Chapter 14: The Truth Ricardo Never Knew

I wanted to believe Nico was lying.

I needed him to be.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Ricardo Moretti had saved me.

He had protected Leo.

He had risked everything to uncover the truth.

But secrets had a way of changing people.

And I had learned one thing.

Everyone had a hidden side.

Even the ones who looked like heroes.

“Nico,” Rico said quietly.

The room changed when he spoke.

Not with fear.

With disappointment.

“What are you talking about?””

Nico looked at him.

“You really don’t know.””

Rico’s face hardened.

“Explain.””

Nico smiled.

“That’s always been your problem, Ricardo.””

He looked around the room.

“You think because you didn’t know something, it didn’t happen.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both men looked at me.

“I’m done with people giving me half-truths.””

I pointed at Nico.

“You.””

Then Rico.

“And you.””

My voice shook.

“I want everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Nico nodded.

“Fine.””

He reached into his coat.

Dante immediately raised his weapon.

Nico stopped.

“Relax.””

He pulled out a small recorder.

“I came here because I wanted you to hear this.””

He placed it on the table.

A voice filled the room.

An old recording.

My father.

Michael Vance.

My entire body froze.

“If you’re hearing this, Clara, then I failed.””

I covered my mouth.

His voice.

I had never heard it before.

But somehow, I knew.

A father’s voice.

“I need you to understand something.””

Static.

“I loved your mother.””

A pause.

“But I also loved Isabella.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Isabella.

She looked devastated.

My father continued.

“Evelyn and Isabella were the only people who knew the truth.””

Truth.

That word again.

“I discovered what Vincent was doing.””

A pause.

“But I also discovered something about Ricardo.””

Rico closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“Ricardo was young. He believed his father was a good man.””

I listened carefully.

“He didn’t know what was happening.””

Relief touched me.

Then disappeared.

“But ignorance does not erase consequences.””

The recording stopped.

Nico looked at Rico.

“Your father ordered Michael’s death.””

Rico stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

For the first time, I saw him break.

“My father would never.””

Nico laughed softly.

“You still defend him.””

Rico looked at the recorder.

Then at Isabella.

“Did you know?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“Isabella.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Michael asked me not to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew you would destroy yourself trying to fix it.””

Rico stepped back.

I watched the pain move across his face.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

His whole life had been built around a family he thought he understood.

And now every foundation had collapsed.

Nico looked at me.

“But there’s something else.””

I stared.

“What?””

He looked at the necklace.

“The ledger was never hidden inside it.””

I frowned.

“Then where?””

Nico pointed at the silver star.

“Your mother hid the location.””

I touched it.

“Where?””

Nico smiled.

“She hid it inside the person nobody would suspect.””

A terrible feeling formed in my chest.

“Who?””

Nico looked at Mikey.

Everyone turned.

The boy looked confused.

“What?””

Nico said quietly:

“Your brother.””

I froze.

Mikey looked terrified.

“No.””

Nico stepped closer.

“Your mother gave you the key.””

He looked at me.

“She gave him the map.””

I looked at Mikey.

The boy who had been carrying secrets.

The boy who had lost everything.

“What did she leave you?””

Mikey slowly reached into his backpack.

His hands trembled.

He pulled out a small notebook.

“I don’t know.””

He handed it to me.

The cover was worn.

Old.

Familiar.

Because I had seen it before.

My mother’s handwriting.

I opened it.

The first page had one sentence.

*Clara, if you found this, it means everyone I trusted failed.*

My heart stopped.

The next line was worse.

*Including me.*

I turned the page.

And found a drawing.

A map.

To a place I knew.

A place connected to my childhood.

My old house.

Then, beneath it, one final message.

*The truth was buried where you first learned to walk.*

I looked up.

Rico was staring at the map.

“What?””

He whispered:

“That house…”

I turned.

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“Your childhood home.””

May you like

I waited.

“Was built on Moretti land.””
