Chapter 4: The Message That Destroyed Her Marriage

For several seconds, nobody at table twelve moved.

Daniel stared at his phone, his thumb hovering over the message Marcus Bell had sent him.

Then he turned the screen toward Vanessa.

“Tell me this is a lie.””

Vanessa looked at the message, and the color drained from her face.

“I can explain.””

Daniel let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“You've said that three times tonight. Every time, something worse comes out.””

“Daniel, please. Not here.””

“Not here?”” He gestured toward the restaurant around them.

“You humiliated me in front of our friends, and now I'm discovering that my own wife might have helped someone steal my company's confidential information. Where exactly would you prefer to discuss it?””

Claire quietly moved her chair away from the table.

Gregory stopped pretending to look at his phone.

Richard Lawson remained standing beside me, his expression cold and controlled.

“Daniel,” Richard said, “before this goes any further, I suggest you preserve that message. Don't delete it, forward it, or attempt to contact the sender until your legal counsel advises you.””

Daniel nodded without looking up.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“Sweetheart, listen to me.””

He pulled away.

“Don't call me that.””

Her hand fell to her side.

I had watched people negotiate million-dollar contracts with less tension than the silence that followed.

Olivia approached with a fresh glass of water, but Vanessa waved it away.

“I don't want anything.””

“Of course,” Olivia replied, setting the glass on an empty section of the table.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Ethan, you need to understand something. Marcus approached me first. He said Daniel's company was about to lose the Halcyon deal because someone had been spreading rumors about his finances.””

Richard frowned.

“Who told you that?””

“Marcus.””

“And you believed him?””

“He showed me documents.””

“What documents?”” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa looked down.

“Financial projections. Internal emails. Things I thought were already available to investors.””

Daniel's voice grew quieter.

“You thought confidential emails were publicly available?””

“I didn't know they were confidential!””

“Then why did you hide the meetings from me?””

She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

I watched Daniel's expression change. His anger was giving way to something more painful: the realization that he might have trusted the wrong person with the most important parts of his life.

Richard pulled a chair away from the table.

“Mrs. Reed, did you send Marcus any documents belonging to your husband's company?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. I only told him where he could find certain information.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Where?””

She whispered something I couldn't hear.

“Say it again,” he demanded.

“I told him about the shared office server.””

Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall behind him.

“You gave him access to our server?””

“I didn't give him a password!””

“You told him where to look!””

“He said he only wanted to verify information!””

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

“That server contains client contracts, private financial records, and acquisition plans. You knew that!””

“I was trying to save your deal!””

“By putting my entire company at risk?””

Vanessa began crying.

Her tears looked real. But so had her earlier laughter, and I had learned that genuine emotion didn't automatically mean genuine remorse.

Richard took out his phone.

“I'm contacting our legal team. Halcyon will suspend all access to the materials involved until the investigation is complete.””

Daniel sank back into his chair.

“Richard, please. I didn't authorize any of this. I swear to you.””

“I believe you may not have known about it,” Richard replied.

“But we have to establish what happened before making any decisions.””

Then he looked at me.

“Ethan, I need to ask you something privately.””

We walked several steps toward the windows overlooking Peachtree Street.

“Have you ever seen Marcus Bell at this restaurant before?”” he asked.

“Not personally.””

“Your manager said she had a reason to notify you if Vanessa returned. Why?””

I glanced toward Olivia, who was speaking quietly with our security supervisor near the service station.

“Three months ago, a former employee reported that someone had been asking questions about our reservation system and private dining arrangements. Olivia recognized Vanessa from a photograph that employee provided.””

Richard studied me.

“You suspected she was involved in something?””

“I suspected someone was using my business to arrange meetings they didn't want noticed. I didn't know what those meetings involved.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

“Because I didn't have evidence of wrongdoing. I instructed Olivia to preserve any information that might become relevant. I wasn't going to accuse someone based on a rumor.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“That was sensible.””

Across the room, Vanessa was speaking urgently to Daniel.

I couldn't hear every word, but I caught one sentence.

“Marcus promised he would never let this reach you.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Why would he need to promise that?””

Vanessa froze.

Richard heard it too.

He turned toward the table.

“Mrs. Reed, who exactly was Marcus planning to protect you from?””

She stared at him.

Then her eyes moved toward me.

“Ethan, you have to help me.””

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“Marcus told me someone at Halcyon was going to expose Daniel's company. He said if I helped him get the documents, he could make sure Daniel never lost the contract.””

“Why would stealing your husband's information protect him?”” I asked.

“I didn't understand everything.””

“Then tell us what you did understand.””

She pressed both hands against her temples.

“He said there was another bidder. Someone who wanted Daniel to fail. He told me that if we acted first, we could negotiate from a stronger position.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Who was the other bidder?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't know his real name.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You were helping a man you barely knew interfere with my business, and you didn't even know who he worked for?””

“He said he was connected to the investors!””

Richard's phone vibrated again.

He read the notification, then looked at me with an expression that made my stomach tighten.

“Ethan, we have another problem.””

“What is it?””

“Marcus Bell has just submitted a formal complaint to Halcyon, claiming that someone from Carter House offered to sell him confidential information about your restaurant group.””

I stared at him.

“That is completely false.””

“I believe you. But he attached supporting documents.””

Richard turned the screen toward me.

The first page showed an email with my name in the sender field.

The second showed a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

And the third contained a bank transfer authorization bearing the Carter House corporate seal.

Someone hadn't merely stolen Daniel's information.

May you like

Someone had built a case against me.

And judging by the timestamp on the email, the plan had started weeks before Vanessa ever walked through my restaurant doors.
