Chapter 9: The Admiral’s Hidden Promise

Nobody moved.

The message remained frozen on the screen.

THE ADMIRAL KNOWS.

Three words.

Enough to change everything.

The officers in the room looked at their commander.

The admiral looked at the screen.

Then he slowly sat down.

That was the moment I knew.

He wasn’t surprised.

He was remembering.

“Sir?”” one officer asked.

The admiral didn’t answer immediately.

He removed his glasses.

For the first time, he looked less like a commander.

More like an old man carrying a burden.

“I knew your father.””

I stared at him.

“You knew him?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

The answer made my anger rise.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice shook.

“Everyone keeps using my father’s wishes as an excuse to lie to me.””

The admiral accepted the criticism.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t argue.

He simply admitted it.

“I made a promise to your father.””

“What promise?””

“To keep you away from the people who killed him.””

Silence.

The words hit harder than expected.

“Who killed him?””

The admiral looked toward Daniel.

Then Frank.

Then the closed door.

“Michael Voss.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“We thought he disappeared.””

“He did.””

The admiral looked at the security footage.

“But apparently he’s been waiting.””

I looked at the screen.

“Why tonight?””

Nobody answered.

Then Frank spoke.

“Because I brought the file.””

Everyone turned.

The admiral looked at him.

“You?””

Frank nodded.

“I found the documents months ago.””

My chest tightened.

“And you never told me.””

“I was trying to find out who was involved.””

“You could have trusted me.””

Frank looked at me.

“I know.””

The pain in his voice was real.

But trust wasn’t rebuilt by regret.

It was rebuilt by truth.

The admiral looked at Frank.

“What else did you find?””

Frank hesitated.

Then reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a second envelope.

“This.””

He placed it on the table.

The admiral recognized the handwriting immediately.

“That’s your father’s.””

Frank nodded.

“He left it hidden with my father’s belongings.””

I stared.

“My father trusted your father enough to leave evidence?””

The admiral looked troubled.

“Your father trusted very few people.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What is it?””

The admiral folded the paper.

“Your father identified the person who betrayed Phoenix.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“Who?””

The admiral looked at me.

“I don’t think you’re ready.””

I almost smiled.

“Admiral, my mother-in-law tried to have me arrested tonight. My husband hid a dead man’s letter from me. A man I loved returned after twenty-two years. Someone broke into classified files.””

I held his gaze.

“I think I’m ready.””

The admiral handed me the paper.

I read the name.

And my entire body went cold.

Because it wasn’t Michael Voss.

It wasn’t Frank’s father.

It wasn’t anyone I expected.

It was someone I had known my entire adult life.

Someone who had been present during every major moment.

Someone who had earned my trust.

The name at the bottom of the page was:

Admiral Thomas Reed.

I looked up slowly.

The man standing in front of me.

The man who had honored me.

The man who had protected my father’s secret.

Was the man my father suspected.

Nobody spoke.

Then the security alarm sounded again.

A different alarm.

More urgent.

An officer rushed into the room.

“Admiral.””

Everyone turned.

The officer looked terrified.

“We found Michael Voss.””

The admiral stood.

“Where?””

The officer swallowed.

“He’s not outside.””

A pause.

“He’s inside the building.””

The room froze.

Then the officer added:

“And he’s requesting to speak with Captain Whitmore.””

I looked at Daniel.

I looked at Frank.

May you like

Then I looked at the admiral.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure who I was supposed to fear anymore.
