Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Daniel looked at me.

The man who had returned from the dead.

The man who brought me answers.

The man I once loved.

And for the first time, I wondered if he had brought me the truth…

or guided me toward the truth he wanted me to see.

“You knew.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel shook his head.

“Not everything.””

“But something.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

Frank closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another person who claimed protection.

I laughed quietly.

“I should have known.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Evelyn, please.””

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Not another explanation.””

He stopped.

“I need the truth.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

So much older than the man I remembered.

“I found out Phoenix continued after I disappeared.””

“How?””

“Because I was recruited to investigate it.””

My eyes narrowed.

“By who?””

He hesitated.

“The Navy.””

The admiral’s words echoed in my head.

Phoenix changed.

Not ended.

I stared at him.

“You were part of it.””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I was trying to destroy it.””

“While working inside it?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

His silence returned.

That silence hurt.

Daniel looked at Frank.

Then at me.

“I thought if I came back into your life, they would come after you.””

I shook my head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That you keep making choices for me.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Everyone had done it.

My father.

Frank.

Daniel.

Even the admiral.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

Daniel whispered:

“I was trying to save you.””

“And I was trying to live.””

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“Finally.””

We turned.

Admiral Reed stood at the entrance.

Everyone reached for weapons.

He raised his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.””

I stared at him.

“You ran.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew what would happen if I stayed.””

I stepped closer.

“You were the person my father suspected.””

Reed looked down.

“Yes.””

The admission stunned everyone.

The admiral continued.

“But your father was wrong about one thing.””

“What?””

“He thought I was the enemy.””

He looked at Daniel.

“He was.””

Daniel froze.

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Evelyn—”

Reed continued.

“Daniel Cross was never sent to destroy Phoenix.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“Stop.””

“He was sent to preserve it.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked at me.

“Evelyn, listen.””

But I couldn’t.

Because every piece was falling into place.

The timing.

The secrets.

The disappearances.

“You came back because of me.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Because I was part of Phoenix.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Not because you missed me.””

His silence answered.

I stepped away.

The man I loved had returned after twenty-two years.

But maybe he had returned for the wrong reason.

Reed looked at me.

“Your father discovered the truth before he died.””

“What truth?””

“That Phoenix needed someone who couldn’t be controlled.””

I looked at the photograph.

Me as a child.

“He chose me.””

“No.””

Reed shook his head.

“Your father protected you from being chosen.””

He looked at Daniel.

“But Daniel didn’t.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“I tried to stop it.””

“Too late.””

The room erupted.

Officers moved toward Daniel.

But I stopped them.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at me.

Because despite everything…

I still needed the full truth.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I knew what you could become.””

I stared.

“That’s not an answer.””

He whispered:

“Because Phoenix believed you were the only person who could rebuild what they lost.””

My blood ran cold.

“Rebuild?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And they were right.””

Before I could respond, every screen in the archive turned on.

A video appeared.

A recording.

A woman sitting in darkness.

A woman I had never seen before.

But her voice made everyone freeze.

“Captain Evelyn Whitmore.””

The woman looked directly at the camera.

“Welcome back.””

Daniel stepped away.

“No.””

The woman smiled.

“Your training begins now.””

I stared at the screen.

“I was never trained.””

The woman’s smile widened.

“You don’t remember.””

The video changed.

A series of images appeared.

Me as a child.

Medical records.

Evaluations.

Phoenix files.

And one final document.

PROJECT EVE.

The woman spoke again.

“You weren’t chosen because you were talented.””

The screen showed my father.

“You were chosen because your father created you to defeat us.””

The video ended.

Leaving one final message.

May you like

PHOENIX WAS NEVER ABOUT CONTROL.

IT WAS ABOUT SUCCESSION.
