Chapter 11: The Boy Who Remembered Everything

The hospital room was too bright.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The white walls.

The clean sheets.

The quiet beeping of machines.

It felt wrong that such a normal place could hold the biggest truth of my life.

I stood outside the room for almost a minute before entering.

Rico stood beside me.

“You don’t have to do this alone.””

I looked at him.

“You say that like I know how to do it with someone.””

He didn’t answer.

Because he understood.

I opened the door.

The boy inside looked nothing like what I imagined.

I don’t know what I expected.

Maybe someone who looked like me.

Maybe someone who carried pieces of my father’s face.

Instead, I saw a scared child sitting beneath a blanket, holding a stuffed bear.

He looked up.

And immediately froze.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he recognized something.

“You’re real.””

My throat tightened.

“Hi.””

The boy stared at me.

Then looked at the necklace around my neck.

“That’s Mom’s.””

I sat down slowly.

“Yes.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“She said you would have it.””

I couldn’t speak.

“What’s your name?””

He hesitated.

“Michael.””

I smiled sadly.

“Michael.””

He nodded.

“Everyone calls me Mikey.””

The nickname hurt.

Because it sounded familiar.

Like something my father might have said.

“Who raised you?””

The boy looked down.

“Mom.””

“Isabella?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

A nurse entered the room.

“Sorry, visitors need to leave soon.””

Rico stepped forward.

“I’ll handle it.””

The nurse recognized him immediately.

Her expression changed.

“Mr. Moretti.””

She left without another word.

Mikey watched.

“Are you dangerous?””

The question surprised me.

Rico looked at him.

“Why would you ask that?””

Mikey shrugged.

“Mom said dangerous people are usually the ones who don’t look dangerous.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that sounded exactly like something my mother would say.

I looked at him.

“Who was your mom?””

Mikey’s fingers tightened around the bear.

“Evelyn.””

My entire body went cold.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She took care of me.””

I couldn’t understand.

“My mother died fifteen years ago.””

“No.””

Mikey shook his head.

“She died two years ago.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“No.””

“She told me about you.””

My hands started shaking.

“What?””

“She said you were her daughter.””

I looked at Rico.

He looked equally confused.

Mikey continued.

“She said she had to disappear.””

“Disappear?””

He nodded.

“She said bad people were looking for us.””

I moved closer.

“What bad people?””

The boy looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Vincent.””

My heart sank.

“But how do you know him?””

Mikey looked at me.

“Because he came to our house.””

“When?””

“Before Mom died.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did he do?””

Mikey’s eyes filled with fear.

“He asked where the necklace was.””

Everyone became still.

“The necklace?””

He nodded.

“He said it belonged to him.””

I touched the silver star.

“Why?””

Mikey looked away.

“Because it had the truth.””

I swallowed.

“What truth?””

The boy was quiet for a long time.

Then he said:

“Dad recorded everything before he died.””

Rico stepped forward.

“Everything about what?””

Mikey looked at him.

“About Vincent.””

The room changed.

Because this was no longer just about my family.

It was about bringing down someone who had spent years hiding behind power.

Mikey reached under his pillow.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“My mom told me to give this to Clara.””

I took it.

My name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Written.

By my mother.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father.

My mother.

Isabella.

And a baby.

Me.

On the back was a message.

*The truth is not in the necklace.*

I frowned.

Then I read the next line.

*The necklace is only the beginning.*

I turned the photo over.

A second piece of paper was attached.

One sentence.

*Find the man who was supposed to die with Michael Vance.*

I looked at Rico.

“Who was supposed to die with my father?””

Nobody answered.

Then the hospital television suddenly changed channels.

A breaking news alert appeared.

A photograph filled the screen.

A man.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

The reporter’s voice echoed through the room.

“Authorities have confirmed the identity of the man discovered at the abandoned Moretti estate.””

I stared.

Because I knew that face.

The entire city knew that face.

The man on the screen was Vincent Moretti.

The reporter continued:

“After fifteen years missing, former Moretti associate Anthony Vance has returned.””

My blood froze.

Anthony.

Another Vance.

Another secret.

Rico whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

May you like

His face turned pale.

“Because Anthony Vance was the man who died with your father.””
