:

“He came after me.””

The screen went black.

Mr. Hayes immediately opened another file.

Inside was a recorded conversation.

Victor’s voice.

Threatening Ethan.

Then another voice.

Patricia.

My stomach turned.

She wasn’t just a manipulator.

She had known.

She had been involved from the beginning.

Brandon sat down.

“My whole life…”

He covered his face.

“My whole life was built on lies.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I didn’t see my enemy.

I saw someone who had finally discovered the prison he lived in.

Then my phone rang.

The police.

I answered.

“Mrs. Mitchell?””

“Yes?””

“We need you to come to the station.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found Ethan Caldwell.””

My heart stopped.

“Is he alive?””

Silence.

Then the officer said:

“Yes.””

I exhaled.

“But there’s a problem.””

“What problem?””

“He requested to speak only with you.””

I looked at Mr. Hayes.

“Why?””

The officer hesitated.

“Because he claims he has the final piece of evidence.””

“What evidence?””

May you like

The answer chilled me.

“The evidence that proves who ordered Victor Lane’s death.””
