Chapter 9: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

The words destroyed the room.

Not the gunshots.

Not Vincent outside.

Those words.

*She hid you from me.*

I stared at Isabella.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

That was worse than an answer.

Rico noticed too.

“Isabella.””

Her eyes closed.

“I never wanted this.””

“Wanted what?””

She looked at me.

“The truth.””

The hidden room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Leo was still in Dante’s arms, watching all of us with frightened eyes.

I stepped back.

“My mother trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re telling me she was afraid of you?””

Isabella’s face broke.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at the necklace in my hand.

“Because the secret wasn’t that you were Michael’s daughter.””

I frowned.

“Then what was it?””

She hesitated.

“The secret was that you were my daughter too.””

Nobody spoke.

I thought I misunderstood.

I actually laughed.

A small, broken sound.

“No.””

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

“No, that’s not possible.””

“My mother raised me.””

“Yes.””

“Her name was Evelyn.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Isabella looked at Rico.

And the pain on his face told me he already knew.

“You were born before I met Rico.””

My heart pounded.

“I don’t understand.””

“My first husband was Michael Vance.””

The world stopped.

The photographs on the wall suddenly made sense.

The smiles.

The friendship.

The secrets.

“You married my father?””

Isabella nodded.

“I was nineteen.””

I stared at her.

“And my mother?””

“She was my closest friend.””

I felt dizzy.

“My whole life was a lie.””

“No.””

Isabella stepped forward.

“Your life was protected.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

I looked at Rico.

“My mother.””

I looked at Isabella.

“You.””

“Everyone made choices for me.””

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

For the first time, I wasn’t angry because people lied.

I was angry because everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Vincent.

The door was weakening.

Dante checked his weapon.

“We need to leave.””

Rico nodded.

But he didn’t move.

He looked at Isabella.

“I need to know.””

She looked at him.

“Know what?””

“Did you fake your death?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt him.

“Why?””

“Because Vincent knew I found the ledger.””

Rico’s expression changed.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I thought if Vincent believed I was gone, he would stop.””

“And did he?””

“No.””

The door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came through.

“Family meetings are always so emotional.””

Everyone froze.

Vincent.

He was right outside.

“Clara.””

My blood turned cold hearing my name from him.

“You have no idea how long I’ve waited to meet you.””

Rico moved closer to the door.

“If you touch her—”

Vincent laughed.

“There he is.””

A pause.

“The hero.””

Rico’s jaw tightened.

“You killed Michael.””

Silence.

Then Vincent answered.

“Yes.””

The room went still.

No denial.

No excuse.

Just the truth.

“I was young.””

Rico stared at the door.

“You murdered him.””

“I protected the family.””

“You murdered him.””

Vincent’s voice hardened.

“And now you’re protecting his daughter.””

I looked at Rico.

His face was filled with rage.

But something else too.

Regret.

Vincent continued.

“You want to know the funniest part, Ricardo?””

Nobody answered.

“Your father knew.””

Rico froze.

“Knew what?””

“That Michael had a daughter.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

Vincent laughed.

“He knew Clara existed.””

I looked at Isabella.

She looked horrified.

“No.””

Vincent continued.

“He knew the child was a threat.””

Rico stepped toward the door.

“Shut up.””

“He didn’t want the girl found.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Ask Isabella.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked down.

And that was enough.

My stomach dropped.

“Isabella?””

Her voice was barely there.

“Your grandfather wanted you gone.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“But Michael refused.””

Vincent’s voice came again.

“And that refusal is why he died.””

The door finally cracked.

Wood splintered.

Rico pushed everyone back.

Dante prepared to fire.

Then Vincent spoke one final sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

“Clara…”

The door broke open halfway.

“You’re not the last surviving piece of Michael Vance.””

I stared into the darkness beyond the door.

Vincent smiled.

“There’s another child.””

May you like

The world went silent.

“Your brother is alive.””
