Chapter 12: The Man Who Came Back From The Grave
Nobody moved.
The television continued playing.
The reporter continued speaking.
But I heard nothing.
Because one sentence repeated in my mind.
*The man who died with your father.*
Except he didn’t.
He was alive.
Anthony Vance.
Another name from my past.
Another ghost who had returned.
I turned toward Rico.
“You knew him?””
Rico nodded slowly.
“Anthony was Michael’s brother.””
I closed my eyes.
Another brother.
Another secret.
“How many people in my family were hiding from me?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had a good answer.
Mikey watched me carefully.
“Are you angry?””
I looked at him.
The question broke my heart.
Because he was just a child.
A child who had spent his life carrying secrets adults created.
“Yes.””
He lowered his head.
“But not at you.””
His shoulders relaxed.
I sat beside him.
“Never at you.””
He nodded.
Then quietly asked:
“Are you really my sister?””
I looked at him.
At the boy who had been hidden from me.
The boy who carried pieces of a family I thought was gone.
“Yes.””
The word came out before I could think.
“Yes, I am.””
For the first time, he smiled.
A small smile.
But real.
Then Rico’s phone rang.
He stepped away to answer.
I watched his face change.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you sure?””
He looked at me.
That scared me.
“What?””
He ended the call.
“Someone broke into your apartment.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“They were looking for something.””
I looked at the necklace.
“The ledger.””
Rico nodded.
“They didn’t find it.””
I felt relief for half a second.
Then I realized something.
“How do you know?””
He didn’t answer.
“Rico.””
His expression darkened.
“Because they left a message.””
The room became silent.
“What message?””
He looked at me.
“They want you to come home.””
“No.””
Rico shook his head.
“Clara.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“I’m done being moved around like a chess piece.””
He looked surprised.
Good.
Because I meant it.
“For fifteen years, everyone made decisions about my life.””
I looked at Isabella.
“My mother.””
I looked at Rico.
“You.””
I looked at Mikey.
“Everyone.””
I stood.
“Not anymore.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Isabella walked toward me.
“You’re right.””
I looked at her.
She nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
She hesitated.
“What?””
“The whole truth.””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“I can.””
“Then start.””
She took a deep breath.
“Your father didn’t hide the ledger.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He hid something else.””
“What?””
She looked at the necklace.
“Something more valuable.””
I waited.
“The ledger was only proof.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Proof of what?””
Isabella whispered:
“That Vincent wasn’t working alone.””
The room went cold.
Rico looked at her.
“You said he was.””
“I was wrong.””
“Who else?””
Isabella looked at the television.
At Vincent’s face.
Then back at us.
“The person who helped him destroy your family.””
A knock interrupted us.
Everyone froze.
A hospital security guard stood outside.
“Mr. Moretti?””
Rico stepped forward.
“Yes?””
The guard held out an envelope.
“This was delivered for Clara Vance.””
My name.
Again.
My hands shook as I took it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A recent photograph.
Taken today.
Of me.
Standing outside the hospital.
Watching me.
And written underneath:
*You found your brother.*
I turned the picture over.
Three more words.
*Now find mine.*
I looked up.
Rico’s face had gone pale.
“What?””
He stared at the message.
Then whispered:
“Vincent has a son.””
The room fell silent.
And then Mikey said something that made every person turn toward him.
A memory he had kept hidden.
A name he had never spoken.
“I know who it is.””
Everyone looked at the boy.
Mikey’s hands started shaking.
“He’s the reason Mom was afraid.””
He looked at me.
“He’s the reason she told me never to trust anyone with the Moretti name.””
A pause.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Because Vincent’s son is already inside your family.””
