Chapter 15: The Last Secret of the Silver Star

The house where I grew up had always felt ordinary.

A small kitchen.

A tiny backyard.

A hallway where my mother marked my height on the wall every birthday.

I remembered the smell of her cooking.

The sound of her singing.

The way she held my hand when storms scared me.

I never knew the ground beneath that house carried a secret.

A secret people had killed for.

We returned after midnight.

The neighborhood looked exactly the same.

That somehow made it worse.

The world had not changed.

Only I had.

Rico stood beside me at the front gate.

“You don’t have to go inside.””

I looked at him.

“I spent my whole life wondering why my mother was afraid.””

I held the silver star.

“I’m done wondering.””

He nodded.

For once, he didn’t argue.

Inside, everything was untouched.

My mother’s old furniture.

The faded curtains.

The photographs.

Mikey walked beside me quietly.

“This was my home too.””

I looked at him.

He smiled sadly.

“Mom brought me here once.””

I stopped.

“She did?””

He nodded.

“She said I needed to see where my sister grew up.””

My eyes burned.

“She knew we would meet.””

“Yes.””

We entered my old bedroom.

The place where I slept as a child.

The place where I dreamed about answers.

Mikey opened the notebook.

“There.””

A small mark on the map.

Under the floor.

Rico and Dante moved the old wooden boards.

After several minutes, they found something.

A metal box.

Hidden beneath the foundation.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

A flash drive.

And one photograph.

The photograph showed my father.

But he wasn’t alone.

Beside him stood Ricardo’s father.

And Vincent.

Three men.

Before everything fell apart.

The letter was from my father.

I read it aloud.

“Clara.””

My voice broke.

“If you are reading this, then the truth survived.””

I continued.

“I need you to know something important.””

I turned the page.

“Vincent was never the beginning.””

Everyone went still.

“He was only a weapon.””

Rico looked at me.

The letter continued.

“The person who created this war is someone nobody would suspect.””

My fingers tightened.

“Someone who believed they owned every person around them.””

I looked at the photograph.

Three men.

One was dead.

One was missing.

One had spent his life hiding.

The letter continued.

“Ricardo is innocent of my death.””

Rico looked up.

“What?””

I kept reading.

“He was a son trapped inside his father’s shadow.””

Rico looked away.

Then came the final lines.

“But Clara, there is one thing you must know.””

I swallowed.

“The person who ordered my death is still alive.””

The room became silent.

The flash drive sat beside the letter.

Dante picked it up.

“We should see what’s on this.””

Rico nodded.

We connected it.

A video appeared.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

“Clara.””

I froze hearing his voice again.

“If you are watching this, I’m sorry.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.””

A tear slipped down my face.

“I’m sorry I trusted the wrong person.””

He paused.

Then said:

“The person who destroyed our family is…”

The screen suddenly glitched.

Static.

Then a different voice interrupted.

A voice I recognized.

Everyone did.

Because it belonged to someone standing behind us.

“You really should have left the past buried.””

We turned.

The front door stood open.

A man was standing there.

Older.

Calm.

Holding a gun.

Rico immediately moved.

“Father?””

Nobody spoke.

Because the man in the doorway was impossible.

The man who had died years ago.

The man whose funeral Ricardo attended.

The man whose empire started everything.

Antonio Moretti.

Alive.

He smiled.

“Hello, son.””

Rico stared in disbelief.

“You’re dead.””

Antonio looked at me.

Then at the necklace.

“No.””

His smile widened.

“I was hiding.””

I stepped back.

The final piece clicked into place.

The man who started the war.

The man everyone thought was gone.

The man my father tried to expose.

Antonio Moretti.

He looked at me.

And said the words that ended fifteen years of lies.

“Clara Vance…”

He raised the gun slightly.

“You look exactly like your mother.””

A silence followed.

Then Rico stepped in front of me.

“Over my dead body.””

Antonio smiled.

“That’s exactly what Michael said.””

The room froze.

Because before anyone could move, Antonio pressed a button on the small device in his hand.

The doors locked.

The lights went out.

May you like

And from the darkness came one final message.

“Now you’ll learn why your father really died.””
