Chapter 13: The Man Who Called Himself My Father

At 8:17 the next morning, Detective Laura Bennett called to tell me that Richard Hale had disappeared.

His apartment had been found unlocked. His medication sat beside an untouched cup of coffee, and his car remained parked outside.

The only thing missing was a small leather briefcase containing his personal documents.

“He was supposed to meet our investigators at nine,” Detective Bennett explained.

“His attorney says he left home shortly after midnight.””

“Did anyone see him leave?””

“A neighbor saw a black SUV outside the building. We haven't established whether it was connected to his departure.””

I stared at the photograph on my phone.

The elderly man standing outside the medical clinic had my eyes, my nose, and the same slight crease between his eyebrows that appeared whenever I concentrated.

“Detective, I received a message last night telling me to meet him alone.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You should have told me immediately.””

“I forwarded it to you.””

“You forwarded the photograph and the threat. You didn't tell me whether you intended to follow it.””

I glanced toward the restaurant's windows.

“I didn't.””

“Good. Don't change that decision. We're treating his disappearance as potentially connected to the investigation.””

When the call ended, I drove to Carter House.

The dining room was empty, but the kitchen was already alive with the clatter of pans and the smell of fresh bread. Marcus, our head chef, stood at the pass checking a delivery.

He looked up when I entered.

“Morning, boss. You look like you haven't slept.””

“I haven't.””

“Coffee?””

“Please.””

He poured me a cup without asking questions.

That small gesture nearly brought me to tears.

For weeks, I'd been surrounded by people who wanted information, money, leverage, or forgiveness. Marcus simply noticed that I was tired and offered coffee.

I carried it into my office.

Richard Lawson was waiting beside the desk, speaking with his attorney. Rebecca sat near the window, organizing the records she'd recovered from the old administrator account.

“Any word from Samuel?”” I asked.

Rebecca shook her head.

“Detective Bennett is trying to reach him.””

Richard Lawson ended his call.

“Ethan, we have an update from the forensic team. The documents Andrew brought are authentic copies of the original ledger. Several transfers went through companies connected to Victor Hale.””

“Can we prove Victor controlled them?””

“Not yet. But we have enough to request additional banking records.””

“And the property deed?””

“The examiner believes your father's signature was forged. Your mother's signature appears genuine, but that doesn't establish that she understood the document's purpose.””

I sat down.

“So she might have signed it believing she was protecting me.””

“That's possible.””

I thought about her handwritten note.

Ethan must never learn who his father really was.

For years, I'd interpreted her silence as a mother's attempt to spare her child a painful truth. Now I understood that she'd been trapped between people who knew how to turn love into leverage.

My phone rang.

Detective Bennett.

“We've located Samuel Whitmore,” she said.

“He's safe. He contacted our office through an attorney and agreed to provide a statement.””

“Does he have the recording from my mother?””

“Yes. He's arranging a secure transfer.””

“Did he tell you anything about Richard Hale?””

“He confirmed that Hale was planning to contact you. He also provided information about the person who sent you the messages.””

I leaned forward.

“Who?””

“We're not ready to disclose that. But we believe the messages were sent from a device associated with Victor Hale's business network.””

Richard Lawson exchanged a glance with Rebecca.

“Detective, if Victor is monitoring my communications, he may also be trying to interfere with the investigation into Halcyon.””

“We're aware of that possibility. Our financial crimes team is coordinating with your compliance department.””

After the call, Rebecca opened her laptop.

“Ethan, there's something I found in the archived email logs. A message from Victor Hale to your old executive account, dated two days before Andrew disappeared.””

She turned the screen toward me.

The message was short.

The agreement must be completed before Thomas changes his mind. Margaret has been informed. Do not involve the boy.

I read it twice.

“What agreement?””

Rebecca clicked the attached file.

The document was corrupted, but the filename remained visible.

*HALE FAMILY SETTLEMENT — FINAL BENEFICIARY SCHEDULE*

My pulse quickened.

“Can you recover it?””

“I'm working on it.””

Richard Lawson pulled a chair beside her.

“Make a forensic copy before attempting any repairs. We can't risk altering the original.””

Rebecca nodded.

A few minutes later, her screen displayed a new notification.

She opened it.

Then she went completely still.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

“The file isn't just a settlement agreement.””

“What is it?””

“It's a list of beneficiaries.””

She turned the laptop toward me.

The first names belonged to companies I recognized from the old financial records. The next entries listed individuals connected to the original property partnership.

At the bottom was a name that made my stomach tighten.

*Ethan James Carter — controlling beneficiary, Carter Family Trust.*

Beneath it was a percentage.

One hundred percent.

I stared at the screen.

“What's the trust worth?””

Rebecca checked the attached valuation schedule.

“Based on the last recorded assessment, the assets were worth approximately twenty-eight million dollars when the trust was established.””

Richard Lawson let out a slow breath.

“Ethan, if this document is legitimate, your mother may have been protecting an inheritance that someone else wanted to control.””

Before I could respond, Rebecca opened another attachment.

It contained a scanned signature page.

The trustee's name was Victor Hale.

But the beneficiary authorization was signed by a different person.

Thomas Carter.

My father had apparently created a trust in my name before his death.

And someone had spent years making sure I never knew it existed.

Then Rebecca noticed a final entry in the document history.

A recent amendment had been submitted six weeks earlier.

The beneficiary had not changed.

The trustee had.

The new trustee was listed as Richard Hale.

My biological father had been appointed to control the trust shortly before he vanished.

And according to the final line of the amendment, the entire trust would become irrevocable upon my thirty-fifth birthday.

I checked the date.

My birthday was less than three weeks away.

Richard Lawson looked at me.

“Now we understand why someone is rushing to keep you away from him.””

Before I could answer, Detective Bennett called again.

“We've recovered the recording from your mother,” she said.

“Mr. Carter, you need to hear this with your attorney present.””

“Why?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Because your mother named the person who ordered the original property transfer.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“And who was it?””

May you like

There was a pause.

“Your biological father, Richard Hale.””
