Chapter 3: The Photograph in Olivia's Hand
Richard Lawson didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
When a man who controlled millions of dollars in investment money asked for a private conversation, people tended to stop talking.
Daniel stood beside his chair, his fingers gripping its polished wooden back.
“Richard,” he said carefully, “I'm sure we can clear up any discrepancies. My team has been working around the clock on that proposal.””
Richard regarded him calmly.
“Then I'm sure you'll have no difficulty answering a few questions.””
Vanessa stepped between them with a smile that looked painful to maintain.
“Of course. Daniel's company is extremely thorough. He's worked so hard for this opportunity.””
Richard glanced at her.
“I wasn't questioning his work ethic.””
The smile disappeared.
I gestured toward the private dining room.
“Richard, let's discuss the details somewhere quieter.””
“Agreed.””
Before we could leave, Olivia approached me from the service corridor. She carried a small folded envelope and looked more serious than I'd ever seen her.
“Ethan, may I speak with you for a moment?””
“Of course.””
She handed me the envelope.
“You asked me to notify you if Vanessa Reed returned to the restaurant.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“What?””
I looked at Olivia.
“Thank you.””
Daniel turned toward his wife.
“Why would Ethan ask someone to notify him if you came here?””
Vanessa's lips parted, but no answer came.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph taken three months earlier at a restaurant in Buckhead. Vanessa sat in a leather booth beside a dark-haired man in a charcoal jacket. Their heads were close together, and her hand rested on his wrist.
At first, I didn't understand why the photograph mattered.
Then I noticed the folder lying open between them.
The cover bore the logo of Reed Urban Partners.
Inside was a document marked Confidential Acquisition Strategy.
I studied the man's face.
I recognized him.
His name was Marcus Bell, a former consultant who'd worked briefly with one of Richard's investment partners. He'd been dismissed after confidential client information disappeared from a project he'd handled.
The investigation had never established exactly where the stolen information went.
Until now.
Richard looked over my shoulder.
His expression changed immediately.
“Where did you get that?””
“Olivia received it from a former employee who recognized Vanessa.””
Olivia nodded.
“The employee was dining here that night. She saw Mrs. Reed and Mr.
Bell reviewing documents. She thought it was suspicious because she'd heard about the missing files.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“This is insane. You're showing me a random photograph and acting like I've committed a crime.””
“I'm not accusing you of anything,” I said.
“I'm trying to understand why you were reviewing confidential business documents with a man connected to a previous information leak.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Vanessa, who is Marcus Bell?””
She folded her arms.
“An acquaintance.””
“An acquaintance?””
“Yes, Daniel. People know other people. It's not a crime.””
Richard took the photograph from me and studied it closely.
“That man was involved in a serious confidentiality investigation. The missing information included client contacts, pricing models, and proposed acquisition targets.””
Daniel went pale.
“Those are the exact materials included in our Halcyon proposal.””
Richard nodded.
“Which is why this concerns me.””
Vanessa shook her head furiously.
“You're making a connection that doesn't exist!””
“Then explain the document,” Richard said.
“I don't have to explain anything.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Vanessa, answer him.””
She turned on her husband.
“Don't you dare interrogate me in front of these people.””
“I'm asking you a simple question!””
“And I'm telling you that I know Marcus socially.””
“Why were you sitting with him in a restaurant with my confidential proposal on the table?””
The dining room had grown quieter around us. Several guests were watching openly now, though Olivia discreetly asked a nearby server to give the table some privacy.
Vanessa's face reddened.
“I was helping him with a business idea.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Using your husband's confidential documents?””
“I never said that!””
“You don't need to,” Daniel replied.
“I'm looking at the photograph.””
He reached for the envelope, but I moved it out of reach.
“Daniel, this is evidence that needs to be handled carefully. I'm not going to let anyone destroy it or turn this into a shouting match.””
Vanessa stared at me.
“You think you're some kind of hero now? You get to humiliate me because you own a restaurant?””
“No,” I said.
“I think we should establish the truth before anyone makes another accusation.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You've wanted revenge on me since high school. I know how people like you operate. You remember every insult and wait for the perfect moment to get even.””
