Chapter 5: The Evidence With My Name on It
I read the email twice.
The message supposedly came from my private business account and offered Marcus Bell access to Carter House's expansion plans in exchange for a substantial payment.
The amount was $250,000.
Beneath the offer sat a digital signature carrying my full name.
Ethan Carter.
For a moment, the restaurant seemed to tilt around me.
Richard watched my face.
“Have you ever communicated with Marcus about selling company information?””
“No.””
“Have you ever authorized a payment to him?””
“Absolutely not.””
He nodded.
“Then we need to determine how he obtained these records.””
I returned to the table, where Daniel and Vanessa were still arguing.
“Everyone needs to stop discussing this until we know what we're dealing with,” I said.
“Richard has received a complaint accusing me of selling confidential information.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
I placed the printed email Richard had sent to my phone on the table.
Daniel read it.
His expression shifted from disbelief to alarm.
“This says you offered Marcus our competitors' information.””
“It says someone using my name offered him information.””
Vanessa leaned over the paper.
“That's terrible, Ethan.””
I looked at her.
She recoiled slightly.
“What? It is terrible.””
“Three minutes ago, you were asking me to help your husband secure an investment. Now there's evidence suggesting someone has been framing me. You'll forgive me if I don't find your sympathy particularly reassuring.””
Her eyes flashed.
“I didn't write that email!””
“I didn't say you did.””
“But you're looking at me like you think I did.””
“I'm looking at everyone here as a potential witness. That's all.””
Richard took out his phone again.
“I'll have our compliance department preserve the original files. Ethan, you should contact your attorney and your technology director immediately.””
I nodded and called James Whitaker, our chief technology officer.
James answered on the second ring.
“Ethan? Is everything okay?””
“No. I need you to check the security logs for my executive email account. I want every login, every forwarded message, and every authorization created in the past sixty days preserved.””
There was a pause.
“Are we dealing with a breach?””
“Possibly. Someone has submitted an email supposedly written by me offering confidential information to Marcus Bell.””
James stopped breathing for a moment.
“That's serious. Don't access the account from your phone again until we secure it. I'll freeze external forwarding rules and begin an audit.””
“Also check the payment authorization system. There's a transfer document with my signature attached.””
“I'll handle it. Ethan, one more thing. Did you receive any unusual login notifications recently?””
I thought back.
“Two weeks ago, I received an alert about a sign-in attempt from an unfamiliar device. It was marked unsuccessful.””
“Did you report it?””
“Yes. We changed my password.””
“Then I'll investigate whether the alert was connected.””
When the call ended, Richard had moved to a nearby table with his legal counsel on speakerphone.
Daniel sat motionless, staring at the documents.
Vanessa kept twisting her wedding ring.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Did Marcus tell you Ethan was involved?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Did he tell you someone at Carter House was helping him?””
“No.””
“Then why would he suddenly accuse Ethan?””
“I don't know!””
Daniel looked at the ceiling.
“Everything was fine until you started meeting with him.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You're acting as though I planned this entire thing.””
“Did you?””
“No!””
“Then tell me why he has your emails, my documents, and now Ethan's signature.””
She started crying again.
“I don't know!””
I believed she might not know the entire plan. But the more she spoke, the clearer it became that she'd ignored warning signs whenever they threatened to interfere with what she wanted.
Before I could ask another question, Olivia approached carrying a small tablet.
“Ethan, there's something you need to see.””
She showed me a reservation record from three months earlier.
A private dining room had been booked under the name M. Bell. The reservation was for two guests, and the contact number matched the one in the security report.
“What time was this?”” I asked.
“Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. The guest requested a secluded table and asked whether we could disable the room's exterior camera.””
“Did we?””
“No. We told him our cameras couldn't be disabled for private bookings.””
“Who handled the reservation?””
“Lena, one of our former hosts. She left the company six weeks ago.””
I studied the record.
“Did she say anything about the guests?””
Olivia hesitated.
“She told me the man had asked her to print several documents. She refused because our staff aren't permitted to print personal business files for customers.””
“Do you still have those documents?””
“No. But she may remember what happened.””
“Can you contact her and ask whether she's willing to speak with our attorney?””
Olivia nodded and stepped away.
Vanessa watched the exchange.
“You've been investigating me for three months?””
“No,” I said.
“We've been preserving information related to suspicious activity at our restaurant. Your name appeared in that information. That doesn't make you guilty of anything.””
She lowered her voice.
“Marcus said you were dangerous.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He said you had connections everywhere and that you'd ruin anyone who tried to interfere with your business.””
“Did he tell you that before or after you started helping him?””
She didn't answer.
Richard returned with his attorney still on the phone.
“Ethan, our team has reviewed the metadata attached to the complaint. The email was created using an account that resembles yours, but it was sent through an external server.””
“So someone spoofed my address?””
“Possibly. The bank authorization is more concerning. It contains details that aren't publicly available.””
Daniel looked up.
“Could someone have accessed Ethan's business systems?””
“Yes,” Richard replied.
“That's one possibility. Another is that the documents were fabricated using stolen templates.””
I rubbed my forehead.
Carter House had grown quickly, but our financial systems were protected by multiple approval requirements. A quarter-million-dollar transfer couldn't be completed with a single signature.
If someone had stolen a template, they might still have obtained internal information.
If they'd accessed our systems, the consequences could be far worse.
My phone vibrated.
James had sent a message.
*I found an unusual administrator login. It originated from a device previously authorized for a former employee's account. Calling you now.*
I answered immediately.
“James?””
“Ethan, the login came through an administrator account that should have been disabled when the employee left.””
“Whose account?””
“Your former executive assistant, Rebecca Shaw.””
My stomach tightened.
Rebecca had left Carter House four months earlier to care for her sick father. She'd been trustworthy, efficient, and deeply involved in the company's expansion.
I had personally written her recommendation letter.
“Are you certain?””
“I'm checking the records now. The account was used to access your payment templates and several confidential expansion files.””
“Can you identify the device?””
“I'm trying. But there's another issue.””
“What?””
James lowered his voice.
“The login occurred after Rebecca's employment ended. Someone has been using her credentials for weeks.””
I looked across the table at Vanessa.
She was staring at her phone.
Then it rang.
The name on the screen was Marcus Bell.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Answer it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don't.””
“Put it on speaker.””
“I can't!””
Daniel reached for the phone, but she snatched it away.
The call ended.
A message appeared immediately afterward.
Vanessa read it and began trembling.
I watched her eyes move across the screen.
“What did he say?”” I asked.
She looked at me, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“He says if I tell you who gave him access to the system, he'll release everything he has on Daniel.””
Daniel stood slowly.
“Who gave him access, Vanessa?””
She opened her mouth.
Then the restaurant's front doors swung open, and a woman rushed inside carrying a leather folder.
I recognized her instantly.
Rebecca Shaw.
My former executive assistant walked straight toward our table, looked at the documents in Richard's hands, and whispered the words that changed everything.
“Ethan, you need to know that Marcus didn't steal your information.””
May you like
She swallowed hard.
“He was paid to obtain it.””
