The Woman They Tried to Break / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Secret Beneath the Company

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound inside the house was the distant approach of sirens.

Rachel stood frozen with the phone pressed against her ear.

The confidence she had carried into the room was gone.

“What body?”” she whispered.

Nobody answered.

Not Ethan.

Not us.

The call ended.

Rachel slowly lowered the phone.

Mr. Hayes looked at her.

“What happened?””

She didn’t respond.

That was when I knew.

Whatever Ethan was afraid of was bigger than money.

Bigger than custody.

Bigger than the company.

The front door opened.

Police officers entered.

“Rachel Evans?””

She looked toward the entrance.

The woman who had manipulated my daughter.

The woman who had helped destroy my family.

The woman who believed she was untouchable.

She finally looked small.

“I’m not going anywhere.””

The officer stepped forward.

“We need you to come with us and answer some questions.””

Rachel looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

“You think you won.””

I held Lily’s hand.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I know I survived.””

The officers escorted her outside.

But the questions remained.

Especially one.

Who was dead?

And why did Ethan sound terrified?

An hour later, we were back at Mr. Hayes’ office.

Lily sat on the couch beside me, drawing quietly.

I kept watching her.

Not because I didn’t trust her.

Because after everything, I needed to remind myself she was safe.

Mr. Hayes placed a folder on the desk.

“The police found a body connected to the company.””

Brandon sat across from us.

His face was pale.

“Who?””

Mr. Hayes looked at him.

“Victor Lane.””

Brandon froze.

“My father’s old financial advisor?””

I looked at him.

“You knew him?””

“Yes.””

His voice became quieter.

“He worked with my father for twenty years.””

Mr. Hayes nodded.

“Victor was the person who created the trust documents after your father’s death.””

My heart tightened.

“Then why would someone hurt him?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Mr. Hayes said:

“Because he knew where the original documents were.””

I stared.

“The original trust papers?””

“Yes.””

Brandon leaned forward.

“Wait.””

His face changed.

“What documents?””

Mr. Hayes opened the folder.

“Your father didn’t just leave Emma shares.””

He pulled out a document.

“He left her full voting control under certain conditions.””

I looked at the paper.

My name was there.

My father’s signature.

A decision he had made before I even understood what power meant.

“Why didn’t I know?””

Mr. Hayes looked at me.

“Because Victor hid the documents.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed someone inside the company would try to steal them.””

Brandon looked at the floor.

“Ethan.””

Mr. Hayes nodded.

“Ethan discovered the trust existed.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“So everything…”

“Yes.””

“The divorce?””

“Yes.””

“The custody battle?””

“Yes.””

“The investigation?””

“Yes.””

Mr. Hayes looked at me.

“All connected.””

I looked at Brandon.

For years, I thought my marriage fell apart because of betrayal.

But the truth was worse.

My marriage had become a battlefield for something much larger.

Then Brandon spoke.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He took a deep breath.

“Ethan wasn’t just my business partner.””

I waited.

“He was my father’s favorite employee.””

Mr. Hayes looked surprised.

“What?””

Brandon nodded.

“My father trusted him more than anyone.””

“Then why would he betray him?””

Brandon gave a bitter laugh.

“Because my father never saw what people wanted from him.””

He looked at me.

“Neither did I.””

Silence filled the room.

Then Lily looked up.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Are we still a family?””

The question broke something inside me.

Because children always ask the hardest questions.

I sat beside her.

“We’re your family.””

She looked at Brandon.

Then me.

“Even if people leave?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

She nodded slowly.

Then her eyes moved to the television in the corner.

A breaking news report was playing.

A reporter stood outside Mitchell Innovations headquarters.

“Authorities have launched an investigation after allegations of financial fraud, corporate manipulation, and possible criminal activity involving company executives.””

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Ethan Caldwell.

My stomach dropped.

The reporter continued:

“Sources say investigators are searching for Ethan Caldwell, who has not been located.””

Brandon stood.

“He ran.””

Mr. Hayes looked at the screen.

“No.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“Look closer.””

The camera showed Ethan’s office.

On the desk was a single envelope.

A message written across it.

*For Emma Mitchell.*

My heart stopped.

Because everyone in the room knew.

Ethan wasn’t running.

May you like

He wanted me to find something.

And whatever was inside that envelope was the reason he had destroyed everything.