For a moment, I was seventeen again, standing in front of my classmates while Vanessa laughed at my dream.
But I wasn't that boy anymore.
“Vanessa, I didn't arrange this photograph. I didn't ask you to bring confidential documents to a restaurant. And I didn't make you speak to me the way you did tonight.””
Her jaw tightened.
“You could have told me you owned the place.””
“And would you have treated me differently?””
She didn't answer.
I let the silence speak for itself.
Richard placed the photograph on the table.
“Daniel, I need to know whether your company authorized Marcus Bell to access this proposal.””
“No,” Daniel said immediately.
“He has never been employed by us. He has never been authorized to access our files.””
Richard turned toward Vanessa.
“Then how did he obtain them?””
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
“I don't know.””
Daniel looked at her with an expression that was rapidly turning into disbelief.
“Three months ago, you told me you were meeting an old friend for lunch. You said she needed advice about a charity event.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I did meet a friend.””
“Was Marcus there?””
She looked away.
“Daniel—”
“Was he there?””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“And you never told me?””
“It wasn't important.””
Richard closed his folder.
“Until we understand how these documents were obtained, Halcyon will suspend its review of your proposal.””
Daniel looked as if he'd been struck.
“You can't do that. We've invested months in this deal.””
“We have a responsibility to protect our investors and our clients. If confidential information was compromised, we need to know how.””
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“What have you done?””
She slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Claire gasped. Gregory stood halfway out of his chair, then sat down again.
Vanessa stared at her husband, breathing hard.
“Don't you dare blame me for your business problems!””
Daniel slowly touched his cheek.
“I didn't blame you. I asked you a question.””
“You've always treated me like I'm stupid!””
“Because you refuse to answer anything!””
Olivia stepped forward.
“Everyone, please. We need to keep the dining room calm.””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“I'm leaving.””
Daniel didn't move.
“Not until you tell me the truth.””
She glared at him.
“You want the truth? Fine. Marcus said he could help us secure the investment. He knew people at Halcyon, and he told me he had information that would make Daniel's proposal impossible to refuse.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“What information?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He said there were weaknesses in the competing bids. He promised to give us an advantage.””
“Did you provide him with your husband's documents?”” I asked.
“No!””
Her answer came too quickly.
Richard leaned forward.
“Mrs. Reed, this is serious. If your husband’s confidential materials were shared without authorization, the consequences could extend well beyond this meeting.””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the entrance.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“I was trying to help you.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“By giving a stranger my company's information?””
“I didn't know what he was going to do with it!””
Richard turned to me.
“Ethan, I need to see everything connected to this photograph. If Marcus Bell is involved, we may finally understand what happened to the missing client list.””
I nodded.
“Olivia, preserve the original envelope and contact our security team. Nobody should handle the photograph further.””
“Understood,” she said.
Vanessa suddenly stepped toward me.
“Ethan, please. You know me. You know I wouldn't deliberately hurt Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Tonight, you tried to make me feel small because you thought I had nothing. Now you're asking me to believe you acted out of love because you think I have something you need.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You're being cruel.””
“No. I'm asking questions.””
Daniel sank into his chair, staring at the photograph as though it had become a window into a marriage he no longer recognized.
Then Richard's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and answered.
“Richard Lawson.””
A man's voice came through loudly enough for those nearby to hear.
“Mr. Lawson, we've just identified the person in the photograph. We also recovered an email linking him to the original client-list theft.””
Richard straightened.
“Who sent the email?””
There was a pause.
Then the voice answered.
“Someone using an account registered to Vanessa Reed.””
Daniel went completely still.
Vanessa's lips parted.
“That isn't possible.””
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
“Mrs. Reed, I think it's time you told us everything.””
But before she could respond, Daniel reached into his jacket, pulled out his own phone, and stared at a message that had just appeared.
He read it once.
Then again.
His face turned ashen.
“Vanessa,” he whispered, “why did Marcus just text me that you're the one who paid him to steal my client list?””
May you like
Vanessa stared at the screen.
And this time, she had no excuse ready.
