Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath the Truth
The room exploded into motion.
Officers surrounded Michael.
“Stay back!””
“Call medical!””
I stood frozen.
Not because of the gunshot.
Because of who was missing.
The recording.
Gone.
The truth had disappeared again.
The admiral looked around.
“Lock down the building!””
Security officers rushed out.
Frank grabbed my arm.
“Evelyn, are you okay?””
I pulled away.
“Where is Reed?””
Frank looked confused.
“What?””
“The admiral.””
We all turned.
He was gone.
Nobody had noticed him leave.
That terrified me.
The man we trusted to protect the truth had disappeared the moment the truth was exposed.
Daniel knelt beside Michael.
“Where were you hit?””
Michael opened his eyes slightly.
“Not important.””
Daniel looked angry.
“You always say that.””
Michael gave a weak smile.
“You always worry too much.””
I stared.
“You two…”
Daniel looked at me.
“We worked together.””
I nodded slowly.
“Of course you did.””
Every answer created another question.
Michael reached into his jacket.
My eyes widened.
“Don’t move.””
He ignored me.
He pulled out a small memory card.
“I made a copy.””
Everyone froze.
The officer beside him looked shocked.
“You had a backup?””
Michael smiled faintly.
“I survived twenty-two years because I stopped trusting only one place to store the truth.””
He handed it to me.
I stared at the tiny card.
“So the recording is safe?””
Michael nodded.
“Part of it.””
“Part?””
His expression became serious.
“The recording only reveals who was involved.””
“What does it not reveal?””
Michael looked toward the door where Reed had disappeared.
“Who was controlling them.””
The words sent a chill through me.
Someone above Reed.
Above Phoenix.
Above everyone we knew.
The admiral had not been the end of the story.
He was only another piece.
Security finally returned.
“Captain, we found something.””
An officer handed me a tablet.
“Before disappearing, Admiral Reed accessed one final file.””
“What file?””
The officer hesitated.
Then showed me the screen.
A classified document.
My name was at the top.
CAPTAIN EVELYN WHITMORE.
I scrolled.
The first line made my heart stop.
PROJECT PHOENIX: FINAL SUBJECT.
I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He took the tablet from me.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Frank stepped closer.
“What does it mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
And the fear in his eyes was worse than anything I had seen all night.
“Evelyn…”
“What?””
He swallowed.
“You were never just someone who discovered Phoenix.””
The room went silent.
“You were part of it.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“I was afraid this would happen.””
My hands started shaking.
“My father never told me.””
Daniel whispered:
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Michael looked at me.
“But this time, it’s true.””
I stared at the document.
The years.
The secrets.
The lies.
Everything I thought I knew about my own life began collapsing.
Then another file appeared on the tablet.
A photograph.
A photograph of me.
Not tonight.
Not recently.
A photograph taken when I was a child.
Standing beside my father.
And beside him…
Was Admiral Reed.
Holding a folder marked:
PHOENIX.
At the bottom of the image was a handwritten note.
May you like
The final message from my father.
“She must never know what she was chosen for.””
